Ray Cokes ist eine Legende. Mitte der 80er-Jahre kam er zum Musiksender MTV und moderierte dort seine wegweisende Sendung «MTV’s Most Wanted», die ihn in ganz Europa zum Star machte und zeitweise bis zu 60 Millionen Zuschauer hatte. Cokes lieferte eine bis dahin gänzlich unbekannte Form von Talk-, Entertainment- und Musikshow, meist moderiert aus dem Stegreif und ohne Konzept. Ray Cokes hat soeben seine Biografie veröffentlicht: In «My Most Wanted Life» schildert er unverblümt alle wichtigen Stationen seiner abenteuerlichen und aussergewöhnlichen Karriere. Cokes erzählt von seinen ersten Gehversuchen als Moderator und seinem rasanten Aufstieg zum bekanntesten Gesicht von MTV Europe. Er gibt Einblicke in sein Privatleben und die Zeit nach MTV, als er mit Drogenproblemen sowie heftigen Depressionen zu kämpfen hatte. Natürlich erzählt der Moderator auch ausgiebig von seinen Begegnungen und Freundschaften mit unzähligen Stars. Im Gespräch mit Andi Rohrer, SRF 3, Moderator, Zürich.

Ray Cokes est une légende. Au milieu des années 80, il est arrivé sur la chaîne musicale MTV où il a animé l’émission phare «MTVs Most Wanted», qui en a fait une star dans l’Europe entière et attirait devant l’écran jusqu’à 60 millions de téléspectateurs. Cokes proposait une forme tout à fait inconnue jusque là de discussions, de divertissement et de musique, souvent animée de façon spontanée et sans véritable concept. Ray Cokes vient de publier sa biographie: dans «My Most Wanted Life», il évoque sans concessions toutes les étapes importantes de sa carrière aventureuse et exceptionnelle. Il parle de ses premiers essais en tant qu’animateur et de son ascension fulgurante pour devenir le visage le plus connu de MTV Europe. Il donne un aperçu de sa vie privée et de l’époque après MTV, lorsqu’il a dû lutter contre des problèmes de drogue et de violentes dépressions. L’animateur évoquera bien entendu aussi largement ses rencontres et ses amitiés avec d’innombrables stars. En discussion avec Andi Rohrer.

Most Wanted was the best show ever! I was supposed to be on the phone in one of the episode but the call failed unfortunately. But Ray sent me an autographed photo of himself and I still have it in my desk drawer! Thank you very much Ray, your humor influenced me a lot and to this day I still use many of your catchphrases and comic routines :)

In the early nineties my wife and I had no money but we had MTV Europe. When Ray played the anagram game we started sending in our own anagrams which he used in the show. Examples were Aerosmith (Tom Is A Her) or Tori Amos (I am Roots.) We got a couple of MTV Tee shirts as a thank you. Thanks Ray and the team. The Tee shirts have long worn out but the memories remain!

what an influence Ray and his show had on me (us) . Working as a young bloke in television "Taking the camera off the tripod, getting a wideangle on that BetacamSp etc" we all started doing it . To be fair i think mtv sports (usa) did it earlier and a lot of it came from action sports. But Ray's personality took it to the next level.

The moderator is a bit anoying, nice to see Ray Cokes to handle it good :) I always said, once Ray was gone from MTV, MTV went down. Of course it has a lot to do with internet etc too, but also the Managers, had never a complete real "vision".

Such a shame this guy went off air, grew up with his shows on MTV. Sadly the Hamburg incident happened and MTV should've backed him on that one. Such a disgrace of an audience. Probably a lot lost in translation (and as a polite guy Ray is he probably knows it) but that interviewer should learn some manners, your talking to a legend (as far as 90's youth is concerned) mate.

This interviewer made all the rookie mistakes: trying to be funnier than the interviewee at first, sticking to a rigid order of questions, not really listening, and as a consequence of that not being able to get into what has just been said, and as a consequence of that asking a random question and killing the vibe produced by the previous answer.
