It’s more common in systems like the United States and some European countries. FCPS (Fellowship of the College of Physicians and Surgeons) FCPS is a postgraduate medical degree awarded in countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, and others, after completing both theoretical and practical training in a specific specialty. The focus is more on rigorous exams and clinical competence. Key Differences: Residency emphasizes training within a hospital environment, while FCPS combines academic exams and practical exposure. Residency often leads to board certification in Western countries, while FCPS is a recognized degree in South Asia and some international systems. 2. Simultaneously Pursuing Residency and FCPS In some countries, it’s possible to pursue both simultaneously, as FCPS training can align with residency programs. However, this depends on: The country’s regulations. The institution’s policies. Your ability to manage the workload and requirements of both programs. For example, in Bangladesh, many doctors train for FCPS while working in residency programs, as FCPS training often overlaps with residency rotations. 3. Best Degree After MBBS: MD, MS, or FCPS? The "best" degree depends on your career goals and geographic location: MD (Doctor of Medicine): Ideal for physicians aiming to work in internal medicine or specialized fields like cardiology, endocrinology, etc. It's research-oriented and is common in countries like the USA, India, and Europe. MS (Master of Surgery): Designed for surgical specialties like neurosurgery, orthopedics, or general surgery. It’s an excellent choice if you want to become a surgeon. FCPS: Highly regarded in South Asia, covering various specialties (medical and surgical). Recognized internationally but not as widespread as MD/MS in Western countries. For neurosurgery, MS or equivalent surgical training (e.g., FRCS in the UK) is typically the best choice. 4. Pathway to Becoming a Neurosurgeon (Starting From MBBS) Becoming a neurosurgeon requires long-term dedication. Here’s a roadmap: During MBBS (1st Year to Final Year): Focus on Anatomy and Neuroanatomy Develop a strong understanding of the nervous system. Pay extra attention to neurophysiology and neuroanatomy lectures and dissection. Extracurricular Knowledge Attend neurosurgery-related seminars or conferences. Read beginner books on neurosurgery, like “Neurosurgery Fundamentals” or similar texts. Research Experience Participate in research projects involving neuroscience or neurology.
