Another excellent one. My Father used to work in Coates Brothers, the large Ink and Dye factory in Waterloo and I believe the railway ran along side the factory but was never served by it

I remember catching the bus from Newport to Ystrad Mynach. I always felt when I used to see the railway lines at Rhiwderin, near Near Newport would make a nice train adventure

Nice well-researched video. I once walked part of the old Machen line (2008 IIRC) towards Caerphilly from the Quarry, in the end the undergrowth curbed efforts but the line was in place up to a point! Much further along the old line nearer Brecon, you may find Torpantau and the surrounding area interesting; I walked the tunnel some years back, but it's often waterlogged, but both portals are in place.

Hi Bob. just discovered your channel . very well researched and presented, I've learnt a lot. one minor point, the tramroad mentioned @1m 37 secs that the B and M took over was not the Sirhowy but rather the "rumney railway"--not to be confused with the Rhymney Railway. It all gets rather complicated in South wales !

Thanks. I have found so much out after I make these videos but KZbin won't allow an edit. You are right about it being the rumney railway tramway, I was getting my tramways mixed up. I am planning to look at the Sirhowy one day as it's where I spent chunks on my childhood school holidays.

Excellent video. I have walked part of the trail by the forge and viaduct 10 years ago, and other parts of the area, but didn't know about the incline so I will have to make a return visit. I also clambered down to Fountain Bridge halt about 25 years ago - unfortunately I don't have any photos though.

A real odd situation to have a line just operating in one direction. Is there anything to see at Fountain Bridge?

@@bobsrailrelics It was overgrown but I found the remains of a wooden box with ballast in it that I had read about in a book with 'then and now' photos but not much else as I recall

Great video mate, walked the trail during the summer lockdown last year, did the viaduct and embankment, also walked from trethomas to machen along the line, good to see old signals still in place, saw the three bridges near old machen station, great stuff.

That's on my to do list at some point. Alway good to find old signals. Thanks for your comments.
