"Märkische Heide" is the unofficial anthem of the state of Brandenburg.
The song was written in 1923 by the poet and musician Gustav Büchsenschütz and then spread rapidly throughout Germany via the Wandervögel. From the beginning, it was regarded by many as an old-fashioned song, which must have confused Büchsenschütz, but did not detract from its popularity.
The composer Paul Lincke is often wrongly credited as the author. However, he only arranged the brass band version.
1. Brandenburg Heath,
Brandenburg sand
I: are the Brandenburg's joy,
are his homeland. :I
Rise high, you red eagle,
high above swamp and sand,
high above dark pine forests,
Hail to you, my Brandenburg land!
2. Ancient oaks,
dark beech grove,
I: greening birches
stand by the meadow. :I
Rise high, you red eagle,
high above swamp and sand,
high above dark pine forests,
Hail to you, my Brandenburg land!
This is NOT a Wehrmacht song! There is NO connection to National Socialism!
