Machinaal klompen maken | Kenniscentrum Immaterieel Erfgoed Nederland

Bij het machinaal maken van klompen wordt gewerkt met redelijk eenvoudige machines die met een beperkte snelheid draaien. De machines worden vanuit een centraal punt, de elektromotor, aangedreven met leren riemen. Het instellen van de machines vergt een hoge mate van vakmanschap en kennis van de eigenschappen van het hout. Eerst wordt het hout gezaagd of gekloofd. Nadat het buitenmodel van de klomp is gefreesd, wordt de klomp op maat uitgeboord. Er wordt gewerkt met mallen om een zo perfect mogelijke pasvorm te krijgen. De klomp moet worden gedroogd. Ten slotte wordt de klomp geschuurd en bewerkt.

Interesting, not understanding a single word of this presentation, I was struck by the connectiveness and purpose these craftspeople have with their shoes. Magically morphing shoes from bolts of wood essences the completeness of craft. And those kids completely validated the timeless dignity of ourselves as toolmakers, they were totallly involved.

As you are writing 'craftspeople', in this video they show the making of 1 pair, from tree to finished product. 25 Years ago, I worked at Nijhuis Klompen in Beltrum, the Netherlands, as a temporary job through an agency. My favorite 'station' was 14cm 'childrens size' and tourism products. I rather work fast as opposed to heavy and slow. 29cm was too heavy for my hands, it slowed me down more then I liked, so I requested 'kinderklompjes' = 14cm After working at that station for 2 days, I asked the foreman "How many do you make in a day at 14cm ?" Answer : "Hmm 300 pairs" CHALLENGE !!! There was this guy who replaced the spoon drills on the machines, every day, usually near the days end. I was giving it my all, to get near that 300 pairs and then all of a sudden, that jackass switched off my machines to replace the drills. FUCK..... "NOOOOOOOOO" I was at 298 and still had some 5 minutes...... I would have beaten it past 300 I was soo mad...... I cursed the guy for the next 298 years ... The manager learned of it and drew up a contract 'Sign here and welcome to the club'. That meant a salary raise of 40% and a steady job for a couple of years.
