Just an update that this trick will work in macOS 11 Big Sur. However, you will need the Big Sur specific version of Onyx! Tested on an M1 Mac mini.

You can remove the gatekeeper check for specific VSTs. I would not recommend turning gatekeeper off completely since that opens up for (accidentally) running any binary you've downloaded from the internet.

i actually turned gatekeeper off and loaded up all my vst's which i was having issues with, 90% of them opened up with no issue. and then i turned gatekeeper back on and hey presto they all work. hope this helps guys and girls

I highly doubt it. It's an OS-level change that I don't think even a third party developer could revert. Once Apple moves on from something, it's pretty much for good. If you need 32-bit plugin support, either stay on Mojave or move to another OS that supports 32-bit plugins.

How about removing write permission to usr/lib folderto place lib files into it for certain plugins in catalina? Does anyone know how to do this in catalina??

I haven't tried it on Big Sur or an M1 machine for that matter. Onyx exists for Big Sur though so I imagine you would be able to disable gatekeeper. Keep in mind there might be other incompatibilities besides just gatekeeper though depending on the plugin.

would 32lives work if you did this solution? I see that you got waves 9 to work but honestly I have way too many plugins to consider like nexus3,sylenth,soundtoys and many others

I wouldn't know about 32lives. They say explicitly on their front page that they are not compatible with Catalina. That makes sense to me since Apple broke compatibility with all 32-bit software in Catalina. My advice to you is to stay where you are at if you rely on those plugins, or find suitable replacements/upgrades if you want to use the latest macOS.
