Everyone is entitled to their own opinion! She is criticizing instead of sharing in my opinion! No hard feelings! Tiffany should use a different approach to share her English learning skill!
This goes to show how disrespectful and irresponsible people can be on a virtual platform. I bet most of those people have trouble conversing in Cantonese, leave alone understanding English. After all these years the majority of people from Hong Kong still can't see past the accent of a language. What a pity. There is more to a language than meets the eye. A language can reveal a lot about the history and heritage of the people that speak it. The way a person speaks and the words he/she chooses disclose a lot about him/her. A person's language usage and his/her attitude towards mastering the language can show his/her socioeconomic status, intelligence, education level, income potential, ethics, social circle and many more. Moreover, language usage dictates cultural transformation and vice versa. The dynamic of a conversation goes beyond the accent and has more to do with how well the participants adjust to one another's level and style to keep the conversation flowing. Tiffany, please keep up the good work and don't take the negative comments to heart. "Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience." - Mark Twain.
If you listened to her closely, she actually said "now it's the first time I've actually ever tasted wine". What the actress meant was she went to a sommelier workshop back in Canada but was not given any wine to taste, instead she was able to actually taste wine for the first time ever in HK. I guess those sommelier workshops are not necessarily required to provide any wine for students. :/ Anyhow, keep up the good work! English speakers actually don't care much about grammar when they speak compared to non-English speakers. However this video does help in differentiating the usage of grammar and I think we could all use some reminder from time to time that grammar is equally important in speaking when compare to writing.

when she said "now that was the time I actually tasted wine" she was right. Native speakers do not have to worry about grammar and sometimes doesnt even know the correct grammar because it is so natural and all of this crap you are saying, doesnt mean anything
@TiffanyTeachesEnglish7 жыл бұрын
The vast majority of native speakers have an instinctive understanding of grammar even though they may not be able to explain the rules explicitly, Kelly. And that doesn't mean that second language learners don't have to understand how grammar works. Hope that clarifies the matter!

Great explanation. But you are not qualified enough to comment on her accent. Let’s not forget she’s a Canadian. It’s like a foreigner that could speak Cantonese judging a Hong Konger’s native Cantonese accent. Maybe it’s just me but don’t see the point here.
She studied in Canada. Of course her English should be good, but not everyone.

lol can this channel at least get someone who can speak english without a blaring canto accent to educate people on sounding natural? I understand that accent is not the sole point of her 'analysis' - but surely I'm not the only one who finds it ironic that the critic sounds far worse than the subject... (as one can see from the comments on this video..)

The thing that is funny about this video is that this "Tiffany", whoever she is, is commenting on the English grammar and pronunciation of 朱千雪, who is speaking in flawless, completely unaccented American/Canadian English. Tiffany breaks down each of 朱千雪's sentences, repeats it, and then makes a comment on what she thinks of it. The irony here is that Tiffany's own English, although quite good, is clearly accented, and not at the native-speaker level of the person she is commenting upon. I'm a decent ping pong player. But if I were to critique the technique of Ma Long? That would be similar to what's happening here :P
@TiffanyTeachesEnglish6 жыл бұрын
Your argument, although well-phrased and interesting, may not be as convincing as it sounds. There are film critics who will comment on how films are made (Just look at how many people are criticising how the latest Star Wars film was made), though they themselves may not be film makers. Does the fact that they are not film makers mean that they know little about film making? Does their not being film makers disqualify them from being critics? I was trying to dissect and analyse what was good and perhaps not so easy to understand about Tracy's English. Does that mean I was saying my English was better than hers?
@TiffanyTeachesEnglish6 жыл бұрын
And pronunciation and accent, while without doubt IS an important part of a language, isn't EVERYTHING. Using a language well is also about choosing the right structures and expressions to convey what you mean. I hope I have made myself clear.

I guess the biggest issue here is that Tiffany looks at English as a subject rather than a communication tool...
Language is about communication and commanding a clear accurate understanding from others; be it for listening, writing, speaking or reading. Keep up with your brilliant work! I leant English because I migrated when I was young but I definitely don't possess the grasp of the language as well as you. When English is a first language/taught as a native language, I think Grammar definitely takes a back foot. I still don't know why I use the tenses I do or what a gerund is. Hahahahaha! I suppose that's very common amongst most English speakers.

(without going into Tracy's video) I think Tiffany breaking down each definition and explaining the pronunciation habits would really assist those who are learning English. Even where I'm from, pronunciation hasn't been an issue from the internationals, but the habits like how she said "twenty" = "twennie" is something English learners can really take away from this because I don't even realize I say it either. Maybe not everyone agrees with her critique but there are positive aspects to learn. Ironically watching this I think Tiffany has helped explain the English language in Cantonese terms more, great job.

It’s better for u, Tiffany to demonstrate how better your English is in a causal conversation. Not only pinpoint other’s minor mistakes
@TiffanyTeachesEnglish7 жыл бұрын
Looking forward to producing more videos where I can demonstrate how one can speak better English in a casual conversation, Andy. Mistake pinpointing is not the point of this video. There's a saying that goes like this in English: "Shoot for the moon and if you miss, you will still be among the stars." (訂下如奔向月亮的遠大志向,縱使不能到達,也會躋身於繁星之中。) A similar saying in Chinese goes like this: 「取法乎上,僅得其中;取法乎中,僅得其下」 I think these sayings tell us that aspiring to perfection in honing a craft, be it English speaking or anything else, will go a long way. That's why I always aspire to be as accurate and error-free as I can be. Of course, that's not always something easy to achieve. This video is not meant to pinpoint anyone's mistakes. They are a means of expression of such an attitude. Hope my clarification will clear the air! ;)

What's wrong with having a Cantonese accent in her spoken English? She is a Hongkonger. You should never be ashamed of your own accent as long as your pronunciation is correct. Even in Britain, people from different districts have a range of accents. Aussies have an Australian accent and American got an American accent. But none of them are ashamed of their accent despite their potential preferences to a certain accent.
@alysonchtx7 жыл бұрын
Fisher Lam agreed. There is nothing wrong with having a Cantonese accent. In fact I think an accent is a great representation of where one comes from. Language serves the purpose of communication. As long as one is understood by another person, the spoke language has fulfilled its purpose.
I also got confused when she said 'now this is actually the first time I've tasted wine'. I'm sure she made the mistake because she was speaking quickly but I agree with you that the mistake cam cause a lot of confusion for viewers.
