Taiwan is pretty much like Japan when it comes to rules. Taiwanese follow rules down to the dot and are meticulous about small details. In this sense it's quite different society than China. However once the rules are followed, the government doesn't really intrude into other aspects of your life. You are free to do whatever you feel like as long as it doesn't infringe on other people's rights / freedom.

You said: "Taiwan is pretty much like Japan regarding rules ... follow the rules down to the dot" !!! LOL, what nonsense !!! Both Taiwan and Japan put fake history into textbooks teaching their youths. DPP 民進黨 and followers are just a bunch of liars.

As a Taiwanese American, I have never set foot in China and have no desire to do so in future. The Chinese talk about Taiwanese owing them our loyalty. But it was the Chinese themselves that sold out their own country to the Manchus in the 1600s (the ancestors of the Taiwanese were the Han loyalists to Ming dynasty who sought political freedom on the island. That's why Taiwanese is closer to archaic Han Chinese than Mandarin). It was the Chinese that gave Taiwan up to Japan in 1895 because they were too incompetent to resist Japanese invasion and deemed the island not important enough to defend. It was the Chinese that supported Taiwanese independence for nearly a century and now they want Taiwan back because they suddenly find the island useful for military / strategic purpose. The world really shouldn't buy China's narrative on the cross strait relationship. Today it's this, tomorrow's that. We Taiwanese are really tired of China's ridiculous claims and incessant demands and pretty soon the rest of the world will be too.
I had a somewhat similar experience in China when I studied there in 1997. I was walking with a local girl (just a friend) in Beijing's Wangfujing area. One of the local men suddenly got very aggressive with her and asked her "why she didn't like Chinese people." The nationalism and racism was evident then. One of the local swimming pools in Haidian District (Beijing) wouldn't allow entry to non Chinese. I visited Taiwan two years later in 99, it was/still is much better, truly a different country in my view.

Nationalism is a horrible thing in every country. I lived in China in 2012/2013. Luckily. Any of similar situations happened to me. But moving to Taiwan from China felt like moving back home even though I had never lived there before. Taiwanese friendliness and levels of safety are just on very different levels. It’s probably impossible to find a country that can compete with that :)

Chinese have viewed foreigners either with hostility or envy since 1840. Sour grape/loser mentality/patriotism and also the fact that "Americans are overpaid, over sex, and over there". These issues are the same worldwide. Taiwan's mainland unification issue makes things much more complicated and guess which foreign nation is in the middle of all these?
Respect and self-discipline is important in Taiwan. You wanna have a good and safe life in Taiwan then please follow the rule. Majority of Taiwanese are nice and friendly. Do not ruin the rule ,you will feel happy in Taiwan.

That's so interesting that both of you got 登革熱. I'm a Taiwanese and I dont really know someone who I know get 登革熱. Did Tayler get it in the south of Taiwan?
I think the netting is to prevent mosquitoes, avoiding the possibility of mosquitoes accidentally transmitting your dengue fever to others, causing cross-infection among patients in the same ward but with different types of dengue fever. Dengue fever is a viral disease, and antibiotics cannot treat it. That's why doctors say there is no medication for this disease. However, based on your condition, they may provide you with some medications to alleviate the symptoms.

I found out later about this. The thing is, when the things happen, no one explains you. And you can really freak out. Hahaha

Totally get it. Doctors in Taiwan are super busy, might not explain stuff too much🤣 Glad you're all better👍
I still don't get why USA overcharge so much for medicial bill. I know some that does require a lot of $$$ when you *need a surgery* but even one where they issue xx pill to eat can cost you over XX,XXX NT (or even hundreds of thousands USD if you had to stay in the hospital for a week) Part of me felt its good to have free market (but they need to be more upfront with the fee -aka no hidden fees- ) but the way hospital has become seem like it got monopolized. e.g Hospital that earns not too much gets brought out and become private company for private (if it didn't decide to close down for its real estate value which leads to even less hospital = less competition => more monopoly in price > circles continue for x years and is what you see today.

It's not cheap in Taiwan. We pay so little because the public fund covers most of the cost.

You don't understand that most infected cases were brought in from foreign countries at that time. I guess that a foreigner walking around without a mask posed a big threat to a small country where COVID could spread easily. Plus, Taiwan couldn't get Vaccines by then due to our political situation.
You guys don't know what nationalism is? Don't you know the politics and history? You are the one who from the Free world, And then go to China. Where is slaved?
