Unbreakable, The Crow and V for Vendetta are the only comic book movies that really get better with age because they put good storytelling above action or CGI. Most movies in that genre age like milk.

Interesting to see how much Signs and Split have moved up on your list since the last time you ranked M Night’s movies. I watched Signs about a month ago and after I watched it, I was like I have to see Sean’s ranking! Surprised me it was so low! Same goes for Split, it has to be one of my favourite movies ever and seeing that low in your last time was a big surprise too. It’s crazy how time ages movies in the best ways sometimes :)

I have t seen all of his films so I’ll give a top 5 ranking: 1. The Sixth Sense 2. Signs 3. Unbreakable 4. Split 5. Knock at the Cabin The Sixth Sense is one of my favorite movies of all time, when I saw it as a kid the ghosts scared me and the twist floored me. Signs is also another favorite of mine. Unbreakable is an amazing movie but I don’t have the same nostalgia like I do for the top 2 which factors into the placement. Split amazing. Knock I enjoyed a lot, it may drop a spot after I give it time, but for now I really liked it, definitely my favorite from him since Split.

I honestly love M. Night. There's no other live-action American director working right now (Michael Mann, Ang Lee, and Steven Soderbergh are the only other ones I can think of), so willing to experiment with form (both in directing and writing) in ways that bring out so much character as he is. For all but one of his films, almost everything needs a shift in perspective to really understand. He's more meticulous and honestly more sentimental than most people give him credit for. My List: Terrible: 15. Avatar: The Last Airbender (I appreciate how he's homaging Hong Kong greats and it means that some shots or scenes are almost exciting, but there's very little else to defend here) 14. After Earth (Snooze...) Bad: 13. Praying with Anger (Maybe it's fitting that someone as eclectic as him starts here.) Mediocre: 12. Wide Awake (A pitch-black comedy. I found some of it kinda funny but definitely not all that good.) Good: 11. Lady in the Water (About as complete a work of personal therapy as The Fabelmans. Sure it's undercooked and the self-indulgence is very silly, but the images and way he manages to create a sorta magic about escaping into fantasy during difficult times is felt at times. Silly, but sincere.) 10. The Happening (Something unsettling about the humour and horror at the same time captures a uniquely off-kilter atmosphere. The dialogue itself is bizarre but it does a really good job of capturing the anxiety and the feeling of coping with loss.) Great: 9. Split (A tingling, tight lil psycho-thriller. All of the performances are amazing and Shyamalan plays his formal hand all too perfectly.) 8. Glass (The first 40 minutes are kinda boring but the rest is terrific. Slow-burn character study and a terrific thriller with a genuinely brilliant anti-climax, even if the final scene itself is a bit stiff. Sam Jackson's best performance.) 7. Knock At the Cabin (M. Night is always very economical with his storytelling and I think this is probably the best way to see it.) 6. Old (This is some all-time great atmospheric filmmaking for me. Some of the dialogue is clunky but the specificity he can get out of these performances and those strange lines perfectly suits the situation and everything before the terrible finale is so tightly constructed.) 5. The Sixth Sense (Probably his safest film which is why it's the most popular. Does almost everything right, not much else to say.) 4. Unbreakable (Being edgy right when it was cool, but it doesn't mean he skimps on character. No no, it's a good, mature psychological superhero portrait that will only age better.) Excellent: 3. The Village (I dunno man, I just get very emotional about this. It's a devastating portrayal of a society learning to survive in a world of pain. I think every piece of this is so precisely constructed and impactful.) 2. Signs (The most Spielbergian film he could possibly make. Basically what you said, it's distinctly and bluntly human, and the flourishing dramatic and comedic touches let this cover all bases so effectively. Really terrific stuff.) 1. The Visit (Kind of amazing, mainstream experimental cinema with just the right touches of comedy and drama. Shyamalan has so many great ideas with found footage and every scene is just tingling with excitement that he can pick up a camera and play with perspective like this. The characters are nuanced and fascinating, it all comes together to make a devastating family drama while being a horror movie. Absolutely terrific stuff.)

