Yes they started putting simple electric circuits in american AAA ammo in WWII to create a proximity fuse for the navy, and when it was no secret anymore american army also got the fuse for its artillery, made the shell explode in the air when sensing ground spreading shrapnel instead of digging a hole in the ground. So the military have been doing this for many decades. Modern electronics is also light so as long as it rests on somthing sturdy with no give I guess it is easier to put electronics in these days. But first someone have to come up with the idea.

@@verdebusterAP Well, they're not made for broad area targets. They're essentially a tube launched, short range, guided rocket. So, don't want to use them up firing dozens at a time to knock out a company of approaching infantryman. That's when you use multiple tubes of more standard 155 rounds, which cost between $2000 and $4000 each. The Excalibur is more like a 155mm sniper round. Only one is fired at a time to make sure you hit a specific, high valued target.

It appears to me that by the time the gun is calibrated, loaded and fired, the mobile enemy would be long gone. It must be designed for stationary hard targets? I can’t see using it on a single vehicle such as a Jeep or truck. I am aware the artillery personnel need practice could be very expensive and wasteful. But that’s just my opinion.
@MajSolo

My picture is modern artillery is very precise and do not need these shells but these various new coming rounds can extend the range and some of them rocket boosted increasing the range even furter and we end up with ranges where arty would have accuracy problems if the shell could not steer is my view. So I think they be used for special long range shots unless they manage to mass produce them and the price drops.
@van123446

@@MajSolo for common artillery shells, just look at drone footage of any field, and you'll see hundreds of exploded rounds. Hardly accurate for every day shells. Smart home command flown kamakaze type drones are infinitely cheaper and many many many times more accurate, and even more to my point, they don't take an a small army to transport, set up, and operate.

@@van123446 Well there is a channel reporting Ukraine war in detail. Cause the danger of counter battery arty is spread out and not in groups. So each of them have to calculate their own fire solution. Using tradiotional shells it will be preceded by one shot, the observer observes and call for adjustment. So he probably only had ONE arty helping him, he adjusted and the second shell hit from miles away and knocked out the tank. In 2 shots. Not bad. We know russian arty is inaccurate maybe you seen holes from russian arty. Ukrainian arty can hit trenches and individual soldiers.

As cool as this is, in a real war can they setup, shoot and move before the enemy can return fire with a missile or similar? Or are the enemies not capable of returning accurate fire that quickly at these ranges? I bet there were some challenges designing the circuitry and mechanics for the control surfaces that were durable enough to survive the launch.
@UzumakiNaruto_
@UzumakiNaruto_ Жыл бұрын
I guess this depends on how advanced and well trained the army you're fighting is. If they're well trained and technologically advanced then its possible to respond in a relatively short time with good counter battery fire. If not then you can probably get away safe before the enemy has time to respond. That's why most nations are switching to mobile artillery platforms if they can afford it. So far in Ukraine it doesn't seem like the Russians are very good with counter battery fire, however loitering drones have been pretty effective in damaging and destroying Ukrainian artillery and other vehicles. Just send up a drone and wait until you spot a target and send that drone to attack it. Much easier for them than to try and call in a artillery counter battery strike.

Is Ukraine war not a real war? Because this is the largest conventional war since Korea probably. You have to consider that the shooting an Excalibur is rarely on short notice. The recon finds the target, the crew moves to its position fires the round and redeploys before the enemy can triangulate their position and effectively engage the target. Even if they engage the shell has left the barrel and cannot be stopped.

Bullet on bullet interception technology was developed in the mid 80’s to mid 90’s. It was sorta hit and miss then, mostly miss, but now has improved markedly and is now much more reliable. This is a whole pile of different technology’s fused together to make this activity possible. The grunts loading and shooting the gun are only a piece of the puzzle.
@koumoto248
@koumoto248 Жыл бұрын
@@americanrambler4972 While it's true that bullet on bullet interception technology was developed during that time period, it's important to note that it's still not foolproof and has limitations. In addition, the level of reliability can vary depending on factors such as weather conditions and the specific system being used. Furthermore, it's not accurate to say that the soldiers using the technology are just a small part of the puzzle. They play a crucial role in the success of the system and must be highly trained to operate it effectively. The technology may be advanced, but it's ultimately the soldiers who make the split-second decisions that determine whether it succeeds or fails.
