It's hard going to places like this. My mother's family were Greeks from Turkey, expelled in 1922. They were certainly more fortunate than the Armenians, or even many Greeks from other regions. I went to the place her father came from and saw where the house was; the remains of the church he was baptized in. I'm glad I went but it was like visiting the theatre as the entire set was being dismantled; a feeling that as beautiful as the place was, it had nothing left to give me.

+3choBlaster I never said Turks weren't killed. They were. Not "millions," but many, Kolokotronis even bragged about it. (The Greeks of Chios were almost entirely wiped out in retaliation.) I said it is difficult to go to places like this. My mother's father was from the Island of Marmara. I've been there as well as Ayvalık, whose families came from Crete. They went through the same things, and I have nothing but respect for them. As much as I love Turkey and the Turkish people, I'm saddened by the continued (though slowly changing) attitude of denial in Turkey. And the fact remains that when it comes to Greeks, they've pretty much succeeded in wiping out the Istanbul Greeks and their culture, through direct deportation, taxation, organized pogroms and policies making it impossible for their schools to operate efficiently. There are maybe 1500 Greeks left in Istanbul out of a one-time population of over 250,000, and most of them are elderly. They were used as "bargaining chips" in disagreements over Cyprus. The Muslims of Greece had problems too, but they still have a sizeable population there, as much as 40% in parts of Thrace. What is also interesting is that in Turkey, the experiences of Muslims from Greece were not talked about; they just tried to assimilate them as much as possible. Only recently - after anyone of an age who could remember their life there has long since died - are they taking any interest in learning about their lives there, what they left behind, what they have managed to preserve. BTW I say "Muslims" and not "Turks," not to deny anyone's Turkishness, but because there were other Muslim groups who were also forced to leave Greece as well, like Pomaks, Chams (Albanian Muslims) and Muslim Roma.

Well there are millions now in turkey from Greece as well. My grandfather speaks greek. That is his mother tongue. His parents were forced to move from Greece.
