I have a MacBook Pro M1 Max (64GB RAM, 8TB storage), which I primarily use for photo editing, and it serves me brilliantly. I’ve never felt the need to upgrade because it handles everything I throw at it effortlessly. You're absolutely right-Apple did an exceptional job with the M1 chips, and I couldn’t agree more.

My old mid-2017 27-inch iMac with 7700K i7, 580 graphics, really was on its last legs. Spinning its fans constantly. So last month, I bought a M2 Max Mac Studio. The base model. I use it as an interior architect. For light admin but mainly large 2D plans and 3D design and rendering. It absolutely flies, doing so silently. An awesome machine.

upgraded from m1 MBA to m4 pro MBP. upgraded to 48gb (wanted 36 but it wasn't an option). coming from 8gb (with 12-16gb memory constantly occupied), the difference is night and day. turns out, for heavy figma files, extra memory is an absolute game changer and a good gpu also helps. thank god i looked at artisright youtube channel for detailed benchmarks, gave an excellent perspective.

@@rbvan Hi! I was sure I would get the 14'', but I've changed my mind after comparing them in the Apple store. If you have an external monitor, then 14'' will be perfect. But if you will use MPB only, I suggest getting the 16'' instead. I hope this helps. I am still debating the configuration. Did you decide on that?
@rbvan
@rbvan 24 күн бұрын
@@aida7784 thanks for your feedback. I sold a 16” 2019 MacBook Pro and have been to Apple 4 times trying to decide on which size. The 16 display size is beautiful, but it’s the large footprint and height of the display that I’m struggling with a bit. At home I do have a 27” 4K BenQ designer monitor so I can connect to that. In fact I often used it even with my 16” MBP because I like having multiple browser windows open, especially when watching KZbin tutorials. I’ll keep KZbin on the external monitor and “watch” while I follow the steps on the computer display. With regard to specs, I know I want the Pro Chip 14/20 and 1TB SSD. RAM? Apple really screwed us this year with options. My 2019 had 32GB, and I would have chosen 32 or 36GB again. However, our options are now only 24GB or 48GB unless you go with the M4 Max base chip. This is a bit overkill for photo editing in my opinion and more expensive and will use the battery more quickly (not to mention heat if I go 14”). So, for RAM, I’m personally going for 48GB. Adobe, Capture One, etc. use up a large amount of RAM and I like to keep several things open, so I want a snappy response time without the system writing back and forth to the SSD to make space (known as “swap”). Also, I want the headroom in case I start doing some video editing. I hope this helps. Still haven’t decided and it’s been a month! 😔

The 14” MacBook Pro doesn’t perform as well as the 16” due to thermal throttling. So, if you’re going for the 14”, choose it with the Pro chip, and if you need the performance of the Max chip, the 16” is the better choice.

Just placed an order for a 16inch M4 Max with 64GB or mem, 2TB ssd, and the nano texture display. The purpose of this machine will be to for everyday tasks (conference calls, e-learning/dev work, photo editing, multi tasking, and AAA gaming using Crossover). I have a mid 2012 mbp that a family member is still using where I used OCLP to run Sequoia and it does it so effortlessly without issue. That machine was my primary machine for the 5 years I used it before it was put on a shelf. Fast forward and when the calendar switchers over to 2025 that will be over 13 years of value. I'm hoping I get just as much time & value out of this new M4 machine.

I have however restarted my iOS development learning after shelving it for a decade and so far I’ve not had any performance issues as my projects are pretty simple still so I’m not feeling the need to update but a little bit more screen would be nice. I don't do video editing of any kind; I just use if for Photoshop and Lightroom and other plugins that I use. I've never looked back to a Windows machine and quite frankly, I think I will never go back. My previous machines were also MBP's, but running on the Intel architecture. When Apple created the M1 chip, that was a game changer. Everyone else is playing catch-up. The M chip will just continue to improve by the way things are moving forward. Unless my machine breaks down, I really don't have a reason to upgrade. Would I love to have an M4, of course! Who wouldn't? However, financially that isn't feasible at this moment. I cannot technically express the differences but here is what I noticed. The 14 MBP M3 was very capable, snappy and easy to tote around- I was very pleased with it. The 16 MBP Pro felt like a generational improvement but certainly not worth the upgrade cost if my kiddo was not in need. Out of curiosity I when out and bought an open box 16 MBP M4 Max (16 Core CPU/ 40 Core GPU) for only $3,274 USD and holly cow is it much faster and smoother in every kind of way... everything is effortless. I know the 16/40 version has faster memory than the other models but it just feels like Apple put better parts under the hood and is not sharing all the details.

