Scorpion doesn't fit well into the modern MBT role, but if viewed as an infantry tank, its design is exceptional. It's just fast enough to lead ground advances with the infantry, well armed enough to create breakthroughs, and its operational mobility is enough that it can be wherever it needs to be.

I mean, if we're talking about tanks engaging from prepared positions (dug-out holes or other forms of fixed cover), then it still has an advantage over other tank designs. The fact that its gun is so far above the main body means that it can fight from a position where the only part of it that's visible is the gun itself. I recommend Installation 00's video on the Scorpion, because he crunched the numbers on this tank and concluded that, among other things, its gun is actually really, really powerful.
@downrangecash24183 жыл бұрын
The issue the scorpion has is with design. It has a massive profile, is vastly underpowered for its size, has those 4 treads, and has way too many shot traps. It's too damn big- and heavy- to conceivably fit into an anti-infantry role. And as a MBT it has way too many issues to not get slaughtered when pitted against far more sensible designs like a modern Abrams. I love the Scorpion. It's cool. But it isn't a good tank.

The VTOL combat air drop capability is one that is often overlooked when comparing the scorpion to other military vehicles. @tonberryking423 жыл бұрын
@@TheArklyte MACs are heavy. Hilariously heavy, such that they don't fucking move without starship levels of thrust - which is why they're on star ships and orbital platforms. Also, tanks are cheaper and faster to make than even the very *ablatively* designed Spartan III program. In the time it takes to run a batch of Spartan IIIs from acquisition of *teenagers* to the final suicide teams, you're looking at at least 2 to 4 years. For the same price, you can have more of these tanks than you have places on star ships to put them in after only 6 months. And also, they're more likely to survive their first mission. And also keep in mind, part of what made the Spartan III program cheap is they brought in orphans and then sent them on missions that, while they succeeded almost categorically died while pulling off - which means ONI didn't have to explain why they were paying wages/pensions to more than the TINY handful that did survive (I'm talking like, 2 or 3 individuals surviving 3 production runs of several hundred each). And their armour and super soldier procedure was still really pricy. And in terms of cost, a single Spartan II might cost the same in dollars as this tank, but that's only looking at the individual, their treatment, and their equipment. It does not factor in the man hours or training, and the *10 to 13 years* it takes to get from *literal fucking abduction at 7 to 9 years old* to super soldier.

As an armored enthusiast, the biggest issue I will always have with the Scorpion's design, is the single operator. Sure it reduces crew casualties if destroyed, but the there is only one person doing all the jobs of a tank. Ideally Three people should operate a tank: Commander/spotter, Gunner, and Driver. Allocating all these jobs to one person, even today, would be extremely overwhelming. Dodging incoming fire, trying to spot enemy positions and then firing on the enemy, in a real battle, would over load the one operator.

The Scorpion is named an MBT but as a scout tank or Infantry Fighting Vehicle it would fit the bill far better. Its design, its operational range, its weapon placement and its capabilities fit that role. It also makes a lot more sense to strap a scout tank to a Pelican and drop it in the middle of a half-developed world with limited infrastructure and no large maintenance potential than it is to drop a full MBT.
@hanzzel60862 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind MBT stands for Main Battle Tank and simply refers to, well, the main tank of a military, it is not an indication of a vehcles capabilities. As I understand it the Scorpion was designated as a light tank during it's design phase. And it was meant for rapid deployment from naval vessels and engaging in asymmetric/urban/mountainous warfare (hence the extreme elevation/depression angles of the main gun), with heavier tanks forming the actual backbone (Aka the MBT) of the UNSC. But since those where the 2 primary activities the UNSC was performing (and nobody saw that changing) pre-Covenant war and it did them very well while being very cheap, it saw wide spread adoption. Over time the other, heavier tanks in service where phased out with out any dedicated replacements, thus it became the UNSC's MBT. And during the Human-Covenant war humanity didn't have the resources/time to switch production to more resource intense medium/heavy tanks. Especially when the Scorpion was doing so well.
@TheDemigans2 жыл бұрын
@@hanzzel6086 its a weird tank. Its a whopping 66 tons despite its small profile and titanium-ceramic armor. The Grizzly is just 5.5 tons heavier despite its significantly longer and higher frame&turret and an extra gun (2x120mm instead of 1x90mm), and also called an MBT despite its much higher firepower. Even the wheeled materièl vehicle (Cobra) is called an MBT, despite being closer to a Centauro wheeled tank destroyer.

