Max 2000 for me performs extremely well often outperforming the 2 element Yagi mounted below it. I replaced the top section with 102”stainless whip which lowers resonance slightly but gave a better match on 12 and15 where it becomes a half wave. It will work on 17 also with higher losses so quality feeder is important but have worked vk and Zl on this band with 400w to compensate for loss.conclusion is its an excellent antenna for the higher bands.

Hi Callum M7WLG here I did tests last year with all the major CB antenna including antron 99 and siro 2016. The winner was the Sirio Gainmaster 5/8 version. Best with receive and transmit and also best SWR they was all tested using the same coax and antenna installed at same height I just put 1 antenna up at a time for 1 month each and wrote down signals and swrs and all sorts the Sirio Gainmaster 5/8 was the Winner.

Cal, very nice. The Starduster you revitalized is neat. Elevated radials, height off ground and multibanded. Definitely a great performer. As far as 11/10 meter antennas. The imax 2000 is a decent antenna at 24'4". The strongest in that class is the aluminum spt 500. With a much narrower bandwidth. You can increase bandwidth on the 500 by shortening it and then playing with the hairpin match. Doing that really didn't seem to hurt performance, and it still worked well. The Maco V58 would be a very close second. Back in the 90s I reworked a V58, made it 24 feet and got rid of the ring match and made a loading coil for it, all trial and error, as I didn't have an analyzer back then. Also I didn't use the radials. From 26 to 32 mhz I had 1.5 to 1.6 to 1 swr. It worked well. It might have had more bandwith, but that's all I had at the time to test. I then put it back to factory design and with a lot of testing as far as performance, it was very close to the same. You come up with neat stuff. Keep up the good work. 73

I use a GainMaster 5/8th wave for 10/12m, got it about 7m off the ground and works very well, the only other band I've used it on is 6m because the band was open, the internal tuner on the FTdx10 could match it and I've nothing up for 6m. Like you said a CB antenna is a great way of getting on 10/12m especially if you've not much room to put stuff up.

Callum, I am an avid SWL listener and former HAM, I do enjoy your videos because you emphasize the importance of antenna’s receiving capabilities. A mismatched or poorly built/deployed antenna could significantly limit you ability to receive signals. Tuning a mismatched antenna is just protecting the radio, but not making the antenna better. If you could run a similar experiment with the Sirio New Vector 4000 for 27-28.5 MHz which an excellent vertical for CB.

I’ve ran many 11m verticals over the years and they all perform fairly similar. Your experiment is pretty consistent with what I’ve done trying them on 15, 17 and 20. Not great performers on those bands but they work. Imax 2000 seems to have a little more bandwidth. One thing I don’t like about CB verticals though and cb antennas in general is how they’re advertised by the wattage. A lot of naive CBers still think more wattage means better performance. I have a friend still stuck in this mode (we both came from cb in the 90s) and when I told him about the dx commander first thing out of his mouth was “how many watts” 🤦🏻‍♂️

I suspect on 20m the coax stub means the Gainmaster just looks like a short at the end of the run of coax. To a lesser extent the same will be true on any other band outside the design bandwidth. I have a homebrew Gainmaster and I can just about get 12m and the lower half of 10m within an acceptable SWR bandwidth.

Your experiment is very welcome because there are a lot of stations on 10m that actually use a Gainmaster. Myself included. And i have already experienced that the classical Gainmaster only works well on 10 and 12. Therefore, i have another Gainmaster, made for 15m. It's of course much longer, but it has a absolutely great performance. Most stations i'm talking to think i am on a beam. Anyway, a comparison between those classic CB verticals you have mentioned in your last video would be very interesting. You would increase your audience too- those "CB only" guys would take attentions to your channel. I also have to add, that there are CB verticals that are not RF grounded, and i believe they do a lot better on bands they are not constructed for compared to a gainmaster.

I think we can expand here, the Gain Master it seems does 12M (sort of based on your testing), 11M and the whole 10M band or close enough to. Hams still have buddies on 11M, at least where I live. So 11M is a nice thing to have. I note you do offer an 11M modification in your antenna documentation. The multi-bander cannot offer the gain nor the bandwidth (on 28MHz) looking at your results plus Sirio's bandwidth claim. Sirio claim the Gain Master has a lower radiation angle and gives typically 1 to 2db gain over a 5/8 ground plain. On 10M the gain master is 2S units up, based on your test results, over the multi-bander. I believe 2S units is 6DB or 4 times more EIRP on transmit compared to the multi bander (I realise radiation angles need to be compared.) As you mention in your documentation, sacrifice 12M to have two tuned sections on10M due to the size of the 10M band. With the Sirio Gain Master you get the whole 10M band out of the box. Going one step further, on the smaller DX Commanders there are loading coils to tune for the lower frequencies, you cannot beat physics! Hypothetically, would it be possible to say, ditch 10 and 12 on a smaller DX Commander etc, use the Sirio Gain Master instead for the higher frequency stuff, and with all that spare wire on the DX Commander antenna, offer 80 or 40m with no loading coils? Do that in a smaller profile, that may be attractive to some. I acknowledge putting up two antennas is more mucking around and in suburbia we have neighbours? Now showing zero neighbour love, the Gain Master can be put on a pole well off the ground, centre fed antenna with no radials required. I am trying to get the best of both worlds. Callum, I think the solution you are offering is fantastic and practical, it gets people on the air, on all if not most of the HF bands, with the ability to do DX. I will buy one of your antennas, but I have a brand new Gain Master sitting in a cupboard, in the box of course 😏.

I used to live in a quite restricted space where I could barely put up any antennas at all and worked 20m for quite the while with Solarcon/Antron A99 at about 4 meters up (until it broke). Not the best obviously, but better than not having antenna at all. In my current location I have way more space and possibilities, but have still only a CB antenna at the moment at about 8-9 meters up. First had a cheap 1/2-wave aluminium "Venom" (it broke), then a Gainmaster 5/8 (it was already half broken, then it broke completely), now some cheap 1/2-wave aluminium no-name antenna (still up). All of them "work" on 20m with a tuner, but obviously none of them are great. I have had a QSO with Callum with the current cheapo antenna. Not optimal, but again, better than no antenna at all. All this rambling just to say that would be very interesting to see a proper comparison between a few different CB-antennas! Maybe add a cheapo aluminium 1/2--wave or 5/8, if available.

Many years ago I used to enjoy trolling at the local radio club, many people had poor results on 10m and maybe did not even notice. I told them "you want to see what the CBers are using". Not entirely flippant, CBers are stuck on one band and they have to make the best of it, so they do. I am too old to be fighting for the very last 1dB but 10dB is worth some effort. Would be interesting to see a fan vertical for maybe 10m, 12m, 15m at the top of the pole with a single radial per band. I suspect it may work rather well. 73

Hahahaha 😂 I've used a cb antenna for years and worked the world from 20m to 10m IMAX 2000 with a tuner. This has to be the worst comparison video I've watched. I think you need to check your home brew antenna.

I think you need to suck it up and put a REAL antenna up for 20m then come back!

Hahaha listen to her just because your mate made you a dummy load aka gain master. There are thousands of amateurs world wide use "CB" antennas without issue on 20m to 10m and the Imax 2000 does it without a problem. Also amateurs with limited space and funds its perfect they can get on hf. If your gonna do comparisons buy a cb antenna like the Imax 2000 or Sirio 827 and don't use one your mate knocked up on a Friday night after half a bottle of gin.