@Chuck Buskee In terms of working directors that aren't actually experimental (Jodie Mack and Don Hertzfeldt), who else is there? In comparison to most of the ones I could think of, M. Night seems almost radical.
@jblitz1556
@jblitz1556 Жыл бұрын
@Chuck Buskee Mind giving some examples? I'm thinking of some of the big ones (James Wan, Mike Flanagan, Karyn Kusama, Ari Aster, Robert Eggers, Jennifer Kent, Andy Muschietti, Guillermo del Toro), and maybe the only one I could see what you mean is Jordan Peele.
@jblitz1556
@jblitz1556 Жыл бұрын
@Chuck Buskee I'll definitely give ya Eggers, not sure why I didn't include him. I like Aster fine enough but he kinda just uses the 70s playbook in both writing and directing. Lynch definitely would've been included but I swear I read somewhere that he's done with features and if anything will only make shorts and very possibly TV now (ie. not exactly working anymore). Might not be true but I remember that being on my mind when I wrote that comment. I still think M. Night consistently takes his style into new, exciting directions (especially after The Visit) and that's something I associate with Soderbergh, Mann, and Ang Lee.

I haven’t seen all of his films, but here’s the five films I have seen: #5: The Happening, Now even though it’s in last place I actually don’t hate this movie, I think it works well enough, I know it has its flaws and the casting of Mark Wahlberg isn’t the best choice, but I still find it watchable and it works for me. “You have a problem with that?” #4: The Village, I get what you mean how Shyamalan was just spinning his wheels to develop the twist, “Well, agree to disagree,” but I don’t think it’s bad, I was actually shocked with the twist of Noah being the monster and the cast is pretty great here so I like it. #3: The Sixth Sense, To be perfectly clear there’s a massive jump from The Village to The Sixth Sense, it does a fantastic job at distracting you with the mystery about the boy, and then the twist is absolutely iconic, and the characters are people you actually care about so when the twist happens, you’re shocked and you feel sorry for Bruce Willis’s character, so one of the best films of all time. #2: Unbreakable, an M. Night Shyamalan film that is also a comic book movie, and it’s awesome, it’s not about the action and spends it’s time developing the characters, combine that all with the twist and it makes a close second of the list. #1: Signs, I love this movie so much and rewatching it recently just made me like it even more, it works so well with setting up little details that actually become the most important pieces of the twist, all of the actors are perfect, and the ending is so uplifting and all of it makes it my favorite Shyamalan film.

M. Night is a lot more "hit" for me than "miss" (havent seen after earth, lady in water or airbender) Worst - The Happening - a great comedy 9. The Visit - solid thriller with great comedy 8. Old - really interesting mix of bad dialogue, unintentional comedy, strong suspense and a cool concept 7. Knock At The Cabin - very effective thriller with great performances 6. Glass - interesting trilogy closer 5. The Village - Roger Deakins wow 4. Sixth Sense 3./2/ Unbreakable/ Signs 1. Split - great twist, suspense and interesting character dynamics (of course, McAvoy is incredible)

Strongly disagree about several of these. The Village is a much-maligned movie, for reasons I don’t fully understand. Old is kind of a bad movie, I admit. But Glass is a very thoughtful movie, albeit that it subverts expectations in a way that will make some people angry. I think it’s a pretty well thought out depiction of how we would actually treat superheroes if they existed. Split doesn’t belong above The Village imo. The Happening is hilarious garbage, though, agreed.

Though it goes near the level of sublime quality as The Sixth Sense (his masterpiece) and Unbreakable (his other masterpiece), I enjoyed Wide Awake--it was a great sophomore effort told through a child's eye, it really captured the zeitgeist feel of both the 90s and what Catholic school is like (I'm a product of both 90s and Catholic upbringing so I know), finally the message is all in the title...if you are "awake" enough to get it.

