Man I LOVE the gear whine. I remember when I was in the single digits of my youth, I'd fall asleep to this sound. 8 years old, and this was my nap music. Good times.

This is probably the best M22 sound-bite I've heard, upshift and downshift. Good job.

Sounds great! Wish I could hear the whine of my Rockcrusher over the exhaust in my Nova.
@glennmanchester15684 жыл бұрын
So quiet the exhaust down I've always loved the sound of the q jet over the exhaust anyway and a quiet or quieter exhaust does not make that much of a performance difference not anything negligable and you could always put cutouts anyway if you really wanna go loud right but for around town cruising go stealth mode it makes it more of a sleeper anyway other than the little shaking from the cam and if they listen to it really close then they know but at a light. Some clown in a rustang pulls up has no clue what he's in for lmao used to do it all the time in several different cars one was a nova sort of a 78 ventura w a 455 pontiac boneyard 200 dollar motor from an old Grand Prix that all you really heard from her was that 800 cfm q jet screaming in the night well that's what we called it anyway lol and there wasn't near a rustang or a small block powered camaro that stood half a chance .. all I kept hearing was wtf .. ?

Shivolays have the best tranny whine. I also had a 64 Burick that sounded great. Have you ever heard a good tranny whine from a Ford or Chrysler? No, they sound horrible compared to Shivolays.
@klintregan48889 жыл бұрын
From one gearhead to another, well-done video! I wanted this same sound so bad nine years ago, I converted my 1970 C10 over to a four speed setup and had a freshly rebuilt Muncie M20 bored out to accept a 1" diameter shaft and upgraded to what I no know is an aftermarket M22 gear cluster set. The aftermarket M22 gear sets do NOT have this same sound as yours! To get the exact gear harmonics heard in your video, you have to be running a FACTORY ORIGINAL M22 gear set. Very expensive lesson on my part. :-( I plan on getting mine re-done again someday to achieve this exact sound. Just letting you know all this, in case you would ever have yours completely gone through. Thanks!

I had a 1965 Pontiac Parisienne Custom Sport fastback, which I bought in '68. It had a 327 cu. in. with a 4 barrel & a Muncie 4 speed. It also had the Pontiac tach in the upper corner beside the speedo. At the time I didn't know about the M2 transmission but I do remember that the trans did wine which I though was unusual. Could that have been one of the Rock crushers ? Bill
@JBzdel7 жыл бұрын
Bill Dallner, someone could have transplanted it!
@billdallner70487 жыл бұрын
No, that car had not been touched, it was stone stock from the factory. Bought it from a major dealer in Kitchener, not a private deal. Loved that car.
@JBzdel7 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately that model vehicle and engine combo would not be considered for a Factory installed M22.

OK. thanks for the info, I wasn't sure. Bill

My father bought a brand new 65 Parisienne convertible. Only a 283 powerglide, one day I'll build a tribute 409 stick shift car, I have three clone 409s now, and I love it!!!
@Shamilt35 жыл бұрын
Ive never got a firm answer, what makes it whine like this? Its not synchros is it the tooth set on the gears? I can remember as a kid riding in cars that whined like this.
@JBzdel5 жыл бұрын
The M22 and only a "real" M22 has a shallower gear cut angle in gears 1-2-3. This is for more strength and the tradeoff is more noise but a beautiful nostalgic one at that!
@Shamilt35 жыл бұрын

Anyone know where I can find a M22 fairly cheap? Should I look at junkyards?
@JBzdel7 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I don't think you'll find any in a junkyard.....it's been 4-1/2 decades since they were produced by GM!

Sounds epic. But why does your brake light keep coming on?
@JBzdel4 жыл бұрын
The car sat for years and the Master cylinder needed to be bled.
@shaungapinski1976 жыл бұрын
What’s with the mph light was that supposed to be a shift light for that car ??
@JBzdel6 жыл бұрын
Shaun, that's the brake light silly! Car had been sitting for 5 years before I took it for a quick spin around the block!

+John Bzdel Thanks, man. Good luck on your build. I also noticed the rectangle between the speedo and the tach. Was this an auto car or did they all have that?
@JBzdel8 жыл бұрын
You're welcome. This is a Factory 4 speed car so that's how it is!
@HelluvaMechE8 жыл бұрын
+John Bzdel Way cool. I'm down in GA and have the same M22 config, but mine was originally an auto car. I still have a bezel on my column that actuates the backup lights!
@Thinker6697 жыл бұрын
I thought it was a shift light.

i plan on doing this same swap for my 77 camaro. can you give me some advice for the swap ? i appreciate it
@JBzdel8 жыл бұрын
The M22 is a direct swap out....you may have a different fine spline input shaft vs the coarse spline which would mean that you'd have to swap out the clutch disc.
@jmorales4518 жыл бұрын
Cool thanks. What about installing the pedal assembly ?

I have 1978 z28 with a Borg Warner T10 4 and I get the same gear whine sound. it's awesome I love it. seeing your guages reminds me a lot of my z28.
@rorilovita81507 жыл бұрын
Yeah, my 79 z28 with the super t 10 has a similar sound. It is a very strong tranny. Had to order it special when I bought it almost 40 years ago. All the cars on the lot had automatics. It increases the value of the car today.

That m 22 still needs bearings ,and clean that ragged ass weak ,no cammed piece of shit. Finally learn how to drive that sled. Where's the rpms,???
@JBzdel5 жыл бұрын
Obviously you are clueless with M22s....absolutely nothing wrong with the bearings and getting on it drowns out the M22, that's the whole idea of a gentle cruise but what do you know besides nothing lol....
@darrrenbetker42668 жыл бұрын
dont get me wring i appreatiate the idea of strength but regardless i still wouldnt want to hear that all day long. like i said ....annoying! !!

My teenage age daughters were a but rough on the car before it sat in hibernation for 14 years and just got running again. When I first put the M22 in the car back in 1990 it was a cherry!
