Do you think the M4 Mac mini could be Apple's best-ever Mac?

It's an improvement. Nothing special. Long.....LONG..... overdue and people are acting like Apple walked on water haha. IN 2024....what they reduced in Length and Width, they added in Height, and now it's "chuncky". The base model has 256gb when it should have 512gb and it SHOULD have been as small as an Apple TV. Now, that would be indicative that Apple can still "innovate". They just fixed the flaws in their previous designs, but they didn't think one step further. Why does this thing need a fan if the M4 chip is so power efficient and barely heats up? Sure, it's DECENT bang-for-buck. But an Intel Nuc is smaller, cheaper, and more bang-for-buck

All depends on one’s use case I think? I’m rocking a late 2012 MBP (A1278 2.9Ghz i7) I bought earlier this year for $130 CAD, and very easily updated to Sonoma via OCLP; it’s sole application is running software for my audio/video systems (REW and miniDSP Device Console). It came already upgraded with 16GB RAM and 1 TB SSD - the calibrated mike, Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter and active USB extension cable required for the audio application cost more than the laptop. My daily driver for everyday use - such as reading and commenting on YT - is an iPad, and home theatre runs an ATV 4K. I also have a pair of mid 2012 Minis for print and music servers, and would be hard pressed to find a need for an new shiny grey box, regardless of the outrageous performance value it might offer.

Yep definitely! I want to upgrade my aging 2018 Mac Mini, so interested in the M4 Pro model for maximum performance. I'll wait for your review first though (no pressure...). Oh and you forgot removing the two USB A ports and not adding an SD card slot. - Who knows, maybe it's inside?

I am still rocking my M1 Mac mini editing about ten 4-K videos a week plus coding, it is so smooth (in 2024) that I simply do not see the need of upgrading it as of now. These machines are simply incredible to say the least.

Every Apple product I have bought was for the long haul! 3 iPhones for 7 years each, 6 Mac's over 20 years for 5-6 years each. So, my M1 Mac Mini will be my Main hauler until it is discontinued!

That’s a great choice! A storage upgrade would be +33% of the cost which I think definitely lowers the cost advantage of the Mac mini. I’m thinking of doing the same

The M2 Mac Mini (base model) has been insanely good for video editing and over all content production. Now that the M4 is out the used price of the M2 will be really REALLY good especially since it was already really cheap and its pretty much an AI PC with Apple Intelligence. I'll 100% be keeping my Mac Mini M2 for a long time.

I upgraded from my imac intels to an studio m2 last year with a studio display . Incredible. I will definitely go for the m4 mini. Will be more than enough fir what i do. Some 3d modeling for a 3D printer, music notation software fir my drumming.

I upgraded the RAM when I purchased my M1 Mini 4 years ago from 8 GB to 16 GB and I’m very glad I did. I’m gonna wait to pull the trigger on this new M4 until a good 3rd party M4 Mini specific port is out on the market…would still like to have a few USB A ports. I’m sure Satechi is already working on it. When I upgrade I’ll go with the M4 Pro…price jumps a bit, but with 3 Thunderbolt 5 ports and 24 GB RAM, 512 SSD standard, I’m thinking it’s worth it for future proofing. And by the way I just liked and subscribed…thanks for the great content.

Very tempting. I love that it’s possible to add 10GBe card. This little add-on saves approximately $200-$250 for external USB-C to rj45 adapter. In terms of raw power. This thing is a beast. As for limited storage. I guess some people can use their already purchased external hard drives or NAS boxes.

I've ordered a base M4 mini to replace my M1 mini. I use the rear external speaker socket on the M1 and wasn't too pleased with the move to the front. I've now got a USB-C audio adapter waiting for the M4 so I can use that as a rear speaker connector instead. Not ideal, but better than a cable permanently sticking out of the front. In return we do get the 2 front-mounted USB sockets at last which will replace the untidy USB hub I've been using on the M1

I am amazed how Apple have packed so much power and tech into a small device. This little powerhouse is not much bigger than an Apple TV box. You could fit this little magic box to the back of your wall-mounted TV, and suddenly your lounge becomes your office. I am happy with my iPad and Mac Book Pro set-up, however, when it comes to upgrading I may go down the Mac Mini route and strap it onto the back of my lounge TV.

