Apple boasted MacOS for it's stable Unix foundation but failed to optimize games for the Mac. On the other hand, Linux which is only Unix-like has better support for games even though it has a less stable kernel than MacOS (since Linux uses a monolithic kernel while MacOS uses a hybrid kernel known XNU which combines Mach microkernel and BSD4.3 monokernel, so definitely the latter wins when it comes to system stability). That's why nowadays you can game on the go on Linux with the Steam Deck. So it's Apple's fault for not making their software optimized for modern games despite having a stable OS and kernel foundation.

Linux has "better" support for games because Valve is literally doing all the work to ge the games running. Has nothing to do with Linux or the kernel other than that's the platform Valve decided to focus on. For obvious reasons, like Windows It has decent support for most graphics hardware. macOS is can run games just fine, but Apple is not going out of there way to let developers just drop the Windows versions of their games into macOS and call it a day.

If your performance drops this much when unplugged, something is wrong with your settings. I'm not saying that the alienware will be able to do this for any amount of time, but it should drop at maximum 10% ish when off the wall. Anything more than that is an error in your setup for testing.

@@Jared_Is_Near The laptop runs fully on the power supply while plugged in, and the power supply can give more wattage then the battery can. A lithium battery stores 330 watt hours per kilo at the best case scenario. I would expect about 250Wh per kg from a laptop battery. So unless you want the battery to die after 20 minutes, and when it catches on fire due to having no cooling, it has a significantly lower wattage and your hardware is running underclocked. Else you would never be able to see at least a couple hours of battery life. Depending on the battery the weight could be all over the place a 10kg lithium car battery has about 1500Wh. That can only power my desktop for 2 hours at 100%.

​@@swapnilchaudhary2944 incorrect. If you check the table you can clearly see that the alienware is hard capping its max fps at 120 when unplugged and then dips below that every once in a while. There is clearly a limiter in software, otherwise it wouldn't permanently be hitting exactly its screen refresh rate, but would rather hit something random like 139. And yes, *SOME* laptops can unlock a bit more juice when powered directly from the wall, but it's not a 3x-6x increase in power limit, not even close. These performance numbers are *WAY* too far apart from each other to be anything but a power reduced setting when on battery (like power saving vs. high performance). If you applied the same setting while the laptop was plugged into the wall, it would be hitting the same reduced performance numbers. What holds almost every modern gaming laptop back is also not the power limits, but the cooling and chips hitting 90-100°C and then being capped there, so even if the laptop was able to draw more power from the wall than it could from its own battery (which it can't btw), it would still be thermally or software limited in both cases.

That's not what it says. Windows losing half of its frames is simply reaching a lower power draw, whereas the m4 has no low power setting. Lower the max frequency plugged in in windows and you match how crappy battery powered games run

My Alienware m18 is dual booted with Linux. I am a software engineer if that helps you assume what kind of pace I'm putting the mac through. The difference in compile time on android studio is ms vs minutes on a Mac.

As every tech youtuber, the gaming comparison is unfair as always for Mac. I know the game releases are very small on Mac, but not 0 at all. Also the comparison should be fair. 1. Cyberpunk 2077 - Doesn't have Mac port(though it is announced to get released on Mac this year). 2. Black myth wukong - doesn't have mac port. 3. Minecraft - need to use ARM java verson to uplift the performance on Mac. 4. League of legends - uses slower openGL. You can turn on Metal API(Apple's currently used graphics API) and gain upto 2x performance. The cause of the low performance in the benchmarks on the macbook is the fact that Cyberpunk and Black myth wukong doesnt even have Mac port. It is being through two translation layers. (x86 -> ARM) and (DirectX - Metal) in runtime. So the performance is so low. Also other two games can be tweak to use proper hardware of Macbooks to gain nearly 2x performance. Why are all the tech youtubers like this? Why they don't test games which are native to both windows and MacOS? They are kind of spreading misinformation about true gaming potential of Macbooks. There are games like: Resident Evil 4 Death Stranding Layers of Fear Baldur’s Gate 3 Lies of P GRID Legends Stray Resident Evil Village Resident Evil 2 Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Frostpunk 2 Snowrunner Announced to get released on Mac soon in 2025: Cyberpunk 2077 Control Dead island 2 Assassin's Creed Shadows Palword Crimson's Desert Path of Exile 2 Robocop and so on.
