The M19 Multiple Gun Motor Carriage seen in the first part of the clip was a SPAAG based on the M24 Chaffee light tank chassis and armed with twin 40mm Bofors guns. While manufactured during WWII, it was too late to see combat in that conflict but was used during the Korean War as seen here, mainly against targets on the ground. At 0:23 two spare Bofors barrels can be seen on the hull ahead of the turret indicating it is an M19A1 variant.
The vehicle is joined by an M26 Pershing with its 90mm main gun and .50 cal machine gun as well as an M4A3E8 Sherman.

My neighbor (RIP) talked about doing this with an M16 Quad 50 Halftrack when he was in Korea in the summer of 50. He was in Pusan and said "we had predesignated spots to go to. If the NK soldiers were hot in an area, we would drive the halftrack to that point, backing in, and dump the ammo cans and hurry out. If we stayed in that spot past a min, we would get hit by mortars. There mortar fire was very accurate. If they didn't get you on the first round, they'd get you on the second one. So, it was important to be able to shoot and scoot quickly."

You are right.They needed about 15 or 20 of them at Chosin but they only had a few. Then they had an ammunition shortage..

My Father was at Chosin and his feet and toes were really messed up. He never let his feet hold him back at all. He served three tours in Viet Nam and brought home brain cancer from agent orange. He passed many years ago while I was still in school.

Proto-Duster! T-26? M-46? And Easy Eighth! All in action! Even the driver got screen time with his periscope action; i thought tank periscopes were stationary.

You can see the gunsmoke inside the turret after that big cannon goes off. Has to be a toxic chamber filled with carcinogenic gases inside that tank. Not to mention the acoustic concussion from the blast wave bouncing off that cliff wall so close. Human factors be damned, soldiers are expendable in all ways, even if not immediately KIA.

Interesting. They drive in reverse to the firing point, so they can drive the hell out of there faster (forwards) when the fire mission ends or the counterfire starts.

Why does the tank orient backwards for firing?
@obsidianjane4413
@obsidianjane4413 Ай бұрын
The road is probably too narrow to turn around on or they didn't want to bother with it, or its faster to drive away forward than to back down the hill if they come under fire. The biggest threat to them is artillery and HEAT rockets, and for them orientation doesn't matter, in fact the engine provides more protection than the front armor.

@@obsidianjane4413 Forward is much faster than reverse, especially if you're stuck in a T-72 :-) Artillery might have been an issue there but can't envision any HEAT trouble - they were shooting at things many hundreds of yards away minimum. 1950s man portable HEAT was a 200 yard sort of thing.

@@obsidianjane4413 On a narrow hillside dirt road. Turning around you could risk sliding into a ditch or gulley. Especially a tank since the treads are actually grinding up the very path they are on. Especially if the soil is wet!

@@obsidianjane4413they mostly had ww2 era field guns, like the 76mm zis3. I doubt they had many HEAT launchers, as they would have to rely on captured bazookas.
