It seems the Samsung 970 Evo is slowly fading from the market as it is being replaced by its successor, the 980 Here's a list of alternative ssds: Crucial P2 M.2 geni.us/ivge Adata XPG SX8200 Pro geni.us/WfqT Samsung 980 geni.us/59tW The options above have successfully been used for this upgrade according to the adapter's amazon listing, but kindly double-check before buying. Happy upgrading!

This is the second time I have gone through this process. Once when I bought the MacBook and I wanted to start from scratch. And then recently using this video as a tutorial. Both times I had no issues. I believe the process will be the same, if you feel more comfortable booting through Catalina.

I struggled trying to get my new Samsung 980 SSD with cheap adapters (twice) and then one Sintech adapter. The mac would not recognize the one I put it in with the adapter for some reason. I am not a Mac person, I have always used windows so I had no idea that there was an operating system upgrade that added firmware support for NVMe drives. The one I was trying to upgrade had Sierra on it and I couldn't figure it out for days until I found this video. Thank you so much for pointing out the exact process and the fact you need high sierra or better. After all the hard drive not found headache, I ended up just upgrading to Catalina and I hope the person I upgraded it for will be happy with that. Cheers mate.

@@earlmalaki Yes it is possible, with this model anyway to upgrade to 2TB (this particular Macbook features PCIe 3.0 x 4 not sure if that makes a difference beyond speed). I post reply as I didn't find anybody trying 2TB drives but I wanted to let people know it is possible at least with this combination of products. There are faster drives but I picked the P2 due to it's power consumption ratings. I use my laptop for music production and also design work, both these practices are very drive space hungry so that is why I need the 2TB.

@@thelateraledge that's awesome. I agree about power consumption -- the balance between that, thermals, performance, and stability should be considered when picking an SSD to use for these upgrades. I was too late to discover the P2 but I've read that it's a great SSD!

This was the help I needed. An additional post clarified "restore" will not see the NVMe in utility and it will only be seen with the USB boot image. I though there was something wrong with the drive or adaptor. Providing the terminal code to make the USB bootable was perfect. I'm not a programmer, so this is what I needed. Hi Earl, I upgraded my 15" MacBook Pro (mid 2015). Followed your instructions and everything went perfectly, Thank You! Here's the problem, every so often, the screen will go black. If it happens when I'm at the computer, tapping the brightness button, space bar or track pad once or twice brings it back instantly and everything continues to work fine. Sometimes, it happens when I'm not at the computer (I dim the screen down completely if I'm gone for long). When I come back and press the brightness button, nothing happens and the screen stays black. I found that pressing the power button for a couple of seconds and releasing brings everything back, no startup sound so it did not shut down. Other than that, everything works perfectly, but when this happens, the computer will have disconnected itself from everything, the network, bluetooth, and if there was an external connected, a message that the disk was not ejected properly will show. Online research has someone saying that 1TB ssd's are problematic, Apple support said that the battery was the issue because it was not repaired by Apple. I think it could a hibernation issue relating to any of the 3 parts I changed, but I’m guessing. This is what I used, SSD: Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB NVMe M.2 Internal SSD (MZ-V7S1T0/AM) [Canada Version]; Adapter: Sintech NGFF M.2 nVME SSD Adapter Card for Upgrade 2013-2015 Year Macs; and Battery: TIIANTE 99.5Wh A1618 Laptop Battery Replacement for MacBook Pro 15 inch A1398 Retina(2015 Version). I bought everything from Amazon .ca. Except for the black-outs. The upgrades are amazing. I run Time Machine consistently, just in case the black screen does not go away. Any advice would be much appreciated.
@earlmalaki
@earlmalaki 3 жыл бұрын
My first guess is hibernation issue too. The 970 Evo *Plus* is listed as not supported on the Sintech adapter details. But I think I've read that it can still work by changing the hibernation mode of the macbook. The command is something along the lines of "sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 25", 25 being the hibernation mode. Kindly verify this command first and check if 25 is the correct mode for your machine. If possible, it might be best to return the Evo Plus and get an Evo only 970 just to be sure

@@DrDuckk what’s up! So I just did it on the latest that I had, but to my knowledge you can’t upgrade OS on a non original ssd? Not sure if that’s correct but I’d say make sure you are fully upgraded to latest possible OS before you change your ssd. Probably easier You didn’t ask but In terms of the SSD itself. For my 2015 MBP retina 13”, I originally got the Samsung evo 970 plus but I noticed some issues like heating etc. also when the laptop battery dies it would boot up a fresh restart, unlike resuming from your latest apps opened whilst your laptop died, which I didn’t really like. It also didn’t last too long either, couple hours. (Samsung issue apparently) although I installed the new battery at the exact same time. I eventually switched out for Hynix p31 gold and it’s much better. As for the battery issue I had to go for the ssdPmEnabler and my battery lasts significantly longer than the original few hours only with the Samsung. I would suggest looking at the temperatures of your laptop prior to upgrading your ssd. I feel like mine was slightly hotter to the touch as I didn’t notice and warmth beforehand Let me know if you have any other questions 😂

I think you mean downgrade? Catalina and newer versions won't work with 32 bit software, this means that you will have to upgrade all your software to 64 bit versions. Mojave and older OS versions work with 32 bit apps. When I upgraded my SSD, I installed Big Sur and the only reason I switched back to Mojave was because most of my software would not work and I didn't want to replace any of it. Hope this helps.

