Without doubt one of the finest recordings ever made of this great Christmas music. I’m fortunate to have an original issue of this CD. An audiophile spectacular and Lutheran masterpiece. It is a great shame that Calvinism denigrated the Great Lutheran Mass. One would have been hard pressed to see a difference between this service and a Catholic Mass of the same period, clouds of incense, exquisite vestments, and the crucifix held high in processional. A very great loss indeed.

This was forwarded to me by a true friend: what a way to start the morning! Christmas in August. Splendid. Set your theological grumbles aside, silly pastors, and rejoice . . .

@s2000r1titan Yes, this is the way our Lutheran forefathers would have worshiped. There would also have been beautifully embroidered vestments (albs, chasubles, stoles, maniples, etc.) for the clergy. Also there would have been incense, bells, the crucifix, and many other things that many Lutherans today consider "too catholic." The protestantizing Calvinistic influence on Lutheranism has been very destructive to our liturgical tradition. Would that we could restore it!

@mickmcclain I would dispute the description of Praetorius as a 'Renaissance' composer. He was undoubtedly a Reformation composer. The difference is one of philosophy - one is Aristotelian, the other is Biblical.. Oh, and I, like you, grabbed it as soon as it came out - the opportunity to hear a service the way my Lutheran forefathers would have less than 100 years after Dr Martin was phenomenal. It's almost impossible for find these days. Maybe 2nd hand on Amazon.

The rejection of the real (not just spiritual) presence of Christ in the Eucharist, the rejection of the truth that the grace of God is given through the sacraments (which are not mere signs of grace), the espousal of double predestination, a wrong view of sanctification that leads to trust in works--I could go on and on. Anyone who says Luther was a Calvinist doesn't know Luther.

It's the Trinitatiskirche (Trinity Church) in the city of Wolfenbüttel, Lower Saxony, Germany. Michael Praetorius worked there for a couple of years.

@pastorjackw I would argue that the WCF went too far in attempting to do away with anything resembling the Papists - hence I can happily attend a Lutheran Church here in Oz and still maintain a Reformed understanding of all things in the line of Van Til & Rushdoony. Real presence? I have no drama with this. Double Predestination? Romans 9. Trust in works? huh? Dunno where you get off saying that? The De Servo Arbitrio is Reformed, not Lutheran, as these terms are readily understood.

@s2000r1titan Umm, "dude," I am sorry...that you're a Calvinist. And it is precisely that "regulative principle" of which you speak that is the problem. Since there is no room for sacred tradition, but only Biblical reductionism, (an attempt at re-creating Biblical worship) Calvinists embraced iconoclasm. The Prussian Union (a forced union between Lutherans and Calvinists) impoverished Lutheran worship. As far as the Westminister Conf. is concerned, its problems myriad.

@pastorjackw Umm, sorry to burst your bubble, dude, but I'm a Calvinist. And I would've thought that, contrary to restoring a liturgical tradition (the historical veracity of which you have to establish), you should be more interested in restoring Biblical worship. I happen to think that The Westminster Confession is brilliant everywhere except in it's 'Regulative Principle of Worship', and I think Dr Martin Luther would agree. He was, after all, a Calvinist.

@pastorjackw I have already stated that I believe the Regulative Principle is unBiblical, and cannot be justified in any form. Reading your bit here is as bad as reading some of the Reformed Presbyterian Church nonsense, where the body of Christ is reduced to those who alone hold to exactly the same understanding of even the smallest things like those you mention here. Perhaps you might consider interacting with them - they're always up for a fight. People might even pay money to watch it!