8. The Last Airbender 7. After Earth 6. Old (I aged myself watching this, took about 4 sittings before I finally finished it… and I wish I would’ve given up after the first attempt) 5. Signs (Didn’t really care for the religious aspects tbh and the third act underwhelmed for me, enjoyed the acting tho) 4. Glass 3. Unbreakable 2. Split (I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this, I was invested throughout and McAvoy seriously gave one of the best performances of that year. Also the “twist” was brilliant) 1. The Sixth Sense (Just a classic with an all-time twist)

I've only walked out of two movies in my whole life and The Village was one of the two. I haven't watched the new one yet. My list 1. Unbreakable gets better with age 2. The Sixth Sense also gets better with age and it's fun even knowing the twist 3. Split was a great comeback 4. Signs, I'm still mixed on the 3rd act but most of it was pretty good 5. The Visit was one of the very few found footage movies that I have liked over the years 6. Glass, it was ok and the good outweigh the bad but this could've been an all time great trilogy if Glass was a little better 7. Wide Awake is cute family movie 8. The Lady in the Water is a misfire but I respect some things about it and I think it gets too much hate. I can't even rank the rest because they're all terrible from this point on, Like I said, The Village was so terrible and I couldn't even finish it in theaters. I guess that one goes at the very bottom.

I’m new here (great content btw) so I don’t know but are you only a movie guy? I only ask because The Last Airbender is too high at “tied for last” (especially being discussed second). It’s objectively terrible on its own merits but even more so after you compare it to the (high quality of the) source material. It’s probably in my bottom 3 or even bottom 2 films I’ve ever had the misfortune to watch but that’s just my two cents; keep up the good work. Have a good one!

I ve seen Sixth Sense it blew my mind!! I ve seen Unbreakable, i absolutely loved it. I ve seen Signs, i found it intriguing at first but boring at the end I ve seen The Village that everyone hates, and i really liked the fact that i was being played the whole time when the twist ending came. I found it to be mindblowing and clever. The film was overall atmospheric and almost hypnotic in a good way. I didnt know at the time what was everyone talking about, about hating it. Up to that point for me M.N.Shymalan was a genious. Then Lady in the Water came and after that every new entry of his was getting worse and more stupid than the previous one. My hopes were getting bigger again while watching the Visit but then again Glass, Old and Knock on the Cabin happened. At the end of the day he had all the potential to be one of the biggest directors in hollywood but being stuck in the logic of finding twist endings, casting his movies constalty in the most bizare and out of place way and finding weaker and weaker stories to adopt helped me finally conclude that he is pretendious and mediocre at best. Seems to me after all these years that his masterpieces (the 6th sense and unbreakable) came out of pure luck and nothing else. After Earth, The Last Airbender, Lady in the Water, The Happeining, Old and Knock on the Cabin may be the worst movies ever reached the silver screen. I am done with you mr M.Night. Enough is enough

Sixth Sense is one that absolutely clicks for me on every level by the end. Unbreakable and Signs are highly underrated movies that are emotionally satisfying too. The Visit is a very cool movie too. Not amazing but it’s effective. The Village has some awesome moments but it feels like it only exists for the twist. Glass starts extremely promising and has one of the worst endings I’ve seen to a movie. The Happening is horrible but it’s fun to watch and laugh at.

Shyamalan is one of my favorite directors, but he ONLY works when he has a small, emotionally repressed cast in an isolated setting. My rankings sans Knock at the Cabin: 1. The Sixth Sense 2. Signs 3. Unbreakable 4. Split 5. The Village (has problems, but I love it) . 6. The Visit (I can't get over the diaper scene, even years later) 7. Glass (the logic of the ending doesn't even deliver what it thinks it delivers. So disappointing after the banger 1st half) 8. Lady in the Water (self-indulgent, but it has a strange charm) 9. The Happening (absurdist hilarity) . 10. Wide Awake (boring) 11. Old (stupid) 12. After Earth (very boring) . . . . . . . The Last Airbender (unranked because it's worse than any film he will ever make)
