14" is really the sweet spot/ largest I'd wanna travel with all the time. I owned an m2 air 8/512 for about 6 months before upgrading to the 18/512gb m3pro. I loved the size ad weight of the air and the biggest difference with the pro would be the overall weight. I do appreciate all of the other upgrades that come with the pro though.. especially the extra ports.. really everything on the right.. That extra usbC port really does come in handy; and active cooling. I like me a good display as much as the next tech guy but I honestly don't notice much of a difference between the two in this dept.. and I do a decent amount of photo editing and media consumption with my laptops. There's very little difference unless you've got them side by side and pay more attention to contrast and dimming zones than the actual content. Yes the MBP has better blacks but I really didn't see much beyond that and I was looking close when I still had both machines in front of me. 120hz is nice as well but I really don't find it as noticeable as I do on an iphone with pro-motion.

My first thoughts were that the MBP feels heavier and chunkier, the trackpad much smaller, so side-by-side, I wasn't sure I was making the right choice. But the MBP has 18GB memory vs the Air's 8GB (both have 512SSDs), and I noticed the difference immediately when running Windows 11 in Parallels (the only speed issue I ever had). This was the main deciding factor, though the extra ports and the fact it fits into my backpack more easily definitely helped with the decision. Both are great, for sure.

I use base model M1 air. 8GB of RAM is merely fine for an average user… for now. It’s definitely not future proof. 6GB out of 8GB is pretty much always occupied with only a few apps open. If you do anything heavy that requires lots of RAM, or have many apps open in the background for example (multitasking), the memory swap significantly increases which means it’ll decrease the SSD’s lifespan faster. When the SSD dies, the laptop dies too. It is absurd to sell an 8GB RAM laptop as a base model in 2024, it should at least be 16GB. What can I say? Greedy Apple.

When the M3 MBP came out, I considered it to just exist as a stepping-stone to make people get the M3 Pro MBP. But now I have to say that it's placed really well in Apple's product lineup. Same goes for the MBAs: Want something thin, they're for you. Nevertheless, I wouldn't get any of those two machines. Instead, I'd go for a refurbished M1 Pro or M2 Pro MBP 14", and I'd probably get more RAM and/or storage for the same money, and probably better performance most of the time as well.

When Apple introduces new machines, how about comparing them to older chipsets instead. How many people are really upgrading from an M2 to a M3 Air, or even M1 to M2 Air. How about we see benchmarks and performaces side by side from an M1 Air to an M3 Air? Or maybe whatever the last Intel Air was with the same OS on both machines.

I'm stuck between three options as a student: -The 15" M2 Air with 1TB and 16GB RAM for $1,499 which is $400 off original price at Best Buy -15" Air M3 with 16GB RAM and only 512GB storage for $1,599 -13" Air M3 with 24GB RAM and 512 GB Storage for $1,579

Either of those m3 airs and then you can add external storage. The m3 is faster for single core than the m2, it is a better buy to last longer.
@dccd32378 ай бұрын
24GB RAM seems overkill for almost anyone in any Air model, right? Seems that perhaps for the Pro models if doing heavy modeling or other super-intensive projects at the same time, but I doubt any programs or apps go that far.

15" Air M3 with 16GB RAM is the best choice. I had14' mbp and changed it to 16 mpb because display is too small. 15' display is way better than 13', m3 is more powerful, and you always can buy more external storage so it is not a problem.

Why is the MacBook Air still a product label? Call it MacBook. The banding scheme was MacBook and MacBook Pro. The air was introduced as an extreme portable MacBook and you paid a premium for it. If there’s no cheaper bulkier option that could fit into a place of “MacBook” then just drop the air and call it MacBook like it always used to be.

Question: How loud/quiet IS that fan on the Pro? I do voiceover recording and I need the machine to be quiet. I've been using a MacBook Air 2014, which DOES have the fan (and the far slower chipset), but the fan rarely switched on for recording, so I'm guessing the M3 chip could sleepwalk its way through recording without needing the fan. For post-processing, which includes cpu/graphics-intensive processing, I wouldn't care about noise. So would the Pro be the option where recording booth silence is an issue? I had really been settling on the fanless machine for that guaranteed silence, but you've made me reconsider.
@TheAirnium7 ай бұрын
The fan is extremely quiet on the Pro. I have it and it rarely turns on an I do graphic design with many projects open at the same time. I also have 24gb of ram on my machine. When the fan has kicked on it has been so low It has been negligible.
@alan2a1l7 ай бұрын
@@TheAirnium Thanks! I appreciate the info! Good to know. I hope not to have the issue, as recording supposedly requires very little processing power, it's post-processing that is processing intensive and that is when I'm NOT recording, so the fan shouldn't be an issue. But really good to know it's that quiet. Thanks again!

Hi Max, I may have missed this, but in the case that I have not, I would find it very valuable if you could incorporate work software into these videos, in the context that, different professional softwares require different demands from a computer system, so determining the suitable product is a bit ambiguous, in the context of being unsure what may be considered complex tasks have higher demands on systems, and visa versa.
