Maastricht is the capital of Limburg, the most southern province in the Netherlands. An ancient city in the valley of the river Maas, situated next to Germany and Belgium. The French and Roman influences are still found in this romantic surrounding. Making this a warm place to stay with friends, where you easily meet colleagues in the city after work, study or a conference.

This film, for me, is pure poetry.. It captures this magical "Je ne sais quoi" that makes Maastricht such a special place in the Netherlands. It's a city you cannot help falling in love with when you first see it and later experience it. As the film so beautifully shows, it's about these unique moments and emotions, and this genuine communion you feel with the city, because of its past, its people and because of the way it grips you... All of this makes you want to be part of its future.

But it is even more important for the residence to not only know about the other side but truly realize the other side. Problems in education, both low and high, and in a lot of other areas. Luckily there are people starting to sprout out and engage a new era which centers around innovation communities. It takes time, and guts, but it can happen.

Actually I don't, because that is a different subject. This video is about (an idealized image of) Maastricht. It's a pretty obvious thing to point out that such an idealized image is not "true", but as few other people did that, it was important.

This video does not change the fact that there are people in this city undermining alternative and student culture. Or that quite a number of property owners rather sit on their office space, instead of renting it out at reasonable prices. Despite >50% unoccupied space, they don't adapt to the current economy. Or that international students don't learn Dutch and nobody seems really interested in keeping them around here either. Like it or not, Maastricht runs into some big problems right now!
