The capability of a nation to build and use a warship is very important and demonstrates power to it's neighbours. When Mărășești were leaving the Romanian shore for a training mission the other countries navy forces arround the Black Sea were in alert state, no one afforded not to consider that. Romanian Navy is quite experienced, in ww2 the first "Moskva" ship was sunk near our shores, we had, 3 submarines and 3 destroyers(one named also Mărășești). In Galați shipyard we had built 2 U-boat submarines under German licence and plans, for Romanian Navy Forces, so here we have experienced engineers. Germany delivered for this job, parts and sub-anssemblies. Of course some warship builders from UK or other European builders can laugh but they really don't enjoy competition, they only have a "superior" bad attitude as always, as similarly US disrespect Chinesse Navy for example.

@@georgevladimirovich7190 Yes the 2 submarines named Rechinul(The Shark) and Marsuinul wasn't built for German Navy but for Romanian Navy, they were assembled in Galati shipyard using plans and parts from Germany by Romanian Engineers. These two served very little for Romania when were finished at the end of wwII, 1944-45 being taken as new(say stolen better) by USSR as spoils of war for Romanians fighting against them. The 2 submarines were very modern for that days, much more then soviet ones, so they inspired to build their new fleet. Still in that year in service Rechinul saved many German and Romanian lives during evacuation from Crimea peninsula.

@@gheoman You know something but not quite everything. During the 2nd world war Romania had three regular size submarines and five midget submarines made in Italy. Delfinul (the Dolphin) was built entirely in Italy where it was commissioned under the command of Bibi Costachescu, whom I had the honor to have him as a Math Teacher when enrolled as an officer cadet at the Marine Institute in Constanta. The other two submarines, Rechinul (the Shark) and Marsuinul (The Porpoise) were bult in Romania but thier late entry into service prevented them from any action. The evacuation from Crimea was supported by the Romanian navy surface vessels protecting large convoys of merchant ships. My father was in command of such ship. There is no indication that Rechinul or Marsuinul participated in this operation. Finally, having technology confiscated as "spoils of war" is not considered stealing. The victorious parties regardless the country are doing this since it is their prerogative. No finally, USSR looked at the Romanian technology which is normal, but they had their own based on which they developed an impressive navy in the Black Sea, in the Baltic as well as later during the cold war. I know the Romanian mentality towards Russia but maybe the time has came to pay attention to what Napoleon himself recommended; Know the qualities of your enemy if you want to win.

For all the people who can't understand why this warship exists: Ceaușescu and his government realized almost 6 decades ago, what Turkey realized 2 decades ago: that it was necessary to develop indigenous defense industry and build own military systems. Turkey, did it admirably. We quite failed. Romania did what it was possible while caught in the middle of the Cold War. Even if it was a member of the Warsaw Treaty, Romania had a different international policy, than the other members. And after the USSR intervention in Czechoslovakia, in 1968, denounced and opposed by Romania, USSR considered us as potential enemies like the nations from NATO. We were allies only on paper.

It was a succes of its generation. This was the first project if its kinde made by our industry. It wasnt a serial product. It was a demonstration of what that industry is capable to do. It had multiple functions: a real working product to be shown to other potential partners for future projects, a real life test for the industry to see where it real is, a real test platform to provide data for next versions. After 2 or 3 generations you can say it is ok or not. How was the first american destroyer? How was the first american sub or jet? How was the first english frigate or first sub or first jet? Did they stop there? Were those a faild products? If they would stop on first version, then yes. As first product designed and made in that period It was more than a success. It is until nou a fail project just because the next generation of engineers, leaders etc didnt continues to develop, improve and implement the next iteration.

Nice video. The history of this ship must be understood in a wider context in which Romania tried to distance itself from the Soviet Union during that period. The Romanian communist leaders created a national defense industry that produced armaments, tanks, planes and warships with domestic resources. On the other hand, Romania has a tradition in the construction of civilian ships. At the end of the 80s, Romania had a commercial fleet of over 300 ships, being the fourth largest in Europe and the 9th in the world. Commercial ships were built in Romanian shipyards. These shipyards also produced small-class (corvettes) and medium-class military ships, such as the Muntenia / Marasesti. Nowadays, the Marasesti Frigate is operational and has performed missions in the Mediterranean Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
@ares1634
@ares1634 2 ай бұрын
To start something is half done thing. Marasesti was a good base to learn from mistakes and build a Romanian navy on it. Should mention also the over 300 commercial vessels and oil tankers built in Romania, during Ceausescu. The 4th commercial fleet in the world, sent to scrap by the soviet agents who came to power after revolution.