Thanks for the video. An attractive computer, particularly the Pro version. Unfortunately, their SSD storage prices are ludicrous. £2,400 for 8TB. Dear god... how much are they selling bridges for? 😄 Forget it. Just get a decent external drive. G-Drives are fine - two or three hundred buckeroos for 6-8TB. It may or may not be as well integrated but, come on, it's basically, one tenth of the price. Spend the money saved on the more powerful processor and the fully expanded memory... and still have enough cash left to buy a second hand car. 😉 Cheers!

Although I still use my venerable M1 MacBook Pro which has lasted almost 4 years now and is still an absolute revelation of a device for me, I will for sure be making a move back to the Mac Mini once it runs its course. This thing can literally be put in a backpack and be taken anywhere. Really plug and play in a way that the previous Mini was not quite in the ballpark of doing. All that power in that little box and the price, I mean it's such a fantastic value. Highlights the divide in price between a base M4 Mini and a base M4 MBP being really all in that display.

I sold my 2020 intel MBP and I’m ordering the base model Mac mini M4. I don’t need it to travel as I have my iPad for mobile and it’s time to move to the M processor. About to put in my preorder today. I already have a 34” and 35” curved screen, trackpad and Apple keyboard. Sold the MBP for $370 and with education pricing, the Mini will be $499 + taxes. I have an m1 mac mini 8gb memory and I’m really happy with it. I have an m1 pro 16gb macbook but prefer the m1 mini for some reason. Guess i just love how desktops are there ready and working. Always ready. In the future, I’ll sell my macbook pro and maybe buy a macbook air 15inch and get the m4 pro mac mini. I have a studio display which definitely helps. Let’s see. I bought my M2 Pro mini almost one year ago, so I definitely won't be upgrading. I do feel like a little bit of a chump for buying the last mac before the memory upgrade, so the base model now has the same that I paid double for, but I don't regret it. This is the best computer I've ever had, and I'm still new to the mac game, so I think I actually prefer the old design to this new one. (Also, I turn off my computer every night. It's not good for it's health to leave it in sleep forever.)

@@addsfour3499 Ok, first of all USB-IF (an organization) has been notoriously inconsistent with naming things. So, USB-C is a type of connector. Thunderbolt is an interface, or perhaps you could say loosely, it's the "set of rules or standard" so that computer peripherals can communicate with each other. So we can say: A monitor (with DisplayPort connector) can communicate with the mac mini (with USB-C connector) using DisplayPort alternate mode. We could also say: A printer (with USB-B connector) can communicate with the mac mini (with USB-C connector) using AirPrint or some other legacy interfaces I have no idea what. We could also say: An external SSD/HDD (with USB-C connector) can communicate with the mac mini (with USB-C connector) using Thunderbolt. Both terms are usually used interchangeably but, technically you can have USB-C connector but no Thunderbolt and only USB 3.1 interface for example. ==== If you look up USB-C pin out guide on Google, you'll see what are each pin can be used for. The controller chipset behind the connector is *the* one specifying what interfaces (yes, there can be more than one: DisplayPort, Power Delivery, Qualcomm's Quick Charge, USB4, etc) that the USB-C connector of the said device can use.

Ok, I’m about to eat my previous words. You and others have helped me make a change in my thinking. I have an M2 MM Pro base model. I really wanted to go with the M4 Pro but I’m going with the M4 24GB 512 GB version and here’s why., first, Best Buy is giving me $575 trade in for my M2Pro! This will save a huge amount off the $949 M4 version I’m getting. Second, the M4 is slightly to more powerful than the M2 Pro! It definitely won’t be less powerful thus I don’t feel the need to go Pro this time around. Lastly, I’m not doing anything the M4 won’t be able to handle. I still need USB -A and will have to get creative with that issue. Adapters and hubs will help there. I’m hoping Satechi will create a hub for the new MM. i mainly do word processing, photo editing which the M4 will handle easily. I’m thinking it will even do some video editing as well having 24GB of RAM. Since I’m not doing anything like yourself, I think this time the near base model will finally be the right fit!

