美麗在心頭
原唱:黃耀明 | 作曲:黃耀明/李端嫻
填詞:林夕 | 編曲:Alan Ip
When tasked with arranging "美麗在心頭" in the early 2000s, I was granted completely freedom to explore my musical instincts. The initial demo, sung not by Anthony but by a vocalist whose identity remains shrouded in mystery, featured a simple yet effective chord progression programmed on a synthesizer.
I opted to use a single clean electric guitar to lend the song a lush, dreamy character that would elevate the singer's performance to new heights. I also aimed to ensure that the song would be adaptable for live performances, with minimal overdubs and instrumentation.
Given the song's profound lyrical and musical beauty, penned by the talented Vee and Anthony, I felt compelled to dress up the chords in a less conventional manner that would imbue the song with a greater sense of melancholy and hope. My goal was to create a lingering, memorable mood that would remain with audiences long after the final notes had faded away.
With the arrangement process underway, I found myself thoroughly inspired by the music of the time, particularly the trip hop and ambient genres that had emerged during the 1990s. As such, I incorporated low, sonorous tones and melodies that conveyed a sense of melancholic introspection, coupled with an ethereal ambient soundscape that accentuated the song's powerful emotional pull.
In order to achieve the desired tonal expression, I utilized a Parker Fly Mojo guitar that blended electric and acoustic sounds with stunning clarity, and recorded the instrument directly through my Roland GP100 guitar processor. I also incorporated a Match guitar amp emulation to add richness to the guitar's sonic profile, and applied compression, chorus, 1/4 note delay, and hall reverb to give the sound added depth and resonance.
For the song's intro and ending, I again relied on my trusty Parker Fly Mojo guitar and Roland GP100 processor, but this time I added a Dunlop wah-wah pedal that served as a subtle emotional accent, conveying the song's poignant sense of longing and nostalgia.
When I received the final mixdown version featuring Anthony's transcendent vocal performance, I was truly taken aback by the beauty and melancholic mood I had crafted. I remain enamored with this song to this day and sincerely hope that you find it as affecting and memorable as I do. Finally, I must express my deep gratitude to Anthony and Vee, and especially Vee for her invaluable assistance and support throughout the song's creation.
