No way I would EVER buy a new PC for over €500 (taxes included) with that amount of ssd and ram, let alone over €1250 (taxes included, in Europe) for such a device. “THEY FIXED IT” Proceeds to show us that it’s still slower than the model from 2 generations/4 years ago. How is this acceptable when most current SSD in other comparable products is like 2-3x the speed?
@barkmonster
@barkmonster 8 ай бұрын
They should just ditch soldered SSDs and use standard off the shelf NVMe. It’s much faster and when you can get 2TB NVMe with 7000MB/s read speeds for what Apple charge for an extra 256GB, it’s even more of a rip off. I’m glad there’s an off the shelf config with 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM now though because if places like Amazon or Ebuyer discount M3s the way they did with M2 and M1 systems, it could be insignificantly more than the 512/8 configs. I just found out my main DAW, Pro Tools, now supports using E-cores too so the price and performance difference between a used 14” M1 Pro with 6P/2E CPU and 14 core GPU and a new M3 with 16GB is going to be much smaller now.

8:20 Wait did I hear that right? A single 128GB NAND is more expensive than a single 256GB NAND? So 2x128GB is more expensive than 2x256GB? So instead of giving users 512GB as the base which would solve the speed issue and give more capacity, Apple decided to spend more money on worse components just to keep their aggressive pricing ladder the same?!

If 128GB chips are truly more expensive than 256GB chips, what I'm hearing is that 512GB should be the base configuration. Apple is intentionally spending more money to make their laptop worse. Thanks Apple 👍. Edit: This is wrong. It is cheaper to use 2 * 128GB than 1 * 256GB. Max was mistaken about the prices in the video. Moreover, 512GB is the configuration that makes no sense cost-wise. Details in the replies. At $1,100 it is insulting that 1 TB isn't the base config anyway.

@rightwingsafetysquad9872 8 ай бұрын
@johnnyvvlog Yea, either Max is really wrong about chip prices or Apple is acting maliciously. At first both seemed equally likely. Unfortunately Alibaba seems to be down right now. I'm not having luck finding high speed flash chips on Mouser or Aliexpress, only eMMC. But what I've found is that 64GB is nearly free (less than $5), 128GB is about $17, 256GB is about $39, and 512GB is $42. Surely Apple buying massive volumes can get them cheaper; and they're not buying these chips, they're buying better ones, but it seems reasonable that the relative prices would scale fairly linearly. So, 2 * 128GB is probably slightly cheaper for Apple than 1 * 256. Apple isn't screwing customers; they might not even care that they're helping customers. They're just saving themselves some money. Moreover, 512GB shouldn't even be an option; it should jump straight to 1TB.

People dont realize.... doesnt really matter the amount of "NAND Flash Packages" what matters is the number of dies inside each package. you can easily find regular Gen4 SSD with 1 or 2 NAND Packages with higher performance then double sided SSDs with 8 packages... why? because you can freaking stack NAND Flash dies on top of each other.... What really matters is the NAND FLash die model that Apple is packing. If i remember correctly last generations they were using Kioxia BiCS family, i dont know yet which dies are they using right now.

The AP0256Z label in AmorphusDiskMark just means that it's the same controller chip configured to 256GB, or that's just the model Apple wants the controller to report to the OS anyway. Whether it's a single NAND package or multiple generally isn't considered for SSD model numbering. We learned this a few years ago when Adata and WD were swapping parts around on SSDs while retaining model numbers.

If you’re going for that hub, just make sure it’s powered! That many ports will draw a lot of power and possibly even damage one of your (2) precious USB-C ports. There is only so much juice you can pull from a laptop.

Should I get the 8/256 m2 or m3? After back to uni discounts the m3 is 125usd more expensive than the m2. Is it worth spending the extra money?
@cyberking2712
@cyberking2712 8 ай бұрын
I would say it is worth it. But will you utilise the extra power? Probably not, depending on what you use your system for. From what I can tell from reviews, base M1 does most things instantly. M1 16GB does most other things instantly. Power users should consider jumping all the way up to M3 Pro MacBook Pro to have enough power to do intensive tasks seamlessly. Go with one of the M1 models (refurbished) if you're worried about money and don't mind the slightly older design. Though I'm going with a 16GB M3 Air since I can afford it and want the most reliable machine possible for non-power users.

I called it. In MaxTech’s last video on the MBA, I said to wait for them to come out and to see what Apple does with the NAND. Remember the M2 Pro MBP’s had a single NAND on its base model while the M3 Pro MBP’s went back to two. I said two years ago when Apple started using a single NAND that it was likely due to supply chain problems coming out of the pandemic that forced Apple to go to single chips. Remember Apple uses hundreds of millions of chips a year, mostly in its iPhones. The only models that have ever had single NANDs were the M2 family of chips. It just seems like a long time because the M2 MBA came out nearly two years ago. The M1 and M3 family have all used at least two.

Its easy to see when a machine is the way to go. About the thermal issues, its the price to pay for a thin and fan less machine. Intensive tasks was never the goal of Air and iMac line besides it sometimes has pretty fast chips. The only issue here is about the RAM. I should buy it with 16 Gb

They could have used the new technology of the fanless blowers: the flat ultrasound blowers.. and made the screen mechanism 360* for the tablet mode.. and apple pencil support... and multi OS option (iPadOS+MacOS) and 512/16GB for the base config. Those features would have justified the price

How about pressuring them not to have non-replaceable 5-year-rated SSDs soldered to the board and then have swap chew through the TBW because their RAM prices are from 1995? Or maybe not to use chips that short the SSDs to ground, frying them with absolutely no chance of repair? I just bought an M3 Macbook Pro and am absolutely gutted. I have Macbook Pros that have lasted me 15 years because I can swap out the short-life parts. Finding out that I've invested 3 grand in a computer that is basically guaranteed to die in 5 years is infuriating.

Did I get that right? A single 128 flash chip costs more than a single 256, and there are always two of them? So, when upgrading from the 256 GB base model to 512 GB, Apple is charging 200$ more to sell us the cheaper computer?
@MaxTechOfficial

Yes, precisely. Welcome to marketing lol. It’s just a unique situation where 256GB chips are less expensive because the storage companies are making more of them. Higher mass production = lower prices. 128GB chips aren’t as common anymore.
