When talking about increasing the storage you were saying it as if you were actually adding 512mb or 1 gig but in fact its adding 250 or 750 depending on the option you take so the cost per gb is even worse

Thanks for info. Makes sense what you are suggesting. I like the size of the MacMini. How portable and durable is the MacMini? Could one throw it in a suitcase (with some clothes wrapped around it) and check the bag at the airport and expect it to survive; or should one put it in a carry-on bag? What 4K monitors and size of monitor are compatible with the MacMini? Thanks.

I bought the M1 mini as an iMac replacement as I am hoping to be working from two different places this year (much more portable). I bought the 16gb ram and largest HD. Within a few days, I had transfered over everything from the iMac and was able to do everything with Adobe apps, as well as run a Windows VM. Had no issue setting up with wireless keyboard and the new thunderbolt hubs give me everything I need in terms of connections.

I've been running my older Mac mini 2012 off an external SSD as the primary boot volume and it runs just fine over the USB 3 port. So I would say spend the money on as much memory as you can afford, because, like the video says, that's all you'll ever get, then add external storage to your heart's content, because that's the easy part and storage only gets faster and cheaper.

Great advice. I have the 2018 Mac Mini with 512gb storage and I upgraded the RAM to 32gb after purchase to save mega bucks. Not sure if Apple fixed the cooling issues with the Mac Mini since my version but I run a program called MacsFanControl and it keeps my beast nice and cool.....no thermal throttling issues at all with that program running and spinning my fans sooner and faster than what MacOS tells the Mini to do without it.
@Applecompuser2 жыл бұрын
@Zulu Foxtrot - Interesting solution. Do you think greater use of the fan will causer shorter life cycle for fan. Also, is the mac mini you used closed for consumer addition of ram? I thought 5k imac was only product for user upgradable ram but I amy be wrong. Thanks in advance. Best wishes to all.
@8654ZuluFoxtrot2 жыл бұрын
@@Applecompuser I upgraded the RAM myself by watching a KZbin video that detailed how to do it. You need proper tools and be able to work with very small parts, but it's not too difficult. And no noticeable issues with the fan, been running it faster than iOS defaulted it to for 4yrs now. I only needed to do with when I was booted into Windows and playing very graphics intensive games. I had the fan on maximum nearly the entire time. Apple apparently put a very good quality fan in these.

I fully agree. My M1 MacMini is 8Gb/256Gb configuration. I have a 2Tb SSD (which I also used on my previous Intel MacMini) for all data storage. I have only the OS and apps on the internal SSD just like what is discussed here. I also have about 8Tb of external storage for media only...which is backed up to other external drives at least weekly. I do not run apps that require a lot of "rendering" (like Photoshop or iMovie or the professional versions of these types of apps). The "speed" of my media drives may be slow by current standards, but it is plenty fast to play 4K movies without hiccups. So my MacMini is also my AppleTV server which powers 3 AppleTVs around the house...something I've been doing since the first AppleTV in 2007. HOWEVER, for the past 6 weeks since receiving my M1 machine it has not performed like a Mac. All kinds of issues. Spontaneously ejecting external drives, leaving apps open that showed closed in the dock, the Music app starting up spontaneously at random times. None of this was happening on an intel iMac (running Big Sur) that I also own. So finally, last night, I re-installed Big Sur on my new M1 box and as far as I can tell the problems that have plagued the machine ever since I took it out of the box have all disappeared and the machine is running up to expectations. So, apparently, the factory install of Big Sur was somehow buggy....and, yes, it has been upgraded at least twice since I received the computer...it was running the current revision of Big Sur OS. But that has all disappeared and the Mac is finally running like a Mac. Finally, I do not regret my original decisions regarding 8Gb/256Gb configuration. However, I run "Clean My Mac X" and it clearly shows that memory...whether RAM or the use of the CPU...is managed very differently between the Intel and M1 chips. The CPU almost never gets stressed at all and the RAM is fully utilized constantly...this is a big change...it is not noticeable in performance but it is a total shift in computer resource usage philosophy on the part of Apple.

You should be able to do it. Just use the Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adaptor and it should do the trick.

Learning something new everyday here. How much space is used up by the OS and other system files?

So glad to hear that. I mention it in the video - I don’t remember off of the top of my head.

It's in the video. With a few programs like Adobe and a couple of others, then the OS he was left with about 200gb from a 256gb ssd

Any idea how much disk space Apple’s Education Bundle consumes? I’m thinking it takes a LOT of storage, but I don’t have any idea how much.

I am buying mac mini m1 base model 8gb 256 is it enough for a fcpx editor... and can I upgrade 8gigs to 16gigs ram in future

Only flaw I found was Time Machine Backups. If you leave it checked automatic. It will take snap shoots and eat up local space. So i too uncheck it. then go back in terminal and delete all them snapshots. As they were eating up 100gb of space.

Isn’t this the same with any apple computer? Not just the Mac mini?
@TechGearTalk4 жыл бұрын
That is definitely a turn apple made over the last 3 years with most products.

With most newer ones yes. Both the hard drive and the ram are soldered to the motherboard. The ram can be changed but it's a delicate job

When editing from the external SSD, do you run proxies or is it fast enough? I wonder about a larger internal SSD to allow editing on files held internally and then offloading to an external or NAS when complete.

It’s fast enough unless your rendering 6K if u have issues change timeline to 1080p and change back to original just before rendering. I can link a video of u would like?
