Demystifying Dystonia

You did not mention trauma induced dystonia, a condition which I have developed that has dramatically changed the course of my life over the last 11 months. Unfortunately, most medical providers are unfamiliar with dystonia, and grossly unfamiliar with trauma induced dystonia. In my experience, this has resulted in countless unproductive and very often counterproductive medical consultations, inclusive of Movement Disorder clinic consultation. When a physician is unfamiliar with a condition, they tend to discount the self-reports of objective symptoms by the patient, regardless of the patients degree of education and knowledge of such condition. Such can rapidly rob one of faith in the medical system we have today. When physicians discount and/or blatantly deny the reports of the patient, neither patient nor provider outcomes can be served.

Been trying to get a diagnosis for 5 year's now. 50 or visits later and countless tests with no answers. Hundreds of spasms a day with symptoms slowy increasing over time. One day maybe I'll find a doctor who cares and knows what they're doing. I wish you all the best of luck.

If someone has cervical dystonia try to find if you have cervical instability or other structural problems in the neck. It can be cured with prolotherapy.

Dystonia foundation clearly states dystonia cannot be detected by MRI or radiology tests.

I was thankful for this video when I first found it, but find it much better to hear and see real people who have the condition. Because of this perceived need, we (my wife and I along with our family) have made many videos trying to raise awareness about dystonia. Many are not aware of the mental, social, or even physiological symptoms associated with certain forms of dystonia such as memory loss, hypersensitive hearing, or other triggers. We are hoping that with more information from real patients like me that people can get beyond merely hearing about a condition to understanding what a patient deals with in regard to physical symptoms, disability, socialization, and more. I found this video a while ago and have searched at length for videos showing actual patients, but mostly they are a few seconds long and never get into how families deal with the difficulties. So, we started making videos and opened up our lives in a very transparent way. We hope our videos are seen by others to encourage and raise awareness.

Hey, I'm Josh, 17 and I have generalized Dystonia mostly occurring in the left side of my body and sometimes my right. I feel very grateful that it doesn't effect me much in my daily life, but there has been a lot of akward moments I've had to deal with. My dystonia also seems to trigger anytime I go from 0 to 100, and sometimes I'll have an attack where it goes on for a prolonged period of time. My dystonia isn't very painful thankfully, but it is just very uncomfortable. And when it happens in both sides of my body it usually makes me fall down due to the really awkward posture it creates.

I have been diagnosed with Cervical Dystonia seven years ago and have been getting steady Boxtox treatments since with little relief from extreme muscle pulling in the back and side of my neck, When I lay down the Dystonia goes away completely, I don't get a good answer from my Neurologist how the Dystonia can shut on and off by just laying down can you relate to this ? Try to investigate if you have cervical instability. In cervical dystonia this may be the cause of it. It can be cured with prolotherapy.

i have dystonia and its super annoying we are trying so many different medication first we went to the doctor then he said to my parents its dystonia then we went to the MRI to check for tumors and now medications that are used to help Parkinson's disease and the one we are using now is working ( I have dystonia in my left leg )

Yeah I get where you're coming from. I have it in my entire right and left side of my body sometimes both (Sometimes when it's both I look like I'm flapping my arms like a chicken xD) but yeah it's annoying, hope the meds are still working.

Did he say medications, because medications can cause it too. My Dystonia is genetic
