De titel van de oratie is: "Digitalisation and EU fundamental rights: the good, the bad and the opaque"
The inaugural lecture will journey into the heart of generative artificial intelligence, casting light on its profound impact on the rights, recognized under the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. It will invite us to think about how high-risk AI systems as defined in the new AI Act interact with selected fundamental rights.
Structured to guide us through the safeguards offered by the AI Act and GDPR, the lecture will reveal how the European regulation attempts to protect individuals against the potential harms of automated decision-making. The lecture will briefly delve into the inner workings of the AI, peeling back the layers of black-box systems to discuss the promise of explainable AI. Against this evolving backdrop, the lecture will highlight the remedies available to individuals that ensure the protection of human rights in a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence. It will also bring to light new landmark cases from the CJEU, such as SCHUFA and Dun & Bradstreet Austria, prompting us to reconsider transparency and data rights in the age of intelligent algorithms.
