I currently own an M4 Conv with BM3 Stage 1 tune so lots of pops and bangs similar to the M5. Great car but throttle response can be a bit jerky. M5 probably smoother power delivery and if i went for a 4 door would be my next choice.

As an M4 owner you would think BMW would listen when EVERYONE says the exhaust is weak. I installed a Dinan free flow exhaust and it is night and day different the way BMW should have made it originally.

This is a really helpful comparison. Of course these cars are priced differently, serve different needs and are different in many ways. But that doesn’t mean customers are not considering both, especially on the used market. Personally I think the M4 looks better, certainly on the outside, but the M5 offers another level of interior luxury and comfort that, price difference aside, may make it a more practical choice as a daily whilst retaining the M badge. Arguably a comparison with the F80 M3 would be more linear here but I am actually pleased to see the M4 here as it tests more of the differences between the range.

You cannot decide a race with weight only you need to check the chassis and aerodynamics as well. M5 has a better drag coefficient than m4 so clearly m5 is the winner

Owned both - still have the M4 Comp with Ultimate Pack. At just 1,537kg against the 1,811kg M5 its 43 stone lighter, which makes a major difference to the handling.

Have now owned both and I’d agree. The M4 felt more urgent, more nimble. It felt faster in everyday driving. Hard to describe but I think the weight and additional comfort of the M5 numbs the sense of pace - in reality though, it’s way faster, you just don’t notice it like you do in the M4. Loved my M4. Love the M5 but they are night & day to drive and the M5 is much more of a sleeper which suits me now I’m older 😂

I'd like to point out that the M4 has the availability of Bootmod3\ECUtek tunes, for 500 quid, that basically gives you the same performance as a sock M5. HOWEVER, the reason you'd want an M5 is the AWD. I LOVE my M4, and has almost 600bhp from bolt-on's and tune. Rolling race, you'd be pushed to find a faster car for the money. Sadly, everyone is all about 0-60, wish the M4 will NOT do great. RWD and only 375 tyres on the rear, you can spin for days, even with PS4 S.

It depends where you want to go. If you live in Bristol, you're lucky to be able to choose the M4 or the M5. Heading to London though, It HAS to be the M4, M5 will take you in the wrong direction but to Birmingham and further North, I'd take the M5. M25 is nearly always too busy though, so I'd rule that out. M62 is great for East-West driving up North.

Had a couple of M3’s ( E46,E92) and a couple of M5’s (F10,F90) 2 different class cars the 30k difference is in the size and power the M5’s are intended for more mature driver then the M4,3’s I did trade the M5 for a Porsche 991.2 Turbo S That makes M-Cars seem basic.
