In the 1960s, the United States was undergoing tremendous change, including through pushes to expand pathways for students of color to access higher education. In response to campus advocacy, Macalester launched the Expanded Educational Opportunities program in 1968-and the next year, the college welcomed seventy-five first-year students from historically underrepresented backgrounds, a group that increased the number of students of color from two percent of the student body to fifteen percent. From 1969 through the early '80s, the program shaped Macalester, and today, many EEO alumni continue to lead as engaged members of the Mac community. In this video, part of a year-long series in celebration of our sesquicentennial, four EEO alumni-Milton DeJesus ’72, Broderick Grubb ’73, Karol Parker ’73, and Barbara Sanders ’73-reflect on their experiences, and the program's enduring legacy.
