American boycotting Japanese cars in the 1980s is totally different matter from Chinese boycotting Japanese merchandise. Japan has been a American puppy since the end of WWII. Americans boycotting Honda/Toyota because they started threatening the auto market shares of US big-3; However most Chinese boycotting Japanese merchandise have a lot to do with the Japanese war crimes during WWII: e.g.: Massacre of Nanking, human experiment of germ-warfare by Troop Unit-731, etc. In fact, it was United States inherited most of the experimental results of Unit-731, and thus single-handedly exonerated Japanese war crimes in WWII.