@@TheDemigans Yeah, the developers of Halo did no research what so ever regarding military doctrine or equipment.
@Deepingmind2 жыл бұрын
Their research was fine, its just that the research was based on small unit operations rather than large scale strategic warfare. This isn't the MBT of a thousand armored divisions crashing over a world. Its the MBT of a platoon if someone said "you know what, drop platoon should have the firepower of an armored element for when they are fighting on random little dots across the galaxy and sometimes need something that hits harder than any boot on the ground could." They are cheap relatively speaking, easy to use, easy to produce and highly effective in their given role. Plus the UNSC hands them out like candy. So what you get is the option that EVERY single platoon of infantry can be supported by a squadron of Tanks which is extremely valuable when your missions are often based around squad and platoon level engagements.
@TheDemigans2 жыл бұрын
@@Deepingmind if it were as well designes like you said it would have been designated as an actual light/scout tank and wouldnt have been a whopping 66 tons. Even its much bigger and more powerful brother the Grizzly, which does sport the more conventional MBT design and two 1.5x bigger caliber guns is a mere 5.5 tons heavier. Like many other design aspects in Halo the size and weights are off. Only in this case they are overstated instead of understated. The UNSC ships for example are almost universally smaller than their design would allow. In this case the weight and vehicle type of the Scorpion are wrongly stated. A simple change from "MBT" to "light/scout tank" and a change in weight to the 30 to 40 ton range would already settle this since the tank technically has the shape, design and usage of a light/scout tank. And in sci-fi stories I absolutely love the idea of using a smaller, lighter tank or tank destroyer on landing parties instead of the oversized, overweight nightmare vehicles often dropped by far too small vehicles in most sci-fi.

@Tank50us3 жыл бұрын
The funny thing is, as shown by modern tanks, shell size is almost irrelevant when it comes to defeating enemy armor. Sure, it *helps*, but in reality, any shot that actually penetrates even a modern tank has the potential to cause a lot of internal devastation. If you don't believe me, just think of it this way: All modern tanks have some hull storage for the ammunition. If a shot penetrates, and goes off inside one of those ammo racks, it won't matter if that was a 20mm AA shell that got really lucky, or a 203mm howitzer shell, the tank will go up, and the crew will get cooked. By having the crew in the most protected part of the tank, and having the ammunition and feed mechanism in the turret with the gun, you eliminate that risk to the crew. And since it uses Hydrogen Fuel Cells, you don't really need to worry about fuel fires either (since the cells contain water). And with a -30 to +60 degree gun elevation, you have a lot of room to fight the tank in a hull down position. Overall, it's a very, very dependable, and survivable design, minus the treat layout, but that's not really a major concern of mine.

He's using in-game physics for one thing, but he's also assuming the projectile is a solid 20 cm long tungsten slug and saying that if it were a sabot it would be faster, but it IS a Sabot. That's the only type of ammunition you can realistically use is smooth bore gun. Even if you assumed the projectile was a solid slug it still only has 1/5th the kinetic energy of a modern M1. In reality, if you use in game velocities, the tank would just be firing a smaller round at a fraction of the speed of modern tank guns. Using Tungsten also hurts the gun too, because at that velocity, uranium would have better time going through armor.

More like a mobile infantry weapons platform then a true MBT. So glad the lore for it did back up the gameplay of it. It does beat everything. Would have been cool i the games if you could switch from HE to SABOT rounds. Remove the explosive part but bonus damage to direct hits.

MBT just means "main battle tank" for the formation using it. So its still a true MBT by definition, its just that it's the MBT of mobile infantry detachments.

Track pods add a unnecessary degree of complexity while offering no advantages in traction speed or ease of maintenance. They also increase ground pressure compared to conventional tracks meaning it cannot traverse soft ground making it's cross country speed much lower than a conventional tank. It's small crew also leads to high work load and increased user fatigue compared to a tank with dedicated commander,driver,and gunner stations and lowers situational awareness by removing a pair of eyes that could be acquiring targets while the gunner engages others. The fixes are easy. Add a commander station to the body, give it conventional tracks, add a commanders site with a commander override to the turrets position. And perhaps a remote MG turret to suppress infantry with. Then it would be at least akin to a t-72 with actual gun depression. Or one of the early AMX tanks with an oscillating turret.
@zidniafifamani23782 жыл бұрын
Maybe they have that many track pods because the tank is just too big to have reliable common dual pods design?
@Lukos00362 жыл бұрын
@@zidniafifamani2378 Being that large, a standard track arrangement would be easier and more reliable actually. It would also spread the weight of the vehicle out more improving cross country speed which is the entire point of tracks.

I think the best practical use of the tank can be it's 4 tracks instead of 2 we use now. I'm not a tank designer but it just looks like it might be a good idea if implemented right
@raf74hawk123 жыл бұрын
@@nahx6205 The issue with having more sets of tracks is that now you need more drive wheels, a more complicated transmission, etc. Doubling up these mechanical parts that will require regular maintenance introduces more parts that could fail and put the vehicle out of action for repairs. The redundancy is a plus, but I'm not sure if you could get the tank back if you get de-tracked on one of the pods. It would still probably be a mobility kill.

