THE ARCTIC BEGINS HERE!
Since 2010, Lomonosov Northern (Arctic) Federal University has been evolving as a leading research and training center and a provider of personnel to support Russia's geopolitical interests in the Arctic. Reflecting the basic goals of the Russian Arctic Strategy 2035, NArFU’s Development Program and is geared towards the nation’s objectives in the field of education, science, digital economy, security and sovereignty.
Since the adoption of the Strategy the campus has seen rapid growth. Its Intellectual Resources Center-Ovsyankin Scientific Library offers Arctic-related data sources, creative spaces, and cross-domain museum projects, one being the Museum of Engaging Sciences.
Two sci-tech platforms - NArFU Technopark and IT Park “Digital Arctic” - involve students in joint technology development projects with businesses from their first days at NArFU. Another facility called Boiling Point brings together young scientists, public bodies, and entrepreneurs.
NArFU builds its training programs on the principles of lifelong learning, an essential prerequisite for continuing professional education in today’s world.
With Preschool Learning Center SOVA, University Grammar School, Research Collaboration House, vocational, undergraduate and graduate schools, NArFU embraces all levels of education.
Co-curricular programs number more than 250 and are intended for learners of all ages. There is Sozvezdye Center that supports gifted children and facilities that promote shipbuilding traditions - Pomor Shipbuilding Yard and NArFU Ship Modelling Club.
NArFU offers degree programs as diverse as engineering, mathematics, natural sciences, and humanities. NArFU comprises 8 higher schools, 2 vocational schools, and three campuses in Severodvinsk, Koryazhma and Naryan-Mar that share 20,000+ students and a staff of 2,500+.
In conducting its academic and research activities, NArFU relies on the important principle of cooperation with businesses. Its laboratories are busy developing technology solutions for the local companies, classrooms are training sought-after specialists, and sci-tech facilities are working to develop solutions to substitute imported know-hows for the Russian Arctic development.
The core of NArFU’s unique laboratory network is Shared Use of Equipment Center “Arktika”.
In fulfilling its research agenda, NArFU relies on cluster approach as an effective framework for supporting the industries operating in the Arctic areas:
-Shipbuilding Cluster
-Fisheries Cluster
-Forest Management Cluster
-Bioresources and Biotechnologies Cluster.
NArFU labs are working to develop nanotechnology-based composite construction materials and technologies for the processing of northern bio-resources. Work is in process to develop methodologies for monitoring, assessing, predicting and preventing risks associated with toxic pollutants transfer of the Arctic ecosystems.
A large amount of studies deals with Arctic petroleum and is led by the
Innovative Centre for Arctic Oil and Gas Laboratory Research. The Centre operates in accordance with international standards, providing its high-tech services to mining projects in the High North and the Arctic Shelf of Russia.
NArFU hosts world-class Research and Training Center “Russian Arctic: New materials, technologies and research methods”. Its membership includes dozens of corporations, research centers and schools in different parts of Russia. Currently running 10 major technology projects, the Center is expected to produce the outcomes that would increase competitiveness of the Russian R&D sector and meet the challenges set out in the country’s strategy for scientific and technological development.
In cooperation with the industries, RTC “Russian Arctic” has set up six laboratories for early-career researchers, that have already produced some unique, successfully performing technologies.
Unique samples and research data are obtained during the voyages of the Arctic Floating University, a research and training expedition that explores high latitudes. Every year during the navigation season, more than 100 experts come to discover the Arctic Ocean and its seas onboard the AFU. Leading to scientific papers, publications and theses, this unique experience can be obtained only at NArFU.
Northern (Arctic) Federal University is an international community.
Every year, its degree programs are pursued by 1100+ international students from 52 countries.
Academic partnerships are being established with CIS, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
Cooperation strategies unfold through network partnerships within the Arctic Region, involving universities and research facilities in the observer countries of the Arctic Council.
