Yall be saying this ain't effective. If u live in southeast countries like malaysia, indonesia, brunei and so on like I do then you'll see this actually do works. You don't mess with the people who has learned it. Silat has many types, this is just one of them. Each countries have different types of silat, with Maul here teaching one from Brunei. It has been passed down from one generation to another, used in the olden days for the users to kill their enemies for the sake of protecting families and territory. Go and challenge a silat practitioner, or better yet a master to a duel and see for yourself. He or she could be 60 and still beat your ass. Even a kid who learned silat is intimidating enough.

I love Silat but still wanna know how effective this could be , cause in real life the hand waving and slices motion would not be easy to track so it would be so hard or nearly impossible to execute these fancy moves or even to grab their hands , we may also consider that ennemies could have different strenght and body size

Nope it doesn't work. A skilled weapon wielder knows how to control the distance and the silat exponent is just going to get his hands cut. HEMA has plenty of disarm techniques as well, and they basically prescribe running from a non-dagger weapon as you just plain die. Don't end up being exposed as a fake like the Chinese traditional masters.

People seem to forget and like to turn off their brain in the comment section that this is merely a demonstration and explanation of the movement, there's no fixed technique in Silat, merely a mindset. People who only just seen maul stuff and didn't think for a second what is maul doing, why the art is it is what is, what's the history of the art would write something stupid. But someone who have attend his seminar (under his teaching or someone else that Maul himself agreed to instruct) decent amount of time or watch a lot of his video and put an effort to understand the art, would have understand the move is merely one of many option, and it would only succeed if the defender broke the attacker ribs or at least inflict enough pain to disrupt their mind, everybody has a plan until they get punch in their ribs or got broken by their opponent. And iif the defender did succeed disrupting the attacker mind with pain, the move will end in just a second if not two, a couch potato wannabe silat practionner who only practice the movement in just 5 minutes who also haven't even mastered or even practicetrain the basic would do it in 5 second if not more, and maybe even ask the real attacker with intention to kill if it's working or is he doing it correctly. If the defender failed to inflict pain, they shouldn't have approach that option in the first place, there's other countless option for them to take or according to mornie, 3 option. If all failed, failed to deliver any damage/pain to their opponent, not because their training failed/incorrectly/insufficient, but because their opponent is too strong, just like mornie said, you should run at that point you realize he's is strong but the only reason martial artist would fight is because they have no option to run, escape or walk away because they have people to protect behind their back, who protect them if you run? And what if we there's no escape route? Which is why we train for the worst case scenario.

In modern day, yea, run as fast as you can. In history, you will be executed for running away from the war. The technique is designed for that scenario when you dropped your weapon and running is not an option

All present drills and techniques for every martial art including boxing etc are based on static drills. I suppose you could say that practicing running would be too. Language, music pretty much anything I can think of is taught like that.

Nice move, but it’s unlikely to work against a resisting opponent. Try it at full speed against a non-compliant training partner, preferably against one who isn’t familiar with Silat and who doesn’t know what you’re going to do to counter his attack. Keep it real.
@baldieman64

No technique is likely to work against a skilled attacker with an edged weapon when you are unarmed. All you can do is intelligently train principles and techniques that maximise your survival chances and drill the ones that are consistent with your usual training methodologies until they become second nature.Running away will always be my first option when confronted with a blade but if that's not an option or I've simply reacted to the attack and find myself at a reference point only to discover that a blade is in play, I'll take something that raises my survival chances from 5% to 15%.

@iconoclasticna, you don't know that's not going to work. I think in the video he showed a great offensive application: He stepped off centerline to avoid the cut, checked the hand (parried), followed up with an attack to the body, and trapped the blade around his neck. Good luck pulling your neck away from a sharp blade in that position. To try to move your neck out of that lock would result in you cutting Your own neck. Yes anything can happen in any type of Attack situation. Instead of trying to criticize that it's not going to work when you really don't know that to be true, Try to see the good in this application and realize that this is just a training drill and this does not mean you are going to do the exact same thing every time the opponent throws that attack.

And for a left handed opponent ? Those are some great moves but will not work for most people. To complex you need to be an expert. If your protagonist is statoinary, move in and strike the shoulder with your hand which is on the same side as the machette. As you move in headbutt him. Pivot left or right according to the hand and control the arm and the weapon with both arms. Even if he is still holding the weapon after the headbut which is unlikely you can throw him with basic judo throw. Just my two cents but i worked this out after seeing a machette confrontation last week. Thanx for the video but i feel this is for experts.

Even experts have problem doing unarmed vs any edge weapons. The technique is only there to increase the sucess rate from 0% to 5-6%, and only should be use when running is no longer an option, like ancient soldiers in a war
