not that it isnt green, it saves time shunting engines in and out and the train isnt limited to just all elctric mode as u have seen. makes perfect sense. ps and the deisel locos also act as control cabs.

清德賴 Gaps between rails are necessary when you have huge temperature difference and that so much earthquake like Japan. Also, they built these railways long before you were born. That's why in Shinkansen they use gapless rails. Btw, Japanese were the first in the world to run a high speed rail network. If you are so smart why don't you make some steel that can be withstand the temperature change and earthquake, and be cheap enough to replace all of these gap rails?
