Harimoto prepared very well for this match. The Japanese Coaches researched Ma Long style very well. You can see in first two sets, Harimoto even knew where the powerful fore hand shot of Ma Long will bring to ball to (take a look carefully, Hari was always ready for the kill shots of Ma Long). This made Ma Long felt hard and even doubted himself. Even more, Hari try him best to place the ball to the open corner of Ma Long to bring some supprises to Ma (which is the best way to counter Chinese's style), and it worked well. From first two sets, Ma Long was confused and made many unforced error since he felt everything was out of his control.. But just two sets. From the third to fifth set, he caught most of Harimoto ' s A-corner shots and made those even became Harimoto weekness (from the playing styles that threat Chinese player, it then became user's weekness, how great is Ma Long!). Also, Ma Long try more technical spin serves to control Harimoto's playing tempo, also made his forehand shots more spinny. From being the possitive one, Harimoto no longer could read Ma Long actions since Ma was changing to another style. And with this, Ma Long debunked the mystery of "Harimoto's improvement". Actually, compare with the match in Japan Open 2018, Harimoto is not much better in term of adapting another player's playing style, maybe he is better in his forehand technique and reflexing (or maybe his mental, I don't know, he still played bad in big events), but all I saw was just the movement in research of Ma Long's style from Japanese coaches. Remember in 2019 Asian cup, Harimoto applied the same winning tatics in the previous Asian cup to Fan Zhendong and totally failed and got fuck up. So, in my point of view, Harimoto is not improving just as his fans praise him, and he needs a long way to make him at the level of Fan Zhendong. When he can defeat Fan more often, then think about surpassing Ma Long.

Ma Long's short game and control on the serve receive is incredible this game. He returns basically everything to forehand or wide forehand so Harimoto can't use his banana flick as his main weapon. Even when Harimoto gets a spinny loop to open with, Ma Long just counters back with his own forehand. This is why Ma Long is the smartest player alive.

Even though winning 4-1, Malong was really challeged in the first 2 sets, Harimoto‘s strength is his first three stokes, just not strong enough for the rally against malong, but you can imagine he is only 15 yrs old and will become stronger and stonger over time..

The first two sets Ma Long was going with the tempo of Harimoto. Fast play suits Harimotos blockskills. After that Ma Long was dictating the Tempo. Also Ma Long stopped screaming back every point, cause it’s not his usual habit it turned better for his concentration. The gap in quality was more visible. Short: Harimoto is faster, Ma Long is better. Ps. Harimotos screaming is a habit. A bad habit. Needs professional treatment. Makes this sport also unattractive to newbies. Who wants to watch a Tourette for an Hour?

People didn't realize that but in order to crush Screamoto, you definitely have to beat in on the first game. Then he will start doubting himself and more and more unforced errors occur. As if you can recall, during T-League vs Lin Jun Un, during junior cup vs Wong Chu Qin, during Qatar Open vs Mattias Falcked by Ma Long, and in WTTC vs An Un Hui. He loses at the first game, then he loses the match.

Harimoto had a great game plan to bring Ma forward with a relatively weak flick against slow floater balls and counter as fast as he could. He was never going to match Ma with a mid court game. Also HM used his flick kills to good effect with unpredictability. But since Ma is not from this planet, he wore him down with alien rules.

As of now, I think Fan Zhen Dong is the best player in the world. The guy that knocked off Fan at the WTTC was plain lucky. Mr. Fan had an off-day. As for Harimoto, a lot of players can beat him.

I am a big fan of FZD and I used to think that if he would meet Hari in Tokyo, he would be able to stop him. But now I am not sure any more. Look at the first 4 games, Ma had to give everything he has to win and win by a ever so small edge. If Hari can improve his mental game a bit more, don't crash under pressure, I will be truely worried for the CNT in Tokyo.

This Harimoto spends way too much energy screaming. I think if he can keep it under control, he can become a better player with more time to plan for the next point. Japanese players are usually calm similar to Swedish players but this Harimoto is 180 degree from most of his comrades.

What is the problem with Hashimoto's scream guys? He is 16 years old and No.5 in the world. He is playing the best players (maybe in history) and give them real fights, and he tried his best to win every point. His strong will maybe the reason why he is that good. Really can't imagine what will Harimoto become. We know and witness how great and perfect Ma . is, and we can see the clear weakness of Harimoto in his form and consistency. But he still managed to have a very close fight with Ma Long in the first two sets.

in the 1st round, opponents were feeling out each other and giving more short and medium shots. Harimoto had the advantage since he has a wider arsenal of backhand shots compared to Ma Long's standard backhand control and set up style. Backhand is good in such short medium shots since the wrist is highly versatile. However backhand shots are predictable when balls are played to his forehand side, it is either a short medium ball if Harimoto cuts or pushes or it will be played into Ma Long far backhand if he flips. We can see that Ma Long took advantage of this throughout the game. The fact that Harimoto barely won the first set showed that Ma Long had experience on his side even when playing the game to his disadvantage but also showed Harimotos mental game in playing out deuces and being confident in his aggressive backhand point winners. Throughout the sets notice how Ma Long keeps feeding shots into Harimoto's forehand side. Harimoto has a weaker forehand and his arsenal there is limited. He has an amazing forehand flip but it is apparent that this is not his strongest suit as he misses quite a few of those shots while other flips were spinny and fast. Also note how amazing Ma Long is at the last 2 sets of the game when he is in the zone and has amazing reaction and footwork to return the forehand flip Shots. Anyway, while Harimoto uses forehand flips to generate fast points now and then when he feels comfortable for the ball, it clearly isnt his standard move. Other than forehand flips, Harimoto uses his surprise backhand by turning his body and wrist. He won quite a few quick points early with that since it was surprising but it lost its magic in later sets since the shots consistently went into Ma Long's backhand by virtue of the limited wrist space. Other than the 2 moves mentioned above, Harimoto uses cuts and pushes to control the game if he does not feel confident about attacking. This is a good strategy to win points consistently but not against the highest levels of play and definitely not against Ma Long who uses the same control to set up his forehand flips and rallies. Unfortunately for Harimoto, Ma Long's arsenal in attacking in a steady no surprise game play was wider than Harimoto giving Ma Long the advantage. This match shows Harimoto's amazing mental game and arsenal of surprising quick points but it also shows his weaknesses when forced to play consistently into his forehand area. the difference became more obvious as the game wore on and harimoto realizes Ma Long is serving into his forehand and he has to concentrate on playing the forehand game (not his best forte) this allowed Ma Long to sneak in surprisingly aggressive shots to Harimoto's backhand when he wasnt expecting it. Harimoto has to both come up w a game plan to play the game into his backhand like Fan Zhen Dong and also shore up his forehand weaknesses so that it will not impede his game tempo.

Going back to this SF after watching the not so thrilling match between Ma Long VS Lin Gaoyuan in the final. Damn Tomokazu Harimoto give a better resistant compared to Lin Gaoyuan.
