That's actually very economical & sensible thing to do. Even simple verbatim discs are so good in quality, that normal people don't need M disc. M disc is for data preservation by companies or agencies who have deep pockets to maintain those blu ray drives still after 50 years..

Thanks man I am also planning on using m-disc as my primary source of archival and wanted to make sure it works. Your video did help in making that decision. Some tips for videos: 1. Your content is original, which is nice 2. This could have been a 10min video if you did some editing to remove the not so relevant part. All in all, great content. Keep it up :)

have always used DVDs as backup I have hundreds but now with Blurays it is easier it is expensive but on a separate note I still have some DVDs and CDs from 2003, 2005 if you take care of them in a dry place without dust they are quite efficient every time my father Remember a trip, I just search the backups and print them on a photo printer

I have had a few that no longer write, and just one disc that completely failed (the top layer, where the data is written just under the label, flaked off completely). I've never had major issues with old verbatim and imation discs, just the store own brand ones you find in stores

Good evening, I bought the same burner as yours but I can't burn a UHD bluray, and it's NERO but you have to pay to burn and what's more, there's no movie playback.

Thank you for this video 🙏 I found a similar writer online and I have to make sure it’s the BDXL version and M-Disc compatible. Want to archive for 1000 years as well 😁 So, 1 set of copies off site to make sure. Also 1 set in a bank vault perhaps

@@grandmachines by that time, blu ray writer will be long obsolete and finding new one will be a challenge, and definitely pricier too than original retail price. I recommend to just buy external hard drives, and change it every 5 years or so. More capacity and cheap.

Nice video, I was looking at this player and wondered how long it would take. It seems to be based on a pioneer writer from around 2013 judging by the model and other comments found online. I'm not sure if it's easy to make region free, and it would seem that alot of drives can only rip uhd discs from pioneer writers with unofficial firmware, although that's not necessary for many. I recommend you also use writing software that also automatically verifies a disc straight after writing, to ensure the data is correct bit for bit. Some drives can have issues writing to larger discs, since any over 25gb have more than one layer. Compressing folders that contain lots of small files, into one large file, may quicken the burning process in some cases, even if it doesn't save any more storage space. The drive doesn't need to keep seeking for individual files, potentially leading to less errors. The only drawback is that with a bad disc, individual files may no longer or be harder to be retrieved, since everything on disc is made up of fewer, larger compressed files, usually rar, zip or 7z files. So that is optional and probably better used for lots of small files to write to disc which are not useful on their own, ie not photos or videos, although it may still be worth trying if you get errors trying to write lots of small files of any kind to disc. Of course, you should always backup important data to more than one disc or storage device anyway..

I heard the M-disc BD-R is not much different from a regular HTL (inorganic) BD-R in terms of archivability, and that's the main reason stopping me from getting it. Can anyone please enlighten me on the matter?
@chronocommander007
@chronocommander007 2 жыл бұрын
M-Disc should be the longest lasting, followed by discs using MABL (metal ablative recording technology - Verbatim makes them), followed by HT L (inorganic dyes). The worst would be discs using LTH (organic dyes susceptible to degrdarion). TH

@@chronocommander007 Thanks for the information, based on your explanation, can I take it that the archivability of M-Disc really isn't that much better than MABL?
@chronocommander007
@chronocommander007 2 жыл бұрын
@@mischievousalien8873 Under adverse conditions M-Disc may well hold up much better. However, I suspect that M-Discs may have been discontinued. Prices have been increasing over the past few years. I suggest you get single layer discs. While they are limited to 50 GB your chances of successful burns are higher and compatibility with DVD drives is better than with dual layer discs.

@@chronocommander007 Still in production via indefinite licence to Verbatim, but yes Millenniata went under a decade ago, just not produced as much as standard BDXL but they are still in fabrication as the standard was pushed to almost all BD/BDXL readers and burners from 2011 onwards.

One thing to note is the plastics they are very well molded to a very tight spec as well as they are the only ISO standard meeting optical archive disks besides Sonys archival disk system witch is 200USD per 5.5TB but 8k per reader.

If you like to be a good KZbinr I think that you need to 'PREPARE' before hand on how you will going to start to record your video. Holding the camera with one hand and the BD Burner with the other looks very unprepared to me, plus your laptop wasn't connected to power? Maybe you can place your new video camera on a STAND and you will have your two hands free and the video will record and play with NO interruptions. Only a sugestion. Good luck.
