- Rajendra conducted the most striking military exploit after his accession in 1023 by his expedition to northern India.
- He led the expedition up to the Godavari river and asked his general to continue beyond that place. The Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple was built to commemorate his victories in North India.
- He defeated all these kingdoms Vengi, Kalinga, Odda, Bengal (Pala dynasty) culminating with their arrival at the Ganga river.
- Gangaikonda Cholapuram, and the CholaGangam Lake (now Ponneri Lake), which Rajendra had dug and sanctified with water from the Ganga.
- Rajendra also led naval operations against the SriVijaya Empire in Indonesia. Sri Vijaya was a prominent maritime state in Southeast Asia from around 700 to 1300. Rajendra also conquered the Kedah kingdom in Malaysia, which was under the influence of Sri Vijaya.

The Chola Sea was known as Kalinga Mahodadhi, Dadhi means sea in pure Odia language. Then with British influence and Bengali treachery, it came to be known as Bangoposagar meaning "sea of Bengal" and later "Bay of Bengal" as Bengalis were initially the most loyal and efficient stooges of the British. About the Chola invasion of Odisha, it took many months for Kalinga king Indrarathadeva, who had himself usurped the throne then ( Northern Odia kingdom), to be subdued. Cholas took the help of Kosala( western Odia kingdom) along with Chalukya ( Telugu) as well as Chandra dynasty( Bengali dynasty of South Bengal). The funny thing is, Chandra dynasty of Bengal was troubled by the military prowess of Somavansi dynasty of Odisha, so they supported the Cholas not knowing they would be attacked later on. Moreover, Kalinga broke up from being a vassal to an independent Odia kingdom only after 5-10 years and Devendravarman deva from Odisha defeated Chola dynasty and took Raja Sundari, a Chola princess as his wife from her father Kulottunga 1.

In fact, she missed up the true tank where Ganges water was poured by the Cholas. The satellite view she shows is neither the temple tank near the Brihadishvara Temple of Gangaikondacholapuram, nor the Ponneri, or Pulicat Lagoon which is between Chennai and Andhra. I think she searched the name "Ponneri Lake" in Maps, and it showed the first random occurrence, which is an ancient tank currently eaten by land conversion and buildings, but which is not the Ponneri Tank attached to the Gangaikondacholapuram temple, and well not the Pulicat Lake, which is immense.

BS.... Bengal was not under Chola rule.. Cholas attacked Bengal, raided and went back.. They were successful for a breif period because Emperor of Bengal, MAHIPALA was busy defending Varanasi from Ghaznavid invasions.... Apart from dominance in the Bay of Bengal in cladsical period, It was Bengali Navy which had again conquered and reclaimed Bay of Bengal, testified by the conquer of Arakan in Myanmar by King Pratapaditya of Bengal around 15th century who had also wiped out Pirates from BANGOPASAGAR which opened trade routes to Bengal, from whence Portugese, Dutch, French used to come for Trade in Bengal, making Bengal the richest country to trade with for European countries... It was again the dominance of Bengal in this region of sea in 15th century, why Europeans began using the name of Bay of Bengal from Bengali translation BANGOPASAGAR. Chola Sea is what only modern Tamil Nationalists claim to lionise their heritage, its not refered as Chola sea in any ancinet map.

Naah.. it was all conquered by cholas.. kalinga was the name of the region just like Andhra.. the local rulers in that region later became the Kalinga dynasty (only in our history books they were labelled as such). Ashoka killed more than 3,00,000 people from his region who refused Buddhism and prakriti.. it was tamil kings who saved this region from those atrocities.. Itna ghai math kar gyaan dene k liye.. pehle khud history pad le.. Yeh ganga ka paani chola ne us pal dynasty k raja ko sir pe carry karne lagaya tha.. paani k liye mana kiya tha madarjaat.. laude laga diye sbke.. history hai..lol

Lol, kuch v 😂,Bay of Bengal is not only limited to orissa. It was called with different names in different parts of ancient India . The same Odia people used to call it Mahodadhi, some people used to call it vanga sagar ,some Tamil used to call it kezhai kadal. I myself belong to Kalinga caste and not everyone calls the seas with the same name even in ancient India..

*And fyi, Bay of Bengal wasnt called CHOLA sea... Since ancient times, it was called BANGOPASAGAR.... meaning Upasagar of Bengal... Maybe if Indian Govt was a little less insecure of Bengal and Bengalies u would learn about the history of dominance that Bengalies had as maritime naval trade and dominance since time of Alexander.* Bengalies had conquered and colonised Sri Lanka, using Navy, long before Cholas invaded and put Tamils there.

Rajaraja Chola' s elder son was Karikalan who died mysteriously. This led to sitaution of civil war in the Chola Kingdom. Please watch the movie Ponian Selvan or read the novel. Ponian means Kaveri and Selvan means son. Rajendra Chola was the Son of Ponian. The movie was based on the novel with the same name. The younger brother of Karikalan later becomes Rajendra Chola. Rajendra Chola was such a visionary that to prevent any kind of civil war in the Chola kingdom, he paved the way for his uncle Uttama Chola to become the Chola supreme. Later Rajendra Chola under his reign took the Kingdom to further new heights.
