Laurie and Margaret have always been incredibly creative. Art has been their lives and work. What Margaret says about the freedom that comes with being older is spot on. Both Margaret and Laurie truly talebted, amaaaazing women. Laurie has been an exemplar of every art there is including one she invented. Regarding Canadian artists, during the time Atwood refers to, there was the best pianist who has ever existed, Glen Gould, known for his performances of Bach’s works, but he was not limited to Bach.

Atwood is right about the future. About global warming and species extinction. What we must do now can still save our planet and the species we still have. Laurie is right about the overwhelming influence of the atomic bomb on our generation.

Brownies were only part of Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and UK Girl Guides. I don't think there were "Brownies" groups within the United States' Girl Guides organization.

We were not Girl Guides, we were Girl Scouts. And we did have brownie scouts. But, I think our brownie organization was very different than the Canadian version.

It is fairly well studied enough now to be a general truth that women do indeed get this boost of creativity, call it the mid life crisis if you will, it should be called the mid life opportunity. Take the awful caricature of the man in his sports car out of the equation, that is the dumb thing to do. If you are in a relationship you can rekindle passion and love, etc, or you can go for new partners or alone and new career driven times. There are all the options you had as a teen. That is if you have done the sensible thing and had children when you were young. We are designed to get a second lease of life at the mid point, it is as simple as that. Biology has designed an efficient system. Many women start careers after the children have grown.
