@@RunForPeace-hk1cu I use a desktop with dual 4090 for my rendering and fusion in DR. I cannot use any kind of laptop including a smoking Mac to do this as its waay too slow. Its fine for browsing the web and checking email etc. Sure if you travel and want a laptop with good battery life or browse the web, light work loads etc. Apple cannot mine bitcoin, run any heavy 3d or GPU intensive tasks (except the older Mac Pro with external GPU), or run local AI models. Personally I hate carrying around a 4K laptop as I would definitely lose it, and I like editing video with a real keyboard, mouse and multi-monitors. I just carry around an older M1 mac book when I travel and don't try to do any real work. Right tool for the job is the way I work. Some folks are fine with Apple laptops and I wish them well. For people that can take advantage of a GPU and whose time is worth more than the 5 to 10c the extra power costs, then Apple is not a good match.

Nowhere near . There is no CUDA support. If you use OpenCL it might be similar . With CUDA it gets 'smoked' as this guy says.

Yes , video edditing is one (as that is what eveybody is comparing) but its just an incling of what computers do. Show other stuff like virtualization , gaming , code rendering ext.

Why did you compare it to the 7950x when the 9950X easily beats it on the Cinebench multithreaded benchmark...the 9950x scores 2345 on Cinebench R24 (according to Hardware Unboxed) while the M4 Max scores 1993.

I'm not inpressed. When talking about serious performance, the purpose of a CPU in a hig end Windows laptop is just to feed the Nvidia GPU, which does most of the heavy lifting. The M4 can't change anything, they are good laptops for video editing and that's it. For more demanding applications like AAA gaming, 3D applications, VFX / Nuke, Machine learning Unreal, VR, CAD / CAM, scientific visualization, ... you still need a Windows (or Linux) laptop with Nvidia

Apparently you have been confused by the usual Apple missinformation benchmarks, which use Geekbench or other iGPU intensive benchmarks to compare an Apple chip having an iGPU (such as the M4) against CPUs that do not have any integrated GPU because they are designed to use discrete GPUs. Using iGPU benchmarks on a system without this component is a technical aberration, but apparently it works fine with typical ( ignorant) Apple fanboys. Secondly, most Threadripper Pro systems are sold with high end Nvidia boards. That combination is several times faster than the fastest M4 for graphic intensive applications, 3D rendering, machine learning, CAD / CAM, Unreal, and so on. And also for high end storage and high speed connectivity, which is the other use case of Threadripper Pro. In any case, your technical ignorance is evident when you mention the Threadripper Pro rather than the normal Threadripper ( non pro ), which would be the potential competitor, because the main difference between the Pro and non Pro is not the CPU speed but the number of PCIe gen5 lanes. The Pro models are typically used for adding many NVMe drives, high performance cards such as 100Gb ethernet, additional GPUs, etc, which are limited capabilities in the Threadripper non Pro . But the M4 is extremely limited in this aspect and it can not even be compared with a Threadripper so it is absurd to mention the Threadripper Pro, it just can't compete in similar applications or in hardware connectivity. So it is not that you are wrong, you are not even wrong.

Mr. I’m not impressed 😅 This is a SOC and it’s so much more efficient by multitudes and you can sit in a shop while yes, not matching a 4090 and threadripper pro still do decent work. I just seen a guy use this in blender and it actually got reasonably close to a 4080. Just because you don’t have the highest in specs doesn’t mean you need it. Plenty of people do good work on computers without the highest tier machine. Also Don’t forget music producers and photo editing. It’s actually really good at that btw. While it not the best at anything it’s good enough to be a kind of jack of all trades on the go for many things. All those niche things you mentioned are like the 1% market share of what laptops are used for.

I was answering to a person who was saying that the M4 provides more "performance" than the Threadriper Pro, and then you jump into the conversation to say that the M4 has a good battery live? is this for real? what is next, that your toaster is better at toasting bread than Microsoft Windows? come on. Secondly, what you call "niche" applications are really the main applications of the "Workstation" market, where the Threadripper Pro belongs. What is not a principal area of interest for Workstations anymore is video editing, simply because any modern laptop ( or desktop) with a decent GPU can edit 4K video pretty well, you don't need a high end Workstation for that anymore, and nobody would buy a Theadripper Pro just for video editing. I'm not saying that video editing is "niche", it is just "trivial" for that kind of machines. In fact a Theadripper Pro + Nvidia 4090 can render 4K video with denoise.and most common effects several times faster than realtime (and several times faster than M4), but few people needs that kind of speed for video editing. Only when there are very complex effects it makes sense to use a high end Workstation in that market.

Crossover, Cxpatcher and steam works wonders. Can actually play a majority of recent AAA games but at like a hit of 33% since it’s running through translation layers. Also it’s excellent in blender, music production, photo and video editing and LLM that need huge amounts of VRAM. It’s not just a calculator 😅
