Delhi Assembly Election Results | Thumping Victory For BJP, All Eyes On CM Race, Kejriwal Concedes Defeat
The BJP is all set to return to power in Delhi after 27 years by dashing the AAP's hopes for another term. Having last won the capital in 1993, the BJP aims to end its long drought, while the AAP is on track for its first-ever defeat in an assembly election since coming to power in 2013.
Former Chief Minister and AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal, former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia are among the top leaders who lost ground in the BJP storm.
Meanwhile, the Congress party, which was once dominant in Delhi from 1998 to 2013, is facing another significant loss, as it has failed to win any seats in the last two elections.
Delhi, with 1.55 crore eligible voters, recorded a turnout of 60.54 per cent in the February 5 election.
A three-tier security arrangement with 10,000 police personnel, including two companies of paramilitary forces at each centre, has been put in place. The Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP has dominated Delhi's political map since 2015, routing both the BJP and the Congress in the assembly polls held that year by winning 67 of the 70 seats.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was humbled and honoured after the BJP came to power in Delhi after a gap of 27 years. In a post on X, PM Modi said, "Jana Shakti is paramount! Development wins, good governance triumphs. I bow to my dear sisters and brothers of Delhi for this resounding and historic mandate to BJP. We are humbled and honoured to receive these blessings. It is our guarantee that we will leave no stone unturned in developing Delhi, improving the overall quality of life for the people and ensuring that Delhi has a prime role to play in building a Viksit Bharat."
"I am so proud of each and every BJP Karyakarta (worker), who has worked very hard, leading to this outstanding result. We will work even more vigorously and serve the wonderful people of Delhi," added PM Modi. The Prime Minister will address the BJP workers at the headquarters of the saffron party in the national capital in the evening.
