I heard that the big advantage of the M777 is its light weight compared to other howitzers of the same caliber. The lower weigh allows it to be sling loaded by big helicopters and to put more guns on a cargo plane. I don't think Ukraine is sling loading the M777, but the light weight probably aids in ground handling too.

At the beginning of the Russo-Ukrainian War in February 2022, the Ukrainian Army was just a fairly small force that was merely equipped with hand-held, small arms (rocket-propelled grenade launchers, etc.) for its self-defense needs. Now, 17 months into the war and they are employing all sorts of heavy weapons that are mostly supplied by the Western democracies/NATO countries (field artillery, self-propelled artillery, SAMs, MBTs, etc.).Eventually the Ukrainians are going to be better armed than their Russian opponents. Having said that, I sincerely hope that the Ukrainians will ultimately prevail in their valiant struggle for national integrity!

Origin is United Kingdom, in a town called Barrow-in-Furness in the United Kingdom. Do we say Levi jeans are from China because the zippers are made there? The M777 is a fine bit of British Engineering.

THE HOWLITZER IS AN AMAZING PIECE OF MACHINERY!!! It's light and versatile and that's why it was cherished in WWII against the Tiger Tanks. Plus, the Veterans told stories about how they would line them up like a firing squad for more lethality and it works better for surprise attacks. Anyway, shared some Battle of Bulge tactics that gave us victory. Thanks.

@@janwitts2688 The M777 was designed by BAE in Barrow-in-Furness, England not Scotland. The recoil and titanium components are also manufactured there. Everything else for the M777 is made at Watervliet Arsenal in New York, USA. The percussion cap for muskets was indeed invented by a Scotsman in Scotland, but that had little to do with breech loading. Percussion caps just sped up the loading process. Breech loading has to do with cartridges and using steel or reinforced iron to strengthen the breech of a rifle or gun. Although, obviously percussion caps deserve credit for speeding up the development of breach loading rifles like the Sharp's Rifle. It sounds like you're just looking for a reason to flaunt Scottish patriotism. Why don't you tell me more about the kilt and bagpipes? Those are certainly very neat inventions! 😁
