Very Thorough!… I'm enjoying mine, even though it's pitched as a beginners camera, I'm finding it is a godsend. Initially I got is for street photography, but I've tried it out in events with the EF adapter and it slays!… I left my 5D2 at home, shot just with the M50, and the quality is superb. It takes a bit of getting used to, using the EVF and not seeing the flash! which is a bit weird. On the Street, silent mode it actually silent, (once you find where it's hidden in the menu) and the autofocus is superfast. Sometimes, I've found the EVF takes a second or too to come up from sleep in eco mode, but the camera still fires and takes the picture irrespective which is great. Night images are clean, shot some with a 70-200 f2.8 with the EF adapter, I'm absolutely loving the vibrant colours, the weight and as a result, this camera. Only downside so far is the battery. Having said that, It's teaching me to pace myself with just one battery, particularly on the street. It's like having one role of film; you got to make every shot count. I'm considering getting rid of my 5D, 7D, and 70D's…

Life & Times of a MultipleMediaManager™ is the image quality close to the 5d m2?
@lifetimesofamultiplemediam10036 жыл бұрын
Dodi, I think the image quality is better than the 5d mk2. Having said that, I've decided to keep the 5D2, for events, as the battery life on it is way better than the M50. I'm learning that you really need an arsenal of cameras in order to get the best all round. M50 for street photography, 5D2 for events, 7D for wildlife and sports, and 70d for video… You can get all those bodies for around £1500. I'm still after a 6D2, as I love full frame, and the lens selection it offers. Prices on the 6D2 seem to keep falling as people slay it online. That's good for me, I'll probably trade-in one of my 70d's to get it, and my line-up will be complete.

I bought this camera for a small stills camera to go along with my A7RII.. i love using the M50 so much I sold my A7RII before it lost anymore value. I canon is coming out with a full frame mirrorless soon which I will buy. I love the color it produces in raw and the picture quality is excellent for a crop sensor. Focus and Tracking is good too. Eye focus works great too. I sometimes will have to upload pics to my phone instantly to send to IG or FB. The colors are spot on and none of my Sony’s could ever get color right straight out of camera. So I always had to play with them in raw on my computer just to send to social media. This’s M50 is a huge time saver for that. For 629 body only it is Canons best crop sensor body for taking pics.

Hi Maarten, I am considering the m50 or the 77d. I prefer the m50 because I see mirrorless as the future, but the lack of lens is troubling. The 77d however has a wide variety of lens available. What do you recommend?
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
I would not choose a mirrorless camera for that reason - however, if the reason is weight/size, or that you shoot more video than stills, mirrorless can be a better choice. If you are concerned about lens selection and quality, I'd pick the 77D.

Yes, about the same, image quality is more dependent on lenses, which you prefer is likely based on your familiarity with the system or the availability of a specific feature.

Mr. Heilbron, I just want to thank you for your honest reviews on all these cameras, specially the M50. I have noticed Canon has a Marketing machine that owns a lot of these so called camera experts. Keep up your great reviews, sir!!!

Thanks for the kind words. Honesty is the best policy. However, Canon's Canadian media relations isn't being very responsive in trying to arrange a loan of the EOS R ... is there a correlation?
@marcinti95095 жыл бұрын
Oh no, Mr. Heilbron, there is not relation what so ever. It is just an observation of my after leaning more about different cameras and watching different reviews, specially on Canons. I think Canons are great cameras yet I find most reviews in KZbin a bit overlooking shortcomings of these Canon cameras. In all fairness as it is said, "there is no perfect camera" ...yet lets be objective and try to provide the whole picture.

Hi Maarten thanks for this review. I've been considering this as a replacement for my M3. Just want to ask, I heard it's possible to extract 8MP images from the 4K video, is this true? I tried this feature (4K Photo) with the FZ1000, and I love it. But due to the small sensor, I was not impressed with the Panasonic's overall image quality. Having that feature on the M50 would make me consider it even more.

Always nice to have your comments on my videos - thank you for your kind words. If there is an in-camera way to extract stills from a video, I haven't found it. I wouldn't put a great deal of value in that feature, as the appropriate shutter for video (1/60) rarely yields good stills.

Hi Maarten. Cheers for the video. Very informative and helpful. I'm going to buy the M50 (body only). I'm currently undecided on which lens I'll buy for it. It's between the 10-18 and the 11-22. I'm aware that the 10-18 would require an adaptor which will cost extra. But the 11-22 is more expensive than the 10-18. Ultimately the pricing works out exactly the same (the adaptor + the 10-18 costs the same as the 11-22 alone). I plan to shoot the majority of my videos indoors (either with natural light from the window or with light from soft boxes). Which of the two lenses would you recommend? Do you know if there's much difference between the quality? I read somewhere that the 10-18 performs better for indoor shooting as the 11-22 doesn't do so well in low light....Any thoughts would be much appreciated!
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
I would suggest that you would get better performance from a native lens, particularly for video. I haven't had the opportunity to compare side by side - so can't really provide much guidance.

Without a better understanding of your style, needs and intentions it's not possible to suggest which is better for you. They are both fine cameras that create high quality images. If there's an edge, I'd give it to Sony that has a better selection of higher quality native lenses.

Want to tell you my experience with the M50: Handling was good and simple by touchscreen and fully tilting screen. Very nice! It´s the way to make it simple in use per se in general that was great. For me it was a sympathic camera - easy to use. "Plasticfeeling" was not so bad. Cropfactor in video - you know before. Dualautofocus was great. Only one big thing to complain: the sharpeness!!! A l l my pictures are looking a little bit unsharp/"squishy". Equal which aperture/time I used. Yes, it could be the lense. Other little problems: it always took a little bit to long to shoot a picture because of the delayed trigger/shutter reaction. Only one dialwheel - menue navigation by touch took often a little bit to much steps/time. So in conclusion I sent the M50 back.In my experience the sharpeness problem was to big. Feeling pity for that - because I liked the idea. It were a great travelcamera...so this is no critic of your video / only another personal rating.

@@MaartenHeilbron I apologize for putting your last comment to the test. I have a couple more general camera questions. Is there a significant difference between micro 4/3 image quality and that of apsc size sensors? I guess what I mean is will a hobbyist be satisfied with 4/3? How many megapixels is enough? Is there really a significant difference between 16 and say 24? I promise that these will be my last questions. I would ask the local camera store but as you know I can't right now and they might point me to the more expensive models as they are want to do.
@MaartenHeilbron4 жыл бұрын
@@delplaya5 Happy to answer all civil and relevant questions. The significance of the difference depends on your needs, your intentions and your perception of quality. There is a difference, but it's not one that matters to most. Where you will see a difference will depend, to a certain extent on your subjects and your lenses. A pleasant out of focus background is sensor dependent - large sensors are better for this purpose. For megapixels, I would suggest that 16Mp is the minimum - but, depending on the size of the sensor, you may get better results with more. The size of the pixels can be as important as the number - packing a large number of tiny pixels onto a smaller sensor means that they don't get very much light.

Great video as always. No mention of the massive 4K crop?
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
Oh dear ... I'll start to include crops again. I'm just really not certain - particularly in a camera like this - that it matters to anyone. I'm providing the benefit of the doubt, as I imagine it's done to make a better match of sensor pixels to the 4K resolution to reduce artifacts. I also overlooked that 4K is only available in movie mode - that was a more significant factor in my mind - I just didn't want to get bogged in trivial details.
