You forgot gen 1's brokenness when it came to Hyper Beam. Machamp could've been useful with Hyper Beam in gen 1 since it was physical somehow, if you faint a Pokemon when you used it you had another turn to attack. So, Machamp was useful with Hyper Beam in gen 1 thanks to Red, Blue, and Yellow's shitty programming.

I just realized that a fight of Machamp and Alakazam is similar to fight of a warrior and a pure mage in any rpg, the mage (Alakazam) can hit with very powerful long distance spells (psychic attacks), that can destroy the warrior (Machamp) if he's not able to tank them or heal himself. However, if the warrior manages to force the mage into close combat, the mage is pretty much fucked, cause even though the warrior's attacks might not be that effective compared to the magic, they still hit the mage good cause of his weak physical defense and his weak physical body.
