No worthwhile artist tries to produce generic work (ie work that fits a particular genre), but that does not mean that the work will not be adopted by people who consume a particular genre anyway. Swans fans have a reputation (more before the indie-rock hipsters adopted them around the time The Seer was released) for being 30- to 50-year-old fat goth chicks who practice Wicca. Meanwhile Bauhaus was one of the codifying bands for gothic rock/deathrock, along with acts like Siouxsie and the Banshees and Joy Division, and from that we can also conclude that Peter Murphy wasn't trying to make "gothic rock" music. Yet only a fool, an absolute knave, would say that either Bauhaus or Swans don't fit in the gothic milieu. However, ignoring the cultural influence and history of the bands completely, there are two key things that make them similar to each other but different from most other music: Dark and especially death-centric themes (where the staggering majority of all lyrical songs are love songs with muddy themes at worst), and the thing KZbin's algorithm cares about, which is that a great many fans of the one are also fans of the other, so it recommends listeners of one to listen to the other. That crossover fanbase is the "gothic milieu" btw.