Great video Oliur, you've got me thinking! I'm currently using an M1 Pro 1TB 14inch mainly for video editing (4k s-log footage to projects as long as 35min), and moderate photo. It's been an incredible experience and allowed me to produce more videos, increase the quality of my production and a great media experience. The only reason I'd be tempted to upgrade now is for more RAM (currently at 16gb,) more storage and better battery. I travel a lot and it's frustrating have to edit off an external drive given the file sizes I work with. The RAM fills up quite quickly when I have all my editing tools, source tabs etc open. As a business machine the upgrade would be valuable, I'm considering an M4 Max with at least 24GB of Ram and 4TB.

Still using an M1 Max for music production with Logic and graphic design with the Adobe suite. I make quite maximalist EDM with hundreds of tracks and heavy processing, and I’ve yet to find the limit of the chip. In Illustrator there are some several second waits when dealing with raster effects in large scale print projects, so I could see myself benefiting from the ludicrous single core speed of the M4, but at the same time, I can just lower the resolution temporarily and continue on my merry way. The thing is that for me, “is it time to upgrade” is kinda nonsensical because for the work I do and the work most people do, if the chip is fast enough for all intents and purposes, that’s not something that will change regardless of what new chips come out. Like you said, I think the demographic of people that *need* the M4 Max is a limited subset of 3D artists or data science professionals that profit from their work. For me, I won’t be upgrading until my M1 Max is no longer supported, and I think I speak for a lot of others here too.

I currently still rock with my MacBook Air M1. I use it mainly for my student life and it’s been the biggest investment I have ever made. Though, besides university, I am starting to learn about photography and what I have been able to do with my Mac is surprisingly amazing considering the non pro capabilities. Though I would like to get an M4 MacBook Pro since editing big video projects on my M1 Air makes it swear a little bit.

Great video as always! Believe it or not I'm still using a 2019 16" MacBook Pro (i9, 32GB, 5500M 4GB) as my main machine. It sure isn't near as fast or efficient as the new models, but I'm using it mainly for my software engineering degree (VS Code, IntelliJ) and photo editing as a hobby (LrC, Ps) and I feel like i still have a good enough machine for some more years (although it's also hard to ignore that SD card slot and ProMotion displays on the new models 😂)

At the moment the only thing that would be a large enough difference for me to upgrade from the M1 Max would be for a new tandem OLED display like they have on the iPads. It would be an instant purchase

I'm a programmer and I have an M1 Max, but that M4 Pro is sooo tempting! 🔥 Because the CPU performance is almost 2x as the M1 Max, but the GPU performance is not really better. Of course, M4 Max would be ideal, but it's too expensive for me right now.

If you're on a desktop setting and your external devices keep unmounting then something is wrong with your set-up. I've used external SSDs for boot devices and extra storage, for many years, and they've been reliably connected on my Macs. That's why *I find it odd you paid so much for 4TB internal storage for a device that spends 90% of its time on your desk.*

remember, that satechi is changeable, your internal ssd is kaput once it's lifespan is consumed ... also, 150 for matte display is crazy ... it should just be an option not an extra the device is already way too expensive lol

How does the M4 Max 14” MacBook Pro performance compare to its 16” counterpart?
@zoltanzana
@zoltanzana 23 күн бұрын
The 14” MacBook Pro doesn’t perform as well as the 16” due to thermal throttling. So, if you’re going for the 14”, choose it with the Pro chip, and if you need the performance of the Max chip, the 16” is the better choice.

The M1 series is still absolutely incredible though. Should I have opted to get the M1 series when it launched, I’d still be rocking with it today. The only reason I got 4 terabytes of storage is because I actually have a home server with many many terabytes of storage and have become accustomed to never running out of space. But I really appreciate the final thing you said. Yeah, I have never really been one to need the top of the line (M Max chips) but, then again, I also need a little more than average joe. It’s great man!

Hello, So i have a Base M1 Pro 14' Macbook Pro (256gb,16gb). I've had it since launch, and I mostly use it for homework and other homework related programs. I am pursuing a bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, and i often have to use Circuit simulators or Coding software and so far everything works great without a hitch. I did however decide to upgrade to the M4 Pro with 1TB storage and 24GB since i often run out of RAM (I use 2-3 displays usually for my desk setup and coding apps eat RAM idk why). I also got that Nano-texture display so hopefully it all works for me.
