@K_F_fox2 жыл бұрын
I've been pondering the question you ask at 37 minutes in, because it seems more like Greek philosophical thought that something must be Good because it's True, and it turns out it *is* Greek. Arthur Holmes has a History of Philosophy where he talks about Aristotle's conception of God, and states that to not only Aristotle but to many other Greeks of that era, "That which is metaphysically good is morally good." (kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIC1lIB-ot1ppaM) I don't think Shakespeare believes that himself, because of how Macbeth later praises "the best of the cut-throats," but on the other hand there's the story of when Krishna tells Arjuna to fight, because it's Arjuna's metaphysical duty as his metaphysical goodness as a killer and his moral goodness as a killer are one in the same. Shakespeare appears to be both referencing Classical themes and criticizing them.
@NibblePop2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Indeed. In a way, the word good has a mass appeal, just like God. Good is never a private matter. Shakespeare celebrated the individual and the particular, hence, for him, good is a general abstraction that has far less appeal than individual desire, perception, perspective and understanding.

Hmmm. Killing *swine* and wanting to eat some chestnuts that are from a *sailor's* wife. I'm thinking this could be a reference to Circe, who turned Odysseus's crew into pigs?
@NibblePop2 жыл бұрын
I really thought so too!!!!
@K_F_fox2 жыл бұрын
@@NibblePop There's defiantly something Classical going on. I didn't notice it, because of the rhyme scheme being so prominent, but "after the battle's *lost and won* "is almost certainly a reference to Battle of Pteria, where the Oracle told King Croesus that if he crossed the Halys river that "a great empire will be destroyed." It was indeed a true prophecy, but Croesus never considered it wouldn't be Persia.

Ma'am I want to know one thing. I am very very confused about it. Was Macdonwald the Thane of Cawdor? In Act 1 Sc ii, it is said that Macbeth killed Macdonwald in the battle. But in Act 1 Sc iii, Macbeth asks how can he be Thane of Cawdor because the Thane of Cawdor is still alive? So are they two different men? Ma'am pls answer my query.

Ma'am is the story told by witches is very important or it was just a part of it
@NibblePop3 жыл бұрын
The story is not important for itself. But it has symbolic importance. You see, this story presents the true nature of the witches, that they don't care about humans, they only wish to torment them and it also shows that any person, who is the target of the witches , suffers and eventually gets isolated from rest of the world.