I wish to upgrade my late 2013 MBP to the Samsung 970 EVO 1TB. However it seems that this particular Samsung SSD Model is no longer available and I can’t really find it anywhere locally (discontinued)? I managed to find one in Amazon (Samsung 970 EVO) but when it was delivered to me it was the Samsung 970 EVO Plus! I did not return the item back to Amazon as I reckon they will not have the Samsung 970 EVO as well. I read from other forum that this Samsung 970 EVO Plus has some issue with sleep/wake and panic attack issues on Mac but I assumed this was due to some compatibility issue with an older firmware? The Samsung 970 EVO Plus that I’m currently holding has a manufactured date of 2021 06 20. So I assumed the firmware should be the latest and there is no need for me to update the firmware? My question is if I can use this Samsung 970 EVO Plus for the upgrade and do “exactly” what you have done and not face issue once it is up and running?
@earlmalaki
@earlmalaki 3 жыл бұрын
According to Sintech, the 970 Evo Plus will work if it is updated to the latest firmware. Given yours is recently manufactured, there's a high chance it'll work right away. If not, you will need to update its firmware first.

I am thinking of upgrading the SSD an old Macbook Air 2015. I know that the Macbook will only accept Catalina. Since you have to make a bootable OS on a thumb drive when installing the new SSD, I am curious to know whether you can put the most recent MacOS (which is currently Sonoma) on the thumb drive and make the old Macbook run it on start up - or if you have to choose an OS you know will work with the model (and then find hacks to upgrade it once set up). Anyone know?

Hi Earl - fantastic video. I have followed your advise but ran into a problem. When I got to Step 5 'Install macOS on the new SSD', Disk Utility did not show the newly installed SSD; it only showed the external hard-drive that has the macOS bootable installer on it and Disk Utility showed this drive as 'Locked'. FYI, I have a mid-2014, 13" Macbook Pro and I installed a Samsung 980 Pro, PCle 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD together with a Sintech NGFF M.2 nVME SSD Adapter Card for Upgrade 2013-2015 Year Macs(Not Fit Early 2013 MacBook Pro) (Black). Hi there! Thanks for the helpful set up video. I was able to get everything set up back in December of 2021 and had been using my MacBook perfectly fine. Today I had my laptop unplugged and the battery died at about 50%. Strangely though, after charging my MacBook up, it looks like the drive/computer factory reset and macOS is no longer installed… has anyone else run into this issue? Not too worried about getting everything set up again, but wanted to know if this is a common issue I should watch out for when having my laptop unplugged/ losing power.

I have a macbook air mid 2013 and it is on macOS Sierra Version 10.12.6 I have everything stock up until this point and I wanted to upgrade the storage to a 1 tb ssd which i have already bought. now the adapter is about to arrive in a few days but what got me thinking is the macOS that I needed to be in... Do I need to upgrade to macOS High Sierra or is Sierra (10.12.6) good enough? I am also planning on upgrading to Big Sur (only reason for this giant upgrade is that I need to run certain programs but there's a long story to why I won't just buy a higher macbook so I have to make use of what I have right now..) so I can run the programs that can't run on the Sierra 10.12.6. Side Questions: 1.) is Big Sur a bad OS to run on a Mid 2013 Macbook Air (Baseline model: 1.3 GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 5000 1536 MB) 2.) any recommendations on what model of Macbook AIR (11 inch preferably or 13 if there are no other 11 inches out there) should I buy that is good enough to run Big Sur or higher OS? Max of $270 (second hand) 3.) any recommendations on other models such as the Macbook or the Macbook Pro that I could get that is second hand, below $270, enough to run Big Sur or higher OS? I would appreciate Earl himself to reply, and I would also appreciate others to reply as well if they know something. (trying to learn mac too since im a full Windows guy)

Hey there. 980 is relatively new so I haven't read much about it being used for MacBook upgrades. It's safe to stick with the common SSDs that people have used specific to your MacBook to avoid problems. But yes if 980 turns out to be not compatible, you can still use it as external. Make sure to buy a fast NVME enclosure to make the most out of your SSD.

I can't speak for Monterey compatibility. However, I did upgrade this laptop (the one on the video) to Big Sur and I didn't have any problems. Always backup with time machine whenever upgrading anything just to make sure I was hesitant too a few years back when I first read about this. If I remember correctly, back then there was no Sintech or any brand that made reliable adapters so it was a little bit of hit-or-miss. Good thing now that Sintech adapters are here and so far seem to be very reliable