Nice review. Some "reviewers" have gone wild about the on off button on the bottom, not even asking why or saying if it's actually an issue. I mostly use sleep mode akd or looks simple to reach. I love having the 3.5mm on the front. Why some manufacturs put it on the back I don't know. I'm getting an m4 mini. I've always been temped by a mini but usually gone for a cheaper mini Windows computer and have come to regret it with driver and other issues.

I plan on getting the new Mac Mini. I have a M1 iMac. I plan to use it as a trade in for the Mini. This new Mini has all the ports I need. It comes with the base memory I find the most useful. I am getting the 512Gb storage. I don’t need more than that since I am now the proud owner/user of a personal NAS. I have 8TB of storage on it and am about to add another 8TB to it.

If you need a monitor check out the BenQ PD range. Currently I have both a 2k and a 4k model and they are both 100% sRGB compliant. Although the 4k monitor May only be 99% sRGB compliant.

Basically I’m not getting one because my 2019 Intel iMac 27” 8 core i9 64GB with 2TB SSD plus 6TB external hard drives still works like new and will hopefully fulfil my needs for at least another five years. By which time there will be even faster, better, stronger, newer all singing and dancing things available which will make the M4 Mini seem prehistoric. That’s the way evolution and consumerism works.

The lack of usb-a ports is a plus in my books. I remember when everyone praised usb-c. Why? Because it was said to be better and the ultimate usb port. Well, its been years and usb-a devices are still being manufactured. Fine. They’re still compatible via a dongle. But that dongle is the incentive right there to ditch that legacy. If you say I’m wrong then that’s fine. But you were with everyone when they were raving and praising usb-c so make up your mind. The two existing simultaneously does not make for a better world or give more choice. It gives less choice and worsens the situation because now you have a higher chance of not having a compatible cable whereas 10 years ago you would’ve been fine. Its worse unless we get rid of usb-a. Otherwise, admit that usb-c isn’t great. Pick one.

Mini M4 Pro ordered base unified/base ssd. I did however up the core count. I figured I can always tack on a TB4/5 external ssd and 2.5G usb-c Ethernet if need be, later on. Replacing a 2014 i5 mini, so a monstrous upgrade. I’ve had the M4 iPad Pro since pre-order, but this will replace my laptop pc that I’m tired of. Love your content; always seek out new ones from you. I am updating from the iMac 5K 27” 2017 to the Mac mini M4 24 unified memory and 1TB storage. I hope I can use my iMac as additional storage and display for the time being due to being on a budget and hope to find more info on how to set this up. I am a hobby photographer and was disappointed that the iMac only comes as a 24”.

I'm definitely interested in this new Mac Mini. It might need some time to get used to a taller mini PC, but the price definitely drew my interest. I could buy an M4 Mac Mini 16/512 and a NexDock or UPERFECT lapdock, and they're still almost half the price of what I'd pay for the M4 MacBook Pro 14 with the same 16/512 trim.

The new M4 Mac Mini a game changer. I am going for the same M4 Pro Mac Mini spec as yourself, plus 10Gbit/s ethernet to future proof it for NAS storage. My primary uses will be running Windows 11 and Linux VMs, so maximising CPU cores and RAM is necessary, run Logic Pro and Ableton, gaming, and some light coding. This currently chews up 1.5 TB of storage on my M2 MacBook Pro 13-inch, hence 2 TB SSD is my minimum requirement. I will trade in my M2 MacBook Pro to reduce the cost, as its lack of touch display and intrinsic stylus support means it can never be my mobile computing device.

I was all set to buy a refurbished M3 Pro MacBook Pro as a replacement for my M1 Mac Mini with 16gb unified memory. Now I’m getting the M4 Pro Mac Mini with 12 core cpu and 48gb unified memory. Likely also getting 512gb ssd.

I’m on the final gen intel iMac 27 with a multi monitor setup. It was top spec when I purchased it and has been great for digital art and photography but starting to get occasional issues….. been waiting a while for a larger version of the current iMacs but starting to think the New M4 Pro Mini is the answer.

I ordered two! Got one for lugging around / living room setup and a second one with M4 Pro and 48GB RAM. I have a weird feeling that the 48GB RAM versions are going to have higher memory bandwidth than the systems equipped with 64GB RAM. It would be awesome to do possibly do some performance comparisions for everyone with you @Mark.

