Clod Hopper. Clod is a reference to "Dirt Clod" a chunk of earthen dirt. So a boot with a high arch like a cowboy boot of sorts than could walk onto a dirt clod and it didn't crush it as the dirt clod fit under the arch of the boot was a clod hopper. It went over the clod. And it would be a fairly big boot.

In my day a clodhopper was a big shoe. I got teased at home over my big feet by my little brother putting his shoes inside of mine. I can see it also meaning someone clumsy, since having giant feet could cause a person to trip over them (in the joke world at least).
