The Apple business model is that you are paying for intellectual property rights but with the cheapest components so that when your product fails and is taken to the "genius" bar you are told that the main board needs to be replaced at a price that will just make you buy a whole new product with the "latest" features, I call it the "extended bait and switch scam".

This one is reminiscent of Louis's 'Leaning Tower of Backlight' video where he stacked caps on top of each other due to a large shorted hole in the board. Interesting video, as although Sorin approaches repair from a different perspective to Louis, both hold the same view that Apple quality control and design leave much to be desired.

Its not crap...for repairers you can make more money fixing macs than with pc laptops. I know that from experience. Once you master a method and follow it almost everything becomes easier to solve. Nothing is difficult if you start from the beginning. Alot of us watching sorin dont even know the basics of electronics. Unless we master that first whatever Sorin tells us wont make alot of sense. Even Sorin himself confuses component names and doesnt correctly name them but because he is very skilled it doesnt matter but for those watching the video it can create bad habits.

Sorin, the mac usb charger works like this: it usually sends 5V to avoid to burn usb powered things an idiot could connect, like a phone. When you connect it to a macbook the smc sends a specific signal on the data pins so the charger could pass 20V like a normal charger.

Sorin Smd multilayer capacitors are very unreliable, i think they are just too fragile and layers crack from stress/vibration/heat cycles and become shorted. Cost has nothing to do with it, just a bad idea. Louis rossmann has found lots of shorted caps in the macbooks he repairs.

Louis Rossmann teaches us to always look at the board first for any obvious faults...then go through the power rails and find out which one is missing...yes finding the ampere using your power supply can guide u roughly but with macs you need to manufacture the cable first to do this. The only complaint i have with your methods is that you skip around alot..there is no set method you follow...i have watched most of your pc laptop repairs and i think you are a very knowledgeable person..but i think thats the problem..you know your stuff but creating a consistant method like louis does would really help solve issues for your viewers..to date only a handful of channels out there repairing laptops actually go through the process systematically. The main issue is that they are in hindi and not in english. I know that if you do create a logical step by step method like louis does your channel would grow so fast..i admire your skillset..without any schematics..i dont think louis could do what you can without schematics.

58:18 Sorin please look at the schematic. I will give you one tip. On the apple schematics only, when you see the word "critical" above any component - that is means you HAVE TO replace it, and it is wrong to remove it and skip it. That component must be there and It must have the same parameters - not something around or familiar to it, but exactly the same resistance/capacity/etc. I know what you are always saying "oh, that cap is not necessary, there is another one next to it, it will be fine, trust me, don't worry" and yes you have right almost in all cases, but NOT here in apple, The word "critical" means it is very important. Ok laptop is working fine now without that cap, fine, but working laptop doesn't mean it is 100% ok. I bet, that cap is for removing noise / for filtering voltage to prevent to hang-up that ic. Probably in rare cases (one for some time) bad thing will happen. Almost all of components on the board are there because "laptop need them" to "coming on" and working fine, BUT rest of the components are there to PREVENT rare situation, which you will never be able to reproduce in one minute of your tests on the bench. Apple can even slow down, and behave like a shit slow/weak laptop, when it detects any failure of his sensors - and how can you detect it? It for you, the job is finish when you see fan spin or apple logo on the screen? So you are risky to skip word critical in apple (even on the caps). For the rest of the components and other laptops (pc-ones) that is fine.
@piernov
@piernov 5 жыл бұрын
The electronics behind an Apple laptop and another branded laptop is no different. Critical doesn't mean it'll definitely not work without it. You're right at saying it may not work, and you may not trigger the failure by a simple bench test though. And it may even work without any issue at all, but not pass EMI (or ESD if it was another component) certification. I will also argue that when you're working on a $850 board it is preferable to do the best job possible. But again, doesn't mean it'll definitely cause an issue on Apple laptops and not other brands. And it doesn't have to be the exact same component either.
@Radek__
@Radek__ 5 жыл бұрын
@@piernov you miss the point dude. I've said already that it could work without critical component. The thing is - you, I and Sorin are not engineers of this board. We can assume, we can recognize familiar components or groups of them or parts of power supplies but please do not try to be father of apple or PC board. We all do not know all reasons of all used components. what updates to newest version they did, why this or that component now is critical. We don't speak here what is possible what is not. I understand that sometimes Sorin remove bad cap and skip it / leave it because he doesn't have a time or detailed parameters. But my God do not try to force that idea that we can always skip then all, especially when word critical is on the schematic. please cut that bullshit about that the reason of critical is esd.

Careless repairs leads to high potential of angry returning customers with new random issues on their laptops (digital chips are very sensible for voltage filtering issues like noise or unexpected voltage drops under load, or can cause hard resets … for that purpose capacitors are installed). In addition, Sorin doesn't even care if the diodes are Si/Ge (different voltage drop is critical at 3.3v) Zener or schotky … The rule here is : make it work at near zero costs (component scrapping), get the money and hope for the best. I'm totally fine with doing this kind of crappy job at home for oneself taking all the risks but this guy runs a shop and does it professionally which is imho unacceptable !!
@pldaniels
@pldaniels 5 жыл бұрын
eeeeeeh.... realistically, the "critical" designation on those schematics is likely more abused than people realise, a bit like 'volaltile' in C code; it gets used when unsure more than anything else. Most designers putting together these modules are just cut-pasting from prior designs. The importance of a given cap on a rail line likely is vastly overstated. Of course, if it's something like an RC timing circuit or maybe a band pass/cut filter, then it's a little more important. Caps on supply rails, are for the most part slapped on without much care; usually you just run a few decades to cover your EMI/EMF compliance and hopefully stop transient issues, but I doubt many, if any, of the designers actually sit down and calculate the required capacitance on those lines; they're engineers, which means if it fails the first time, they double it up and try again. I'm an EE.