Mark, great review. I want to say that I like the M4 Mac mini. The design is pretty good and reminiscent of the Mac Studio. Having said that, I will be keeping my M2 Pro. My setup consists of a 4TB HD, Super Drive CD/DVD, and 2 matching hubs that provide additional SSD plus additional ports and SD card reader ports 2 standard size and 2 mini size. Because my Color laser printer is easier to use via a USB -A port, I need those ports. The new Mac Mini is in my opinion too limiting. Furthermore the M2 Pro has all I need to run Apple intelligence plus for my limited needs it is still a very powerful Mac. So, while I like the M4 MM, it offers no compelling reason for me to upgrade. I would actually lose expansion capability at least until solutions are created. Even then the M2 Pro has way more power than I need or would use.

I'm running a maxed-out 2018 Intel Mini, and it's working great. If I still had a job, I'd consider upgrading right now, even though my 2018 Mini is running just fine, everything works without an issue, and I use it quite a bit. The video I work on every week is from an GoPro 7, so luckily having an outdated GoPro keeps my requirements down compared to state-of-the-art video requirements. I'm also working on two 30" Apple Cinema Displays, which are around twenty years old. Although they require two or three adapters, they work great. I also have six external drives. As long as everything keeps working fine until I find a new job, I can put off a new Mini. But I want one. Six years is pretty good for my current Mini, and I'll bet I could get two more years, minimum, before I really had to upgrade. Maybe longer? I had a PowerComputing clone back in the day that went nine years as my main machine, although I had upgraded everything in it that could be upgraded. It was still running just fine when I let it go.

I've ordered the M4 Mac mini with 24GB memory, 1TB storage and 10 gigabit Ethernet. It's to replace an M1 Mac mini with 16GB/512GB and gigabit Ethernet. I already use an Apple Studio Display so I'll have a good mix of Thunderbolt and USB-C connections.

I bought the base model before even watching the launch video. I have a 2014 Mini which is mainly a home server. It still does fine but there issues with it running an older OS and things syncing correctly. The new Mini will take its place, but also serve as a computer so my son doesn’t have to use my MacBook for his gaming videos on KZbin. I’ll be buying a 4TB NVME and a Thunderbolt enclosure so I can sync my whole iCloud to it.

Looks like a great device. Although if your investing so much in upgrades, 🤔 then maybe its not the correct base. The one concern I have is heat dissipation may be a concern in that smaller format. Hopefully not

Mark, I’m on M1 Pro 16” and while it would be nice to have the boost, the M1 series is so good still I don’t feel the need to upgrade. Maybe M5 though, if they do more with graphics, which was an afterthought this time around. But there’s no doubt the M4 Pro on a smaller Mac Mini is incredibly compelling. Especially with Thunderbolt 5 and front ports.

I think reviewers should clarify that most people don’t need 2 Terabytes. It would be a lot cheaper to buy two external SSD hard drives, one to keep as the backup for the other one and that’s it… unless of course you edit video all the time like KZbinrs do. I have a 256 GB MacBook Air, just for reference, I haven’t come close to maxed it out.

You can use screen mirroring to extend or duplicate the display onto an ipad Pro, I do this with my M2 Macbook Air onto two ipad Pro's on either side of it's screen. It's reliable and works well. I'm unsure but I _think_ it uses bluetooth, but I could be wrong, - it may be wifi, in which case I'd guess that both ipads, and the mac, would have to be on the same network.

@@danielebenezer3507 I think you can you know, I just googled " _can you use screen mirroring on a mac mini to an ipad pro_ " and the answer was "yes" with a list of the methods, - using Airplay (mirroring), or a USB cable, why not take a look. It also answered my question, - mirroring uses wifi apparently.

No SD Card reader - add that to your list of cons. Truthfully, it's not something I will die on a hill over although I'd rather have it than not. All that said, I am very tempted to get the base M4 model. I was waiting for M4/M5 to upgrade my 16" M1 Pro MBP, however, rather than sell or trade my MacBook I think I might keep it now and buy the Mini to run alongside it.

No, that is not possible, iMacs have no video input, output only. If your iMac's logic board is broken anyway, you could consider a third-party interface board to convert it to a monitor, but you need some skills (mostly patience and strong nerves while disassembling your device).
