D, for some Italians I think it is much easier to understand this new (not even that much) path of Maneskin. Apart from the emotional issues of Damiano and the lyrics (saying goodbye to his girlfriend after many years is equivalent to saying goodbye to his adolescence and to many long-dreamed dreams... and also taken for granted), the musical part draws heavily on various musical traditions Italian. Honestly, I don't know how much they did it consciously but, although their latest ballads are international, they have the flavor of a lot of Italian singer-songwriter writing from the last 50 years. Absorbed, digested and made their own. And in the purely musical insertions, especially (but not only) those that appear very rock... the base is very reminiscent of ancient Neapolitan popular music (but it would be better to say Mediterranean). They are growing really well, creating new things using their roots like accomplished musicians do and it fills me with joy.

I totally agree with you about "the flavor of a lot of Italian singer-songwriter writing from the last 50 years." It seems Damiano is making love with the words he's singing, in a sad and deep way, as Domenico Modugno did for instance. I have been thinking about it but never saw it written so clearly. It's actually not a love/breakup song, Damiano said it's a song explaining how he experienced fame at some point, how it often felt like they had "sold their soul to the devil" because it brought so much negative with it, and the song is written as a conversation with that devil.

the first part of the song deals with a pact with the Devil for success/Fame while the second part deals with when they decide to break this pact. This song sounds more like Rush than Theater of Wrath Vol 1 and at least for me it was supposed to be inside Volume 2 then with Beggin a merry-go-round started from which they haven't gotten off in almost 3 years. Two years ago they played part of it at the Circus Maximus concert in Rome.

Dami broke up with his longtime gf. So he is very sad now. I've noticed he was almost crying while he sang Valentine for the first time in Australia. 💔 But this song is about negative side of fame, it's like a pact with the devil, he takes his live and gives the talent instead. In the chorus he is trying to break that pact to stay with his loved one.