Why always the Soviet agents? The destruction of the Romanian merchant fleet was done by the Romanians themselves. Traian Basescu, whom I know personally, has never been a Soviet agent (rather an agent of the Romanian state security) however he participated in the demise of the Romanian merchant fleet.

@@georgevladimirovich7190 Why always twist the subject in a soviet way? Basescu was not a soviet agent and he sold nothing. During his time Romania enterted the EU and NATO. Soviet agents were proven to be those who hijacked the Romanian revolution, like Iliescu, Voiculescu, Roman, etc and the reactivated generals, who sold, closed down and destroyed a well developed, independent country. Vasile, Nastase, Tariceanu, Ponta, Dancila later. They all sold whatever Romania had valuable or internationally worthy and competitive, like heavy industries, steel and chemical industries, oil, gas, gold and mining of rare minerals etc. Romania produced more chemicals than all other east European countries combined, except the Soviet Union and few times more steel than today. Anywhere in the civilized world such deeds would equate for high treason.

Even if the result was a bit of a white elephant, Chaucescu's (sp?) insistence on using only domestic design served as more than a vanity project- it helped to develop homegrown talent, skills, and infrastructure that would make the country less dependent on the USSR. Many nations do this, including the US, etc. (think France's domestic nuclear armament and nuclear power industry, for example- and likewise the importance of an independent defense industry, etc )

Aviation engines (helicopters and jets) : Ukraine.. Aviation Suites and Components: the World... now they have restarted IL-76 production... Fire Control Systems (land and aviation) were using 3-rd party components... It was cheaper then developing them.. so now they are back removing cobwebs and restarting production of gear from the '70 - 80`s. A better way to look at such international defense relations is as a symbiotic (if not always equal) partnership... Anyway, Cheers!

@bholdr----0 2 ай бұрын
@@Kannot2023 Well... As far as national self defense capacity and the efficacy of doctrine... Yes and no. Almost any country can produce small arms, often even light armored vehicles (think MRAPs, etc), and even capable warships (India, Pakistan, etc.).. and it is in their interest to maintain such capabilities (see, for example Of course, the independent ability to field things like top-end fighter jets, carrier(s) with nuclear propulsion, and SSNs and SSBNs are out of the question for all but the FOUR nations who had/have the ability and will to design and build such great power systems independently of allies, etc (and Russia and China are still decades behind the US (and the USSR that was), who used to be tier-two, though competitive for their purposes and capabilities... which is why China still uses Russian engine designs in almost all of their military aircraft!) The fourth is France, btw., which is the ONLY European nation capable of building modern fighters without international dependencies (meaning from the US), right? (Safran, etc)... Such is almost, or likely, more difficult than even their completely independent nukes and ICBMS to procure and credibly maintain. (See: Tejas, Lavi, Gripen (Sweden, for example is not capable of designing and producing too-emd turbojets- China, too, though the CCP is catching up), and so on... ...And the foregoing is not even mentioning the US' massive advantage in capital (the most important and dangerous) ships! (And I am NOT talking about Carriers, which are NOT capital ships!) The bottom line is that every nation with a pretence of sovereignty must have a domestic arms industry to some degree, both to be able to supply themselves and to afford such, insofar as they are able to... (Though France has always been ready to bite the cost bullet to continue to have an independent top-tier set of capital ships- The closest (non-russian) equivalent to the US) is the French second strike MAD deterrent, especially considering their.... Non-standard doctrine!! (The 'warning shot' doctrine! Look it up, it is scary AF, but makes a little t of sense for nations with less than 599-ish warheads... Yikes!)