The Scorpion is the sum of everything wrong with futuristic tanks - Quad Tread that increase ground pressure for nothing and reduce mobility - Too high profile - Technologically incoherent even for Halo standards - Pilot cockpit too exposed both for its positioning and windshield - Outgunned - No advanced sensors

I cant help but feel that the Scorpion tanks appearance is based on its name as opposed to actually having been developed to meet a specific battle field role or the iterative evolution of a talk to this form. It suffers from Mammoth tank disorder. “lets give it 4 tracks because its scifi and cool!” when in actuality all they have done is make one tank have the maintenance requirements of two. Looking at the type of conflict the UNFC are fighting I cant help but feel that something thats not a tank would have been far more useful. They are hopelessly out numbered and outmatched. Something fast, hard to spot and packs a punch would be far better. Something not to dissimilar to the American Tank destroyer doctrine of WW2 So that they could hit there enemy from a concealed position, hopefully kill it and then disengage before they can retaliate in any meaningful way. I feel like in a conflict against such an advanced opponent with numerical superiority one of they only viable options is to avoid engaging them in a pitched battle. Pleas dot murder me for the spelling and grammatical errors. I'm dyslexic, did my best to spell check it but something inevitably got through. Videos on point once again. Keep it coming I love this stuff.

As iconic as the Scorpion is, it is a poorly designed main battle tank that wouldn't stand much chance against T-72s, let alone Covenant armor. The four independent tracks are the most apparent issue, when looking at the vehicle. Each track is equipped with their own hinges, drive sprockets, return rollers, bogies, and drive train segment, increase the maintenance requirements, increase the mechanical complexity, and decreases the overall reliability of the drivetrain. This was actually an experiment by the US Army in the 1950s and it was abandoned because it was inferior to conventional track designs. It has not been revisited by any military to my knowledge and, if it has, it has most likely also been abandoned due to its inherent problems. The 90mm cannon is also underpowered as an anti-armor weapon. 90mm guns were phased out of US and NATO service in the late 1950s and early 1960s to make way for the 105mm and later 120mm guns, which boasted higher muzzle velocities, greater ranges, and more effectiveness against composite armors. The Soviet equivalent, the 100mm, was phased out around the same time for the 115mm and then the 125mm, for much the same reason. Given the fact that we see no indication that ETC technology is employed by the UNSC, nor any indication that the propellant is significantly improved from modern propellants, it would indicate that the 90mm gun is on par with the 90mm gun mounted on the M48 Pattons of 1958. The third significant concern is the exposed forward MG position. For a military that has sophisticated AI and drone technology, the fact they don't have a remote weapon station in that position, instead opting for an open ring mount with no cover for the operator, indicates a significant lack of awareness, especially when one considers that the primary role of the UNSC prior to the Human-Covenant War was Counter Insurgency Operations against the Insurrectionists. Against a foe that primarily employs ambush tactics and assymetrical warfare strategies, having the machine gunner so exposed makes manning that position suicide (as anyone who has tried to man that position in game certainly knows. The fourth major concern is the crew ergonomics. The Scorpion has space for exactly 1 crewmember, with a second able to take the aforementioned machine gun position. The second crewmember, however, has no ability to assist in the operation of the tank itself, meaning a single individual is responsible for driving the tank, laying and firing the gun, AND spotting targets. That single individual is more overworked than any other tanker in human history. Indeed, the crew ergonomics alone make the Scorpion one of the worst tanks in any alternate universe I have yet explored. The worst in terms of division of labor we ever got in the past was a series of two-man designs, which incorporated a driver, and a gunner/loader/commander. Later designs would have the Driver, gunner, and loader/commander. Most of those designs were 1920s and 1930s French designs, though the US, UK, Germany, Russia, and Japan had a couple of their own. Universally, the tanks that followed those concepts were inferior to virtually any other tank, due to the fact that the commander (who's role is to command the tank and spot targets) was too busy either loading the gun or firing the gun to command the tank or spot targets, leading to tanks with 2 or 3 man crews becoming isolated and destroyed by hostile infantry or tanks they never saw. Some modern tanks, particularly those of Soviet origin, do incorporate three man crews. But they do so by replacing the loader with an autoloader, leaving the commander free to command the tank and spot targets, the gunner free to shoot targets designated by the commander, and the driver free to drive. In the Scorpion, one singular person is expected to drive the tank, spot targets, lay the gun on said targets, and engage said targets simultaneously. While it may work in a video game, it most certainly does not in real life and no amount of AI support can alleviate that.

Reasons why the Scorpion is a bad tank: #1. It's tall as fuck, but can't depress its gun. This makes concealing the hull and firing from an elevated position impossible. #2. 66 tons, but only able to go about 20mph. Most MBTs today are comparable in weight but far outpace it in terms of speef and maneuverability. #3. Only 90mm for its main gun. 90mm anti tank guns were phased out of service shortly after ww2 for a reason. Not to mention that the Scorpion is restricted to HEAT. #4 small crew = more stress.
