These TV movies were so weird and didn't feel like they were made by the same people as the show at all. No MacGyver theme, barely any MacGyverisms, and MacGyver is even acting out of character at times.

I agree, for the first time I was actually annoyed by his behaviour, he was pre-judgemental, impatient, defensive, petty, and had outbursts that were not like him. Like the way he was being really pushy towards that lady, before it was clear she was the villain was not good.

@@Appletree-rc9gt What's weird is I do believe the movies had the same writers and directors as the show, but it's like they wanted to make everything more cinematic so you have MacGyver acting like more of a badass. It's like when you go from Star Trek the TV series to the Star Trek movies and suddenly the characters are using profanity, firing machine guns, driving ATVs and dropping Die Hard-like one liners.

John Considine, who was the writer in this one (and also wrote a few episodes and guest starred in three), said that the higher-ups wanted this particular movie to be more adult. The first one had a bit more of a feel akin to the TV show (since it felt like episodes like Eye of Osiris due to the heavily archaeological plot), this one was different, but I still felt it was solid. Also, another thing that John said was missing from the movies was Stephen Downing, who was the series' showrunner. The baton was passed to Mike Greenburg, who was involved in the series and who John liked a lot, but he felt with Steve Downing not being involved, there was something missing. However, I think the reason why I don't find these movies all that bad compared to other revival attempts done around the same time is because despite wanting these to feel like standalone movies instead of a continuation, there is a bit of familiarity to it thanks to the musical score. Even though the Randy Edelman theme is absent, Ken Harrison brings a lot of themes he used over the course of the series in this movie, and that serves as sort of a connective tissue between the series and the movies. The theme in this scene in particular is basically the same action/suspense theme used in episodes like Passages, Strictly Business, Good Knight MacGyver and The Stringer, and there are other themes in the movie that have been used in episodes (the scene where MacGyver goes to the library has a piano cue that was also used on the episode The Madonna, and also, quite a few cues used in Lost Treasure of Atlantis are themes that can be heard in the series itself, like the main theme itself, which is actually a rearranged version of a theme that was used in Squeeze Play, where Riley does his big home run).

Just remember, revenge clouded your judgement. Also, Richard Dean Anderson is the executive producer on this TV movie and MacGyver: Lost Treasure of Atlantis released same year also.

Yes I've watched "Lost Treasure of Atlantis". I thought it was substantially better than "Trail to Doomsday" but still a little disappointing given the bigger budget TV movie format. Both movies were filmed in England and it felt to me like something was lost in translation with the British treatment of this American pop icon hero. Just one man's opinion.
