The Polish ocean liner, M/S BATORY 1936-1971 was the subject of several political and other strange incidents through the years, especialy during the "Cold War" time between the West and the East. Here is the clip of the British Newsreel from 1949... M/S BATORY reached port of Southampton on her regular transatlantic crossing from New York. She brought with her the mystery of two unscheduled passengers. One had been picked up from a seaplane 75 miles out of New York. The other was Howard Campbell, a stowaway. They were taken ashore by detectives and held under the Aliens' Order...

I was on this ship in 1975-1976. Round trip. Montreal to Southhampton. Tilsbury to Montreal. Spent a year backpacking in Europe. Have photo of hold being loaded up with big American car. Somebody was going over in style. Made some friends on ship very quickly. Still have photos of them on ship. All my own age. Mid-twenties. It was the off season. October. Nine days to cross. No bad weather, but no great weather either. Good food. A lot of impressive things. Met some interesting people. Entertainment at night. Polish dancing. Tax-free booze. Very cheap. All in all, a great experience.

You could not have been on this ship in the years you describe. It was sent to the scrap yard in 1969. The one you were on was the sister ship of the MS Batory. Btw, my family and I emigrated to America from Gdynia Poland in October of 1963 on this ship.

@@peterj5083 You're right. Now that I look at the video, I see that it is stated plainly when this ship was in operation. Here is what Wikipedia has to say about the ship I was on: "TS/S Stefan Batory was an ocean liner built in the Netherlands in 1952. It was operated by Holland America Lines and later Polish Ocean Lines. It remained in service until 1988 and was scrapped in 2000 in Turkey."