In a war, the Romanian Navy will just be sitting targets for the USSR yes, but in a standoff? Having a "powerful" ship in the vicinity will be enough to keep the Romanians in the game as diplomatic talks happen in the background. Especially now as the Black Sea is becoming an even more hostile space due to the war, just having a "powerful" naval presence will be enough to make the Russians play nice in the Black Sea. I live in the Philippines and we now experience first hand the failings of not having a "powerful" navy to deter does to one''s national sovereignty if one starts bullying - we have a Mutual Defense Treaty with the US since our independence. We thought that was surely enough to deter any foreign powers to invade our territory. We dont even share a land border with anyone. What's the result? We are now powerless against the PLAN. Romania did good in securing a powerful navy for itself - how it did so, maybe is just the problem.

The succes of a navy ship depends very much on what it did do could do and what effect it did have. Ceaușescu, even though he was a megalomaniac, was no fool. During the mid-1980s, he ordered priority to coastal radars, missile defense systems, and coastal air force readiness. Romania back then used to have even a submarine, the "Delfinul" (the dolphin) purchased from the former Soviet Republic of Ukraine, even though Romania lacked access to the latest naval technology. A missile testing site from that time was built in Topraisar, Constanța County, located not far from the U.S. (NATO) base (playground) and rebuilt in the late 2000s

The Romanian navy has met with the Russian or Ottoman navy before and the numbers prove that the Romanians kept them away from the shore with strategists, skillful maneuvers, adaptability, resilience, tenacity and wisdom: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanian_Navy_during_World_War_II Unfortunately, most of the stories with the Ottomans or with the central powers in WW1 are in Romanian and I'm too lazy to translate them, but the balance of forces is similar and the results the same (in 1877, with one motorboat and two sloops, the Romanians managed to get the Ottomans out of on the Danube sinking two ironclads of almost 500 tons each and in WW1 with a motorboat, the same used 36 years earlier, the Romanian navy managed to force the fluvial fleet of the central powers to retreat upstream in Hungary).

Its a bad idea simply because it was too expensive to develop for the role it was supposed to do. Cruisers are usually for Blue-Water Navies. The Romanian Navy will barely even go to the Mediterranean, much less go to either the Atlantic or Indian Ocean. Money wouldve been better spent if the dictator spent it on more destroyers and shore batteries.

and more ! You see... Romania used to export food for around 60 million people in USSR. It was a barter trade , in exchange for various USSR products. But , at certain moment , URSS started to ask money for technology , was no longer willing to barter for food products. Ceausescu was already engaged to pay back all the external debts to West. Dumb takes on the naval side of things. Yeah the Romanian navy couldn't do dick against the full might of the soviet navy but in world war 3, if it happened, having some ships is very useful as, as the Romanians showed in both world wars and the Ukrainians have shown in the current naval fuckery in the Black Sea, ingenuity and capability to use limited resources can often have them return much more than they should be doing. In my view buying obsolete 2nd rate western ships, tanks and planes is the single stupidest investment the Romanian Navy, Army and Airforce has done since they opted not to develop further the Mig-29 Sniper or the TR-125 because it makes us dependent on western support to have what to shoot back and as Ukraine, funnily enough again, shows: Doing so gets your people killed. In my view the Mig-29 Sniper should've had a couple of examples set aside for reverse engineering and developing our own infrastructure to repair, support and, even, build new Mig-29s or improved derivatives, the TR-125 should've been taken, manufactured and improved with Polish and Czech knowhow over time (maybe nicking some ideas from the Kharkov insane design bureau too) and The Marasesti should've been upgraded in terms of weaponry (swap the 2x 76s with some otomelaras, get better Russian missiles for the anti-ship functions, look into improving the CIWS via domestic gunnery improvements as well and maybe scrap the heli deck for a VLS installation for air defense and take all those steps and knowledge derived from them into newer ships and improving existing ones). And yeah, I am nationalistic in view here because, to be frank, because the moment you slave your military, fundamentally, to one nation or another's expertise you're surrendering part of your national independence for the ease of buying someone else's hand me downs and honestly... it's one of the few things Israel has done right since it was created even if their military's quite literally fucked without western support in terms of ammunition because they can, at least, build the things using said ammo 0 to 100%.

The Ukranian Navy fights without a ship. He is not criticizing the Romanian Navy, its the existence of this cruiser thats the problem. The Romanian Navy has no real need for a ship designed for blue water operations when it is supposed to only protect a coastline that is inside what is basically a lake. Its like building a large heavy tank force when your country is situated in rugged mountains and hills with barely any infrastructure. THAT is the problem.
